If you receive an e-mail from
me or read a USENET post by me
and my signature block appears
something like it does in the
graphic below; And, you
want to see it as I intended
it be viewed; And, if --
for whatever reason -- you do
not want to change your mailer
settings to use a mono-spaced
font, then follow these simple
steps:

Bill--
...who heard the modem Jimi Hendrix used was a purple Hayes.
__ _-==-=_,-.
.. William A. Parrette 7177 Heritage Drive ........../--`' \_O-O.--< ---+

.. wap042@yahoo.com.... http://wap.parrette.net/ +--- /= | \_/|----+
_/=== \___/
|

Move your mouse pointer to the
upper left hand corner of the
signature. Next, press and hold
mouse-button-1. As you continue
to hold the mouse button down,
start dragging the mouse to the
lower right hand corner.

As you drag the mouse across
the signature, the text of
the signature will become
highlighted, or selected. Make
sure that all of the signature
characters are highlighted --
some of my signatures use one or
two extra lines above or below
the signature "box." If you
don't get all of the characters,
simply start over and try again.
Then use your Edit menu to copy
the highlighted text to your
clipboard (P.C.s and Macs both
operate in the same way here).

Once the text has been copied to
the clipboard, open up an editor
window. It doesn't matter
which one: NotePad, WordPad,
TextPad, or Word on a P.C.;
NotePad, SimpleText, TeachText,
WorldText on a Mac ... anything,
any editor at all will do as
long as it has the ability to
change fonts. Once the editor
window opens, use the editor's
edit menu and choose paste.

If the text does not remain
highlighted, repeat the
steps in the editor window to
highlight it again (or, choose
the select-all command usually
found in the edit menu as well).
Finally, use your font menu to
choose a "mono-spaced font."
Fonts such as Courier or
any font with the text
"terminal" or "typewriter"
in it will do. With these
fonts, every character is the
exact same width (as opposed to
"proportional" fonts which are
the default for most mailers).

You may notice, as in our example
here, that the "picture" still
doesn't look right. To understand
the problem, you have to remember
one of the primary features of HTML:
Unless the browser is in
PREformatted text or it sees
NonBreaking SPaces, it will squeeze
multiple blanks and tabs down to
a single blank/space character.
So, to get the "picture" of Tigger
to be displayed correctly, you have
to add some leading blank or space
characters to the beginning of the
first line under the "tag line" and
the last line. And, the ASCII-Art
is finally complete and viewable.
