Hi everyone, Late this year or early next year I am building a new house. I plan on decorating my office with GFR material that I have collected..You know, my own personal shrine to the band. What I REALLY want to find is 2 things. One is a poster of their early years and a poster from the reunion tours. Do any of you know where a person may find these two items? The first could be a repro since I doubt I could afford a original! I have pictures, items I bought at the shows and a old Phoenix album risbee with Mels autograph but I really would like to get some posters. Any help would be appreciated. I've always liked GFR's early music the best. Saw them live 3 times between 1970 and 1976. THose shows remain the most powerful I ever saw, and back then i saw a lot of bands, Mountain,Black Sabbath,King Crimson, Jethro Tull and so on. To the point, although i liked their later stuff,I never could get use to them being a four piece band.I realize adding Craig Frost took a lot of the organ, piano duties off Mark performing live. My question is What happened to Craig Frost? No mention of what is doing now on the BTM special. Would appreciate it if someone could tell me.Thanks GFR fan in Carolina ------------------------------ From: RICKDC@aol.com Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 12:34:34 EST Subject: Behind The Music-what son's were played???? Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 17:33:22 -0500 Subject: Live Album/guitar sound/hope to not bore ya..... Aaahh, the elusive tone question... A never-ending search that defines a true (notice I didn't say "good") guitarist.... A true guitarist is never satisfied with his tone (or "sound"), and is constantly in search of new, different, better, etc. tone. Back to GFR - Mark started out with the Messenger guitar, an aluminum-neck, thin hollowbody , arch-top with two single coil Dearmond-type pickups. As the West amps were extremely loud and probably didn't distort easy by themselves, Mark wanted to add a Hendrix-type sustain and distortion in his "tone quest". The 2nd generation Messengers had a built-in distortion circuit activated by a switch near the controls (this switch merely activated mono/stereo mode on 1st generation 1967 Messengers). Both Marks' clean and distorted tones(good ex - "Paranoid", Live Album) are hard to cop with any guitar/fuzz/amp combo other than what he had. The Messenger's aluminum neck and "larger" (not small, like a Strat) single-coil, low-output pickups produce unique treble "highs", and coupled with the hollow body (which helps to give a little more "beef") , produces the signature Farner tone through "Survival". Mark used the front, or neck, pickup 90% of the time, and both pickups about 10 % time, both with or without the fuzz switch. The Dearmond pickups were probably the same output value, and, due to the physics of string movement thru a magnetic field, the bridge (or back) pickup would not seem as loud, and would produce a thin sound as well. Whew, I'm in danger of boring myself....! Electrical Instrument Technology has come so far in the last 30 years, that there are tons of ways to cop Mark's (and others') tones, using inexpensive pedal-type eq's, replacement pickups, etc. I remember when there was only the Fender Blender and Maestro fuzztones out (back when you had to walk all the way across the room to change the TV channel). Now, literally thousands of different pedals. Mark had to move on when he changed guitar rigs over the years - he virtually played his guitars into the ground (the original Messenger is way-beat now). Hope I haven't put anyone to sleep. This kinda subject is more suited to a guitar geek (like myself) site that Roadkill , but it is GFR related and might answer a few questions.
