IT WAS AWESOME !!! I had a great time and the boys rocked the house. I had the pleasure to meet Tom Fagen, as both our significant others choose not to attend the big show. Tom is cool, and we had a good time hanging out together before, during and after the concert. OK, speaking of the concert... the following is a list of the songs that were played in the order they played them (I limited myself to one beer, so the list is quite accurate!!): Are You Ready Rock & Roll Soul Foot Stompin' Music Time Machine Paranoid Sins a Good Mans Brother Mr. Limosine Driver Heartbreaker Aimless Lady TNUC Inside Looking Out Shinin On The Locomotion We're An American Band (The band then went off stage, then came back with...) Mean Mistreater Some Kind of Wonderful Bad Time Closer To Home (The band left again, but came back 1 more time to do...) Gimme Shelter The boys sounded great !! Even when Mark broke a string during Are You Ready, they still sounded good! Mark Farner was a MAD MAN !! He could not stand still on that stage! Mel worked his magic on the bass, and Donnie... well what can I say. You have to see him and hear him in person to believe that it is only one guy pounding on those drums!! The highlight of the evening for me had to be after the show. I got to meet The BREWERS... yes that's right folks, Don and Sunny posed together for a picture for me and I got to shake hands with both of them and get my shirt and CD folder autographed by Mr. Don himself. Though it has been written in many of an E-Mail, I have to say that Sunny Quinn is one great lady. I was able to chat with her while Don worked his way to where I was. A very nice lady and I hope to talk to her again some day. Sunny, if you're reading this, THE INVITATION WILL REMAIN OPEN !! Donnie was also very down to earth, I had great time talking to him as well. I just missed Mark (I saw him sign one autograph, then he had to split) and Mel was nowhere to be seen. OK boys and girls, that's the skinny on this Monday night in San Diego. I waited 25 years for this night. All I can say is, it was worth the wait!! For all you folks that do not have the luxury of having GFR play in your home town, DO WHAT YOU CAN TO SEE THEM !! It is truley worth the price! Keep the FUNK cranked up !! My daughter told me 'Wayne from Australia called for you". About an hour later Wayne Shields called again. He has friends that live about 3 miles from me whom he met at the Barrier Reef in Australia during their honeymoon. Wayne and I chatted about Grand Funk for nearly an hour. After I hung-up the adrenaline really started pumping. I'm not usually a nervous person but when I woke up Friday AM, I was pretty nervous. I knew alot of people were planning on coming in for the show. Since it's my home town I wanted everything to be perfect. Greg Werely called Friday AM from Detroit, to wish us all good luck and pass along the info that the boys were on a tight schedule with the Phoenix show the next night. I told Greg I didn't think there was any way we were going to get backstage tonight, I figured they'd all hop on a plane for Phoenix right after the show. Shortly after Greg called I got a call from Tom Minero. He had flown in from California and was at his hotel. I asked Tom if he could to stop by the Monte-Carlo and grab us one of the big tables in the back. The Monte-Carlo wouldn't take reservations and I was worried we wouldn't get a big table to seat everyone. Donna Wightman called next and said her and hubby Allen were going straight to the Monte-Carlo. My wife Sharon and I headed out around 2:00 to pick-up Phil Catalano at the airport. Knowing Phil's luck with past flights I was relieved to see the 'On-Time' beside his flight number when I checked the monitor at the airport. Sure enough Phil was right on schedule and we headed for the Monte-Carlo. I decided to drive by the Hard Rock on the way to the Monte-Carlo. Thinking to myself we'll never find a parking place to actually park and go in. Low and behold a spot was open right by the door to the Hard Rock. The doors leading to the Joint inside the Hard Rock were all locked but we could peek between the doors to see the guys mulling around the stage. We saw Don and Mark up on stage, at least we knew they had made it in from Japan. So we headed for the Monte-Carlo. Phil mentioned he had to snag some fancy cigars for a buddy at a place right across from the Monte-Carlo. I'm secretly still worried about the 'big table' until we walk in and see Donna, Allen and Tom sitting in the back at a huge table with big smiles on their faces. I remember telling the waitress if they took good care of us I'd give her a tee shirt, needless to say we had great service all evening. Phil bolted to go grab the cigars and Gary Rector and his wife arrive, so there's about 6 of us there when Allen says 'look who's here'. I look up to see Sunny and her daughter Dale strolling over to us, I couldn't believe she actually made it. Sunny says see had the flight from hell, almost crashing while landing in Dallas, she looks happy to be alive. Donna asked her several questions, some of which I can't recall now. I do recall her saying that "On-time" is still in the works to be released on CD, the live CD is still a go. The video footage taken at Detroit had bad lighting and probably won't be released, they might just use some of the good portions for promo purposes. The guys are pretty tired from the Japan trip. Sunny's daughter Dale was really nice. She lives here in vegas and is 22 years old and for you younger guys on the list she is a 'fox', just like her mom. She tells us she has never seen her Dad perform with Grand Funk, she's seen him with Bob Seger, but never with Grand Funk, you can tell she's really excited to see the show. I think it was Donna who brought up 'Sweet, Sweet Connie'. I about choked on my beer when Dale says she asked her Dad one day who 'Sweet, Sweet, Connie' was and what her 'thing'. I guess Don skirted around that one like a master politician. Phil returned from his cigar run, and he and Sunny had a big bear hug. It seems that Phil has struck up quite a friendship, more so than I had imagined. Donna and Sunny also have a pretty close friendship dating back to the LA show. For the next 45 minutes we talked to Sunny & Dale you got the impression you were talking to an old friend and not the wife of a celebrity. Sunny is a big time DJ in Florida and is probably a pretty big celebrity in her own right. Dale kept eyeing the stack of 'Funkengruven" shirts I'd brought along and I offered her one, her big beautiful eyes lit up when I handed it to her. Sunny mentioned how she thought the tee shirts were great and was promptly handed one. They needed to get down to the sound check by 5 so they got ready to leave. Phil wanted to get a snap shot before they left. Sunny wanted to wait until she got cleaned up, she still had her traveling clothes on from the 'flight from hell', with just a little arm twisting she posed with her daughter Dale and also one with Phil (one of about 50 Phil got with his arm around her). By this time I was starting to relax, things had been going just perfect, little did I know the perfect evening was just beginning. Roadkill fans started pouring in from all over the place (Phil has a list I'm sure he'll post). I believe we had about 21 people there at the peak. Food and drinks flowed as the party swung into high gear, and Grand Funk fans did what we do best, talk Grand Funk Railroad and party! I hope it doesn't get too boring! This story will be told through my eyes. I'm sure you'll get a different angle from the other folks who attended. And I can't wait to read their recaps too and relive some of the memorys! 2:30 My chauffers, Mike and Sharon Butler, picked me up at the Las Vegas airport. We proceeded to head over to the Monte Carlo from there but made a little detour on the way and stopped by the Hard Rock hoping to catch a glimpse of the boys and/or the sound check. We were able to peek through a couple of doors and barely see them on stage. We heard a couple of chords strummed on the guitar and a couple of chops on the drums. It seemed like they were in the infant stages of the sound check. Not too terribly exciting but I think Mike, Sharon and I still got a little adrenalin going...Let the games begin! So we headed over to the Monte Carlo. 3:30 When we arrived at the Monte Carlo brewery Donna and Allen Wightman and Tom Minero were already there with a HUGE Grand Funk table reserved! Now my adrenalin really started pumping knowing what was ahead...A room full of roadkill Funkfanatics, a Grand Funk show, and hoping for another chance at a backstage thing. After exchanging a couple of hugs and handshakes I had to run across the street to pick up some cigars for my buddy. But first of course I put in my beer order for a Pale Ale. Well, on my way back from getting the cigars, you have to walk by the brewery's restaurant section to actually get in the place, so I peaked through to see if I could see the roadkill gang and I could barely see some silouhettes with all the sunlight beaming in. Well, I saw someone who looked like Sunny and I said to myself, nah, that's probably just Donna with blonde looking hair from the sunlight shining in. I had invited Sunny but thought there was no way she could make it, just like the NY and LA shows. But sure enough I walk in there and there she is with her daughter Dale talking with Donna!!! Boy, talk about getting a rush!! Of course I'm secretly hoping that Don came over there with them but I guess not. Anyway, I gave Sunny a big hug, or did she give me a big hug?, probably me giving her a big hug, and she introduced me to her daughter, who by the way is an absolute BABE! Anyway, I just tried to let Sunny and Donna continue their discussion and I tried to chime in when I caught drift of what the topic was. We talked about a bunch of things of which I'll only remember about 10%! I brought the Aug issue of Guitar World with me and whipped that thing out and Sunny and Dale didn't even know about it. Needless to say they were pretty excited! And the first picture in the article set Sunny off into a story about how great that rehearsal day was. She was talking about Paul Shafer walking in, totally nervous, never met these guys, didn't know the songs, and had NEVER conducted an orchestra before!! She said what transpired over the next 3 1/2 hours was truly amazing and I believe Donna quoted her as saying something like that was one of the best days of her life. Paul did an incredible job with the band and the orchestra. And for all of us who saw the shows we can attest to that. She said Paul was a great guy and that him and Don hit it off really well. Imagine that! Don is just a super human being, I can't see how anyone couldn't hit it off with him! I've always anticipated this moment when I would get the chance to talk with Sunny and/or the boys and always wondered what I'd say. I mean, what do you say without looking like a total fool? Well, Donna had that all under control! She was just peppering her with questions, it was great! And no, Donna did not look like a fool. Quite the contrary. I think Sunny really likes Donna and she was willing to answer just about any question she asked. Truly a great lady. Especially with all of us roadkill vultures hanging around. At this time there was probably about 10 of us. I got to talk to Sunny and Dale a little bit about their old stomping grounds on Long Island because that's where I grew up and they had lived there for a while too. They were from the Glen Cove area for those of you NYers out there. We mentioned Mick and Bobby's cover band to her and the tape and all that. She was really excited about that too and she says do you have a copy? And duh, dopy me was suppose to bring a copy with me and I forgot it. Big surprise, I know! Anyway, she wants to get a copy of the tape so we've got that in the works too! This stuff is just all too cool!!! Maybe after they get the tape Don can give Mick a couple of tips on the drumming and the screaming and Mark can give some tips to Bobby on the guitar/singing/keyboard/ harp playing. I think the first thing Mark would say about the keyboard is to get rid of it and get a real one. The one that's provided in the studio is like a Mattel toy! Anyway, I digress. Back to the Sunny show. It was funny, Sunny kept saying that they really had to go but stayed anyway and kept on chatting with us. I think she really didn't want to leave. I truly believe she was having a great time talking to all of us fanatics. But she hadn't seen Don in like 10 days or so and really wanted to go over to the Hard Rock and see him. Sunny said that she didn't get to go to Japan because the airlines screwed them around at the last minute and then the airfare would've been $4,000! So she and Don's daughter decided not to go...needless to say they were bummed! One of the things we were talking about, I believe Donna brought it up in her interview, was sweet, sweet Connie. Both Sunny and Dale said that Don absolutely hates that woman! Dale said she asked "Dad" about her one time and he got really pissed off. She said she had never seen him like that before. So now we know what NOT to ask Don about. And Dale was also saying that she'd never seen her Dad play with Grand Funk before, she'd seen him with Bob Seger but that's it. She was so psyched to see this show! And I can tell you that she was in for a real treat because Don didn't do diddly with Seger, he just kept a beat. Nothing like what he does with Grand Funk. So I bet she was blown away! Well, finally Sunny and Dale really did have to get going. It was almost 4:30 and they were suppose to meet Don around 5:00 I think. I asked Sunny if she'd mind taking a couple of pictures. And she said no pictures right now, wait til tonight. I guess her and Dale just got off of the New York, New York roller coaster (a kick-ass coaster by the way) and her hair was all messed and all of that. Well, let me tell you both of them still looked beautiful! I tried to convey this too her and I guess she gave in. I was able to take a picture of her and Dale and then have someone take a picture of me and Sunny. Somebody mentioned something about these pictures showing up on the Web and she said she'd kill us if they did. Actually, she looked right at me and said if these pictures show up on the web my lawyer will be contacting yours. Donna and I assured her that we'd never post anything of her without her permission, which later on we did get. I also asked her if there was anything going on after the show and she said nothing that she knew about but she'd see what she could do. She said put it this way, after the show, don't go anywhere! Let the rest of the crowd leave and you guys hang around and we'll take it from there. Well, let me tell you, we weren't gonna forget that! So, Sunny and Dale headed off to the Hard Rock. I think the rest of us just stood there in shock as they walked away. I know I did. I still couldn't believe that she actually showed up. What a great lady she is! 4:30 Well, the roadkill party was well under way by this time. Especially with the adrenalin rush we got from talking with Sunny and Dale! More and more roadkill members were starting to flow in and more and more beer was starting to flow. As the roadkillers showed up I tried to introduce myself to them and get them to sign the signup sheet. Otherwise there's no way to keep track! I'm sure I missed a few...my apologies. I also tried to get a picture (other than the group shot) of everybody too. And again, I'm sure I missed a few, again sorry! It was really great to meet and talk Funk with everyone. I believe we had 21 people at the peak! Great turnout! I really enjoyed talking with the Cappetto brothers. They were just a wealth of information on Rock and Roll in general, not just Grand Funk. But not to worry, of course we talked Funk about 99% of the time. So for the next couple of hours, up until around 7:00, we all ate, drank, and mingled with each other talking the Funk. I hope everyone had as good a time as I did! Once again, Grand Funk fans are the best! Here is the list of folks I had on the signup sheet: Phil Catalano Mike/Sharon Butler Donna/Allen Wightman Tom Fagan Rick Cappetto Alex Cappetto Tom Minero Gary Rector John/Val Cavenaugh (and son) Jim/Jeanne Maijala Wally Bitaut Wayne Shields Donna/Peter Karras Jay Adams Robert/Denise Bodily Sunny Quinn Dale Quinn Well, I just remembered that there's some limit on the size of these things so I'm gonna close on Part I for now. Stay tuned for Part II. I hope I didn't bore you guys too terribly bad. I'm just trying to tell it as I remember it. And the more the days go by, the more I'll forget. The next one I'll babble about the show and the aftershow stuff. It advertises different videos of GFR from 1969 to 1997, including the 2 hour concert in 1997 at New York City's Beacon Theatre. What has me interested (if all this is true), is that it also advertises the 1972 IN CONCERT appearance of GFR on ABC tv. Also seeing the guys three times this year (after all those years of NEVER seeing them), I probably won't be seeing any more for quite some time. So I hope you guys who attend the shows this summer and the ones to come this Fall will return the favor. The concert itself was pretty close to the other shows I've seen this year, sans the orchestra. The guys were REALLY loud, matching the volume at the Detroit show. They were very energetic and tight, no new songs but they did play Gimme Shelter one of my all time favorites to close the show. We were in the 10th row on the left which blocked Howard Eddy from view, but all in all good seats. Sunny came by after the show and herded us up stairs to the after show party. My group was the second one to go up the elevator. We walked into an pretty empty lounge area and everyone was walking down a hallway left of the lounge. In the hallway were the first wave of 'roadkillers'. Don was standing in the dressing room doorway drinking a brew and shaking hands, down the hall a little further was Mark leaning up against the wall talking with several of the roadkill gang. I got close enough to Mark to deliver a message I had from Brent Woody. Brent toured with Mark on one of his God Rock tours and wrote two of the songs of Mark's 'Some Kind of WOnderful' Christian CD. Brent and I had exchanged some emails, the last of which he announced he had graduated from law school. Brent asked if I saw Mark to tell him he said hi. I told Mark about Brent and Mark says that they were going to be recording one of Brent's songs on the next Grand Funk release.(Brent was happy to hear that) Just about then Mel came walking down the hall to join the festivities. Shortly after we were asked to back out to the lounge area for more elbow room and the band would be out to meet us. We all obliged and moved out. The striking thing about this VIP party was there weren't that many people there, probably less than 50. In LA I bet there were 150 people. Don and Mel (Mark never made it back out) made their way through the crowd signing autographs and posing for pictures. For some reason I felt content to just sit back and watch the roadkill guys jockey for autographs and talk to the guys, which made my wife happy. In LA I guess I kinda deserted her in my quest to get autographs and pictures of the guys (sorry Babe). Eventually everyone had an autograph and the Don & Mel were just hanging around shooting the bull with people. I walked over to Howard Eddy, the keyboard player and told him he was doing a great job. He told me he had worked with Mark during his solo career. I saw Mel free and walked over to shake his hand. We talked for about 5 minutes one-on-one, I can't recall half of the things we talked about. I know I asked him about how old he was hwen they hit it big, I believe he told me he was only 17 . He said he starting performing at bars and weddings at age 12! Mel said his son is a better bass player than he is. This party was vastly different than the LA party. It seemed so intimate and the guys didn't seem to be in such a rush. I'm not sure what happened to Mark, maybe he needs to rest his back after a show where he jumps around so much. Since this is probably the last live GFR show I'll see for a long time. I would just like to say this whole roadkill thing has been amazing. I think back to all the great people I met thorugh the list at Detroit, LA & Vegas shows it's really hard to believe. I've made friendships that I hope will last a lifetime, people I would have never met if it wasn't for the internet and the 'Roadkill' mailing list - thanks Bill Parette - and also thanks to Jeff Cochran and Donna Wightman for putting out the Grand Funk welcome mat in cyberspace so we all had a place to meet in the first place. Chris rates the quality at only a "C" rating. I think I'm going to order the audio recording of the 1972 Madison Square Garden show. It's rated "A-", that should be a very good tape to rock-out to. Have'nt seen them in at least 25 years, was so close to stage, I could have touched them, the show was held at the Celebrity Theatre in the Round, believe me I'm still feeling dizzy, they did all my favorites, I believe the songlist was closer to the "LIVE ALBUM" rather than 'CAUGHT IN THE ACT', the only thing I found to be different was that the 3 times I was lucky enough to see them way back when, was Mel would always position himself towards the back of stage, kinda like a Bill Wynam, of the Stones, this concert he was funk-dancing all over the stage! I've been a Funk fan for years,so I'm not new to the band/music,but I AM new to the Net. Still not waded thru all the sites there seems to be (though looking forward to it immensely) but came across this mailing list, and had to subscribe a.s.a.p. Great to see so many folk behind the group and the reunion - just wish I could find a soul-mate in THIS country! Anyway - I have some questions which I hope someone may be kind enough to answer for me. If some of them are really obvious, then don't shout me down - remember England is way behind the US in access to Funk figures and facts! Here goes:- 1. I know BTD,GSSP,GFL and WF? have yet to see the light of day on CD,but about 6 months ago "All the girls...." was mentioned on import lists. DID it ever actually come out? 2. My brother has seen an advert mentioning forthcoming Jap.CD re-issues with bonus tracks? Is this true? Will there be new songs,or just diff. versions/mixes? 3. I have an early record by Don/Mark called "Monumental Funk". Anyone know if this is available on CD? 4. I have a 7" with "Destitute and losing" on the B-side. Is this the only non-album track officially released? 5. I have sheet music to Am.Band,Phoenix and Shinin' On. Anyone know if any others are available? 6. Were "Mark Farner" and "No Frills" (the 2 non-christian ones) ever put out on CD? 7. Did Flint ever release more than one album? 8. I've seen "Get Funked" mentioned on a bootleg CD list. Is it worth getting? Is it the same as "Live in Hawaii" that I once saw on a vinyl list? The track listings/sound ratings put me off each time,I'm ashamed to admit now! 9. I've always wondered if T.N.U.C. has a special meaning....or is my worst fear founded, and should I just forget this question RIGHT NOW!?!?! 10.Why is Craig not in the reunion? Was he not invited? Well that's enough for now. Hoping someone will be able to enlighten me on any of these points. Regards to you all. Well, since you successfully subscribed to the mailing list, I can assume that you've been to my site. I have links to several others including Donna Wightman's. Donna has some other ways to interact with other fans including a new "chat room" (which I may have to break down and try out here soon) if you have a Java-en- abled browser. > ... but came across > this mailing list, and had to subscribe a.s.a.p. As I understand it, it did. Several list members report hav- ing obtained a copy. Personally, I try to avoid the imports but Capitol is making me rethink this strategy. Other list members who have ATGITWB may want to respond here. > ... > 2. My brother has seen an advert mentioning forthcoming Jap.CD re-issues > with bonus tracks? Is this true? As far as I am aware, every Grand Funk album had a song book published for it. I personally have to very beat up copies and other list members report having others. The ones I know about are On Time, Grand Funk, Mark, Don & Mel, We're An American Band, and Shinin' On. I'm as sure as I can be that all of the others have been available in the past. Although I'll be darned if I can find a source for them -- and I *have* looked. On the same train of thought, I am also absolutely sure that any "hit" single has had sheet music published for it. I have a copy of Mean Mistreater somewhere. > ... > 6. Were "Mark Farner" and "No Frills" (the 2 non-christian ones) ever put > out on CD? ... But, it prob- ably *is* your worst fear founded!! Spell it backwards and re- member that Mark was a very young man -- some would say a boy -- when he wrote it and probably had just as many "girl problems" as any teen-aged boy. Please don't hold it against him -- it is still a great song. > ... > 10.Why is Craig not in the reunion? Was he not invited? ... There is some small controversy about whether he was invited or not and how he fit in Grand Funk originally. But the short and simple answer is that is is still playing with Bob Seger and quite happy. > ... > Well that's enough for now ... Again, Dave, welcome to the list.
