I noticed in the begining of T.N.U.C. Don starts off the beat, then Mark and Mel are supposed to jump right in but they don't. There is a time where it sounds as if they missed their que. Mel turns to Don and smiles at him with a look on his face as if he were about to say "what the hell was that"? Was there anyone who saw the video under the impression that Don was supposed to change into a different beat as their que to come in? Another question... After Don's drum solo in T.N.U.C., (same video) why does he get up and run a complete circle around his drum set? Then right after that, Mark says "Donnie Brewer.... Mr. Ass kisser himself." Am I missing something here? Just curious, Paul Bass6plyr@aol.com ------------------------------ From: Bass6plyr@aol.com Date: Sun, 29 Jun 1997 00:50:50 -0400 (EDT) Subject: I Come Tumblin' Here's another question my fellow roadkillers. In the first verse of "I Come Tumblin", Mel stops playing for a second. Example: "I come tumblin' down, from the darkness I, stretch my arms out to, catch the sound, yeah." He stops right there for a second, then jumps back in again to finish..... "I hear grumblin' and, broken heartness is, slowly spreading and, going 'round." Now right after that verse, he does stop because Mark does that lead section and Mel just fills in a few notes here and there. My question is, did anyone think that Mel thought it was the end of the verse, but then quickly realized it and jumped back in? If you notice, he doesn't stop playing in that section anywhere else in the song. He just keeps it moving until the entire verse is complete and Mark goes into that lead change again. But you know what? Even if that was a mistake, I wish he would've done it like that throughout the whole song. I think it sounds great! Later, Paul Bass6plyr@aol.com P.S. From both sides of the coin -- as an ex-musician and having seen "our boys" in concert a fair number of times -- it is not at all uncommon for the drummer to start a song out by himself. I have seen GFR enough times to recognize this form of introduction to T.N.U.C. -- it is a common one. I went back and watched it after reading this message and can see exactly what Paul is talking about. IMHO, Don is right on track -- I've seen him and heard him do this intro before. How- ever, it *does* look and sound like Mel missed his cue! The au- dio on my tape is not the best but it sort of sounded like Mel came in a little late. > ... under the impression that Don was supposed to change into a > different beat as their que to come in? ... Nope. Not at all. Don was right on. Now please, don't get me wrong here. I think Mel is the abso- lute best bass player in the world. I love his technique, the chords and effects he uses on occasion. And, I would love to play drums along side of him some day. But it wouldn't be the first time Mel made a mistake. :-) There is the documented mistake on the intro to I Want Freedom where Don stops the recording of the song because Mel misunder- stood where a particular bass note should stop or ring out. And, of course, there is the little boo-boo on Mark Says Alright on the live album. > ... > ... After Don's drum solo in T.N.U.C., (same video) why does > he get up and run a complete circle around his drum set? ... Well, how 'bout: Always the showman? This is one of the rea- sons that I enjoyed GFR so much. They never "just stood there and played." If Mark can go dancing across the stage, can kneel down and bend backwards while playing the guitar, why can't Don- nie do a little victory dance after such a great solo? Just a guess. My $0.02. :-) > ... Then right after > that, Mark says "Donnie Brewer.... Mr. Ass kisser himself." > ... As has been pointed out elsewhere, he says Mr. Ass-kicker. Hey folks! Well, I think the only ones that can really answer this ques- tion are Mark Don, and Mel -- and they aren't on-list yet. So, until that day comes we can only guess. My CD is on loan, my tape is out in the car, and my record player is down in the basement. But, I think I know what you're talking about here, Paul, and it may just be that we found anoth- er boo-boo. Just a guess though. As a drummer, I can *feel* how much effort Don puts into that song. And, if it was a mistake on Mel's part, it was such a small mistake that they didn't think it worth the effort to go back and rerecord it. Especially since there was no clean break between it and the previous song -- they would have had to redo two of them. Again, just my $0.02. ;-) Funk fans are the best!!! Let's keep it up!!! Many folks on-list have expressed the same sentiment that you have about the early material. Personally, I'm on the fence -- I like a lot of the early stuff but I have a lot of post-Knight favorites too. Feel free to participate in any of the threads of conversation here. Or, start a new thread if you like. Now that "our boys" are back in the U.S. and touring, there's bound to be a lot of activity on the list. > ... Excellent album (regardless of what the reviewers in the past have said) and a great song (especially the "Weekend Rebellion" video of the tune). I still drum along with it on occasion when I sit down behind the old, dusty set. :-) > ... I was wondering if this album is out or > will be out on CD? Well, Capitol has not "officially" released this one although there was an EMI release that was generally available. And, list members -- correct me if I'm wrong, there was a Japanese release of this one that was actually a double CD. As a recent list discussion has indicated, Capitol has re- called all of the officially released CD material from their re- tail stores and distributors. I believe the general feeling is that this is in preparation for a rerelease of a completely re- mastered version of the entire GFR Capitol catalog. Keep your eyes and ears open on the list. They found some old beach footage which has nothing to do with GFR, and put some beach bands in here and there. They use some pictures of the guys with the song Paranoid playing in the background with some 60's special effects to start the movie off. Then after a bunch of crappy movie footage about college kids going to the beach for fun under the sun. And after watching some bad lip singing beach bands, then some bed room scene, all of a sudden out of nowhere there is GFR on a stage lip singing to Into the Sun. Then after that it goes back to some more crappy footage and ends. Oh yeah this was really worth the money. NOT! That is my review of this Plan 9 from outer space, Rip off video. Anything to make a buck I guess. :-( PS And no offense to anyone who liked this piece of garbage. I mean video. The only part that is any good is seeing the band lip singing too Into the Sun. One lousy song thats all. And they are billed as the stars of this movie. This movie probably never had GFR in it. Its probably just some old beach stock footage that was laying around, and someone thought hey lets put GFR's name on it and open it up with some picture stills and special effects with one of their songs in the background and then show the band playing one song somewhere in the movie and we can call it Get Down Grand Funk. And, once again, roadkill gets the story FIRST! Thanks to Phil Catalano's suave and charming personality : ), Sunny Quinn met with us at the pre-show party which took place in the Microbrewery at the Monte Carlo casino (when you see all the pictures of Phil and Sunny together once I get them posted, you will see how much she adores him--hey Phil, Allen said we better not let Don see all these pics!) Sunny brought her lovely daughter Dale with her, and we enjoyed their company for at least 45 minutes. Dale said that she had never seen her dad play with Grand Funk before, and she was looking forward to the show. Mike and Sharon Butler gave Sunny a roadkill t-shirt (which Dale's boyfriend Dennis ended up wearing to the show! We teased him later that we had recruited him to roadkill, but Sunny told him that she wanted the shirt back after he washed it!) During our conversation with Sunny at the pre-show meeting, Phil pulled out the article from the recent Guitar World (?) issue, and she excitedly said that she had not seen it yet. She studied the picture on the first page of the article, which showed the band rehearsing with Paul Shafer and the Bosnian orchestra before the Detroit show, and she gave us a recount of that day. She explained how Paul was "sweating bullets" when he got there because he had never played with all these musicains before, and had never led an orchestra. Sunny said that after 3 1/2 hours, Paul had incredibly organized the whole show. She said that it was the most amazing transformation she had ever seen, and that it was "one of the greatest days" of her life. Phil has the list of names of everyone who was there, and it was a great party, which by itself, would have been worth the 6 1/2 hour drive. I know it's been said before, but I don't mind saying it again, Grand Funk fans are the best people in the world! Everytime we meet new faces, it's just like we are old friends seeing each other after many years. And Sunny really made all of us feel like we were her friends. There just isn't words to explain how wonderful she has been to us (now we all know why Don can sing 'Some kindof Wonderful' with such enthusiasm.) It's getting late, and I am bushed after the drive home today, but I will continue the story tomorrow, and hopefully remember any more important details to add to this part of the story. Hang in there guys... Donna ------------------------------ From: Dale Chavez Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 07:51:45 -0600 Subject: 'Vegas Review Well, the wait was definitely worth it!! Having been a Grand Funk fan since the late '60s and never seen them, I was totally blown away by the show in Vegas. My wife and I had great seats and walked away in total awe of these guys. My apologies to the Roadkill folks; we never got to the Monte Carlo 'cause we lost track of time roaming the new casinos. Sounds like a great time was had there also. Back to the show... I was amazed at how much fun the guys seem to be having, especially Mark Farner, who is so animated! During "Heartbreaker", I closed my eyes and tried to picture myself at the 'Garden in '69. Too cool! The only criticism I have is that the sound was inconsistent. There was songs that were mixed very well and others that were extremely distorted. Not sure why that was. There is one more thing, it sounds like Don was triggering his drums. While I can understand this if Don is triggering because it requires less effort (relatively speaking) to produce the same volume, it definitey sounds cheesey at times. A good sound man and drum tech can produce incredible sounds from acoustic drums if miced and mixed correctly. The Joint is a small club setting of maybe 2000 capacity but my friends who go there often say it is acoustically perfect, not a bad seat in the house(It was my first time there too).We were in the Gold Circle,6 rows from the left speaker tower. My ears were still ringing the next morning,LOL.Grand Funk played about 1½ hours doing Gimme Shelter as their encore. They did a good mixture of their earlier music and their later more commercial hits like Shine On,American Band etc.I liked them best when they were young and angry but the entire night was very enjoyable. To my complete delight they did a great version of Inside Looking Out that had the entire house rockin'. This E-Mail was prompted by a couple guys in the 2nd row who were wearing Grand Funkengruven T-Shirts that had list of Grand Fund web sites.Even though I surf quite a bit I never thought about looking for Grand Funk on the web even though I know Rutgers University has a home page for Jethro Tull.I guess rock'n'roll is everywhere.I found your site doing a Infoseek searh, you were on the 2nd page of 10 hits. Anyway, just wanted to let you know the band is still out there rockin'.Have a Grand Funkin' Day! Joe F. Dear DOdell, Yes, I recorded both of these shows off of a satellite dish and they were actually broadcasting commercials when they were supposed to so there was no additional footage in between sets. Later. Regards, Jim ------------------------------ From: Donna Wightman Date: Mon, 30 Jun 1997 22:46:17 -0700 Subject: Las Vegas continued.... Hey gang, I spent all evening updating my web site with some great reviews I received from the Osaka, Japan & Vegas shows. But, since I promised to add more to my review, I will briefly go over it, and then revise it in more detail to put up in my site: While we were talking with Sunny at the pre-show meeting, she asked if we had got back stage passes. I told her no, that we didn't want to ask again, as she had already done so much for us at the L.A. show. She said, "Well, after the show is over, don't leave. I'll see what I can do." After we left the Monte Carlo, we headed over to the Hard Rock Hotel, which is absolutely cool with all kinds of rock & roll paraphernalia. As we are standing in line to get into "The Joint" (which is where the shows are held) here comes Don & Sunny walking through the casino hand in hand. No one recognized them but us! Don kept moving, but Sunny came over and talked a minute. We got inside and started checking out the equipment, etc. Phil noticed that the drum kit was a "Drummer's Workshop" kit. We found out later that the guys equipment was already being set up in Phoenix for the next evenings show, and that Don was "borrowing" the kit for this show. The show began, and the first thing I noticed was that the band's energy was higher than what I remembered it being in L.A. (this also could be that I was much closer this time -- in the 10th row.) Everyone stood up and started rocking and singing "Are you Ready". The feeling in the air was incredible! You could tell immediately that this was going to be a good one! After the first song, Mark made the comment about how they just got back from spending 10 days in Japan, and that their peripheral was getting a little...(he then raises his arms out to his sides and shakes his hands, implying that they were suffering from jet-lag.) He then went on to say that it and the audience had them "all pumped up" and Mel then did a body builder stance and everyone laughed. You could definitely tell that they were running on adrenaline! Phil kept notes on the set, which was the same as the Japanese shows I believe. Song after song was great! We stood up the whole show and were screaming our heads off, and singing all the songs! Most of the crowd sang the words to "Inside Lookin Out", but not as loud as was done in L.A. I did notice quite a few fans that you could tell were die-hards, because they were also singing all the words to the songs. The 2 big screens on either side of the stage were great. Even when Mark was blocked by the people in front of me, I was able to watch those fingers on the big screen! Now, who was it that said Mark was a "simplistic" guitar player? I've been playing guitar since I was 14 years old, and I couldn't even figure out half of what he was playing even though I was watching his hands! That guy is incredible! And Mel was all over the place, his fingers flying up and down the neck! Don was right on the beat, you could tell he was into it, as they all were. They only one we couldn't see from our vantage point was Howard Eddy, but we did get to see him on the big screen. During Don's drum solo on T.N.U.C., you realized why he was so upset over Capital cutting this out of the "Caught in the Act" CD. This song is his "shining star." I wish you all could have seen the mischievous look on his face. We got a great view of it on the big screen, and Phil (who was sitting on my right) and I both looked at each other and started cracking up. My husband Allen was screaming so loud that I thought for sure he wouldn't have a voice left later! I'll try to remember more details later when I get this review up on my site. In brief, all I can say is that was by *far* the most exciting and energetic show I had ever seen! I would tell people, even if they are not a GFR fan, but just a fan of rock & roll, that they absolutely have to see this show! This is not just some "reunion" show guys, this is kick-a** rock & roll at it's very best. Afterward, we hung around like Sunny had suggested, and after awhile she came over to us and said she was working it out to get us backstage. She asked us to take a head count "Roadkill only" she said. After a few minutes, Sunny and the security led us all over to the elevator, where we went upstairs to the "backstage" room. We walked in and Sunny introduced us to "Kootch", who is their road manager, and he led us down a hallway. Well, Allen and I were in the lead, and we stopped in the middle of the hallway, as Mark was standing right there! We started talking to him, and he was very alert and very talkative. Allen and Mark started talking, and they were laughing and joking with each other like they were old friends! I told him that all the fans were saying that his playing was better than ever, and he said "Alright, all that practice is paying off." I also then asked him about the new songs, and that is when he told me about the 2 songs they already had recorded, and that they had 3 more picked out. I couldn't think of anything else to say, and so I stood there just looking at him, trying not to stare. I just couldn't believe that we were right there talking to him! I did notice that he had lost some weight since L.A. and he was looking more fit. We then moved out of the way to let the others who had not got their picture taken with him yet, in. We (Allen & I) moved back down the hall and then talked with Mel (more detail later.) Then they moved us back into the main room, and we sat in there with Sunny, her daughter Dale, Dale's boyfriend Dennis, and some of their friends. We talked for over an hour, and just had a great time. Mark didn't come into the main room, but Don and Mel were there. Sunny pointed out Ron Nevison (the producer) to me, and he and Don were appartantly setting up studio times. There is more I want to share about Sunny, but it is too late tonight. Her daughter is every bit as beautiful and sweet as she is, and I tell you, it's so funny to hear Dale call Don Brewer "dad". Mel and Mark were leaving at midnight to take the bus to Phoenix. Sunny and Don stayed at the Hotel, but were getting up early to head to Phoenix for the next evenings show. We all watched a private and emotional goodbye between Dale and her parents. Dale lives in Las Vegas, and she told me that she doesn't get to see them often. You could tell how close they really are! The security led Don and Sunny to the elevator, and we all waved goodbye. Then, the elevator came back for us, and we headed back to Mike & Sharon's house. It was another incredible dream-like weekend, and I'm still feeling high from it (I was barely coming down from the L.A. show!) The cherry on top of the whole weekend was when Allen won a $250 jackpot on a nickel machine! We went home with more cash that we had come with. Now, maybe it was just coincidence, luck or fate, I don't know, but if I do have a lucky star, it has surely been "shinin on" me the last few months! LOL, Donna ------------------------------ End of grand-funk-digest V1 #79 *******************************
