Larry Larry, I saw someone playing rhythm off stage at the York, Pa. Grand Funk concert last summer and another list member thought that it was Ricky Farner. The first time I saw his name on an album was on Mark's first solo effort(1977). He looks quite a bit younger than Mark. Later. The DJ is one of the guys I donated a 'Grand Funkengruven' tee shirt to. He played our conversation over the air before launching into my request, Live 'Footstompin Music' - the first time I've ever heard them play anything from 'Caught In The Act'. After the song he said 'Now you now why the show at the Hard Rock is SOLD OUT!' I talked to him off air. He told me "Westwood Studios" records (audio) most of the shows at the Hard Rock, since Vegas isn't too far from LA. The VH1 'Hard Rock Live' shows are not taped at the Vegas Hard Rock, I'm not sure which one they tape at. He also mentioned he has a contact at 'King Biscuit' and they're about to release 4,000 shows they've taped through the years on CD. I don't know if Grand Funk ever did a King Biscuit show or not. Needless to say I'm not getting much work done today. It really just started to hit me today that the show is about 24 hours away. I wish all you 'Funksters' could be here with us. We'll definitely tip a few for you guys! I set up email accounts for Phil and Donna so if they want to, they can post a concert review when (if) we get up Saturday, hell we might just pull an 'all-nighter'. Here it is straight from the CAT's mouths: What: Grand Funk Party/Event hosted by Phil and Mick Catalano When: Summer of 1998, exact date not set yet Where: Mick's Ponderosa, Huntington, Long Island, New York Who: Everyone who is a member of the roadkill chatlist; their families and--or significant others; guest musicians not on roadkill; special invites by permission to persons that do not fit into the aforementioned categories; are invited. If you belong to roadkill, you are invited. Why: We all (Grand Funk Fans) need a party where we can meet each other; play and listen to our favorite music; give praise and thanks to Bill Parrette, Donna Wightman and Jeff Cochran for making this all possible; and have a Grand Funkin' Good Time!!! How: With some cooperation and hard work from a few volunteers we can pull this thing off. There are enough good people out there that want this event to happen. We're giving everyone long-term notice so that they can make plans to attend (and perhaps vacation in the area) Please understand that each and every individual will NOT receive a personal invitation. This is why we are posting it to roadkill. I don't want to beat this to death, but it seems that there is a lack of communication about this whole thing. Let's get off to a good start. No hard feelings, no offense to anyone, we love-ya all (even you Southern folk). So start thinking and planning for 98RKFF, we want to see you all there! There you have it, You Are All Invited! Mick was kind enough to send me a copy, and asked that I post my opinions to RK, so here's my shot at being a music critic. Stanley Meises, move over (into the oncoming train...sorry, I still have a little rage left over from that one). First off, the cassette tape Mick send me was recorded off a PA system, and I played it back on my 'wonderful' Wal-Mart special Walkman. Even with the poor recording quality and the problems with my setup (and my 42 year old ears exposed to all those years of drag racing...), these guys caught in the act will be in excellent form by the time 98RKFF comes around! It put a smile on my face. On the tape, they played Heartbreaker, ILO, Into the Sun, CTH, and a few others. I loved their ad-libbed Heartbreaker, even though Mick said differently (Mick, you shouldn't be so hard on yourself, you sounded great!). Had me singing in the car with them. Their 'Mark Farner', Bobby (sorry, Bobby, your last name escapes me), is a very, very talented individual: his vocals in FootStompin sounds exactly like Farner. No lies. He must sound great live. The 3 are in a "not knowing the songs and doing the best you can until you really learn them" stage. Even at this point, they have captured 'that garage' sound. And I loved it. Even that horrid sounding organ. By the way, Bobby does some fantastic feedback work on Heartbreaker. I don't know what kind of guitar/amp he used, but it sounded to me like the exact setup Farner himself used. I really envy you guys, Mick, Bobby, and Smitty. It must be a blast playing the songs we all love. If > you think I'm wrong, let the LITTLE BROTHERS of roadkill chime in. Joe Dear Joe, I have seen Mark solo with Ricky helping out on vocals and also acting as a roadie. During one of these concerts, my date said, " Well, it's pretty easy to tell who the big brother is in that family." I don't think that Ricky and Mark even look alike, but it was obvious that Ricky was quite proud of Mark's accomplishments and musical ability. Ricky also looks much younger than Mark. I know that Mark's father was killed in an auto accident when he was 9 years old. It appeared to me that Mark was Ricky's big brother/Dad/protector. Just my thoughts. Later. I got Closer, Shinin, and All the Girls today. After buying four flat and life-less Capitol copies of Closer, the Japanese have finally put the BASS back into this great album. Yes, Mel's booming, and I mean booming bass can be heard loud and proud on this copy. There seems so be a bit more hiss on Closer and Shinin, but the trade off for more bass is worth it. The bonus tracks on Closer are also interesting, but not vital. As for Shinin, the mix and quality seem to be about the same as the stateside release. The addition of Destitute makes it a worth while purchase. A very clean sounding version of this one I might add. And finally All the Girls. I know that this album sits at the bottom of most lists, but I does sound better than I remembered. The CD copy is also quite good. No bonus tracks though. NOW LETS GET ON WITH BORN TO DIE AND GOOD SINGIN!!!!!! ------------------------------ From: Donna Wightman Date: Sat, 28 Jun 1997 12:56:56 -0700 Subject: VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!! Okay, you guys are not going to believe it: Just when we thought things couldn't possibly get any better than they were in L.A...... It's Saturday morning, I'm sitting here in Mike & Sharon Butler's bedroom in Las Vegas, it's over a hundred degrees outside, and I'm still numb with shock about last night. First, I want to say that the show was fantastic. The energy level was high, even Mel was all over the place! We found out a ton of information for you guys, but I will have to post it later when I have more time. I will tell you this much for now, Mark said that they already had "2 tracks laid down" and are going back in the studio "very soon" to lay down 3 more. In fact, last night, Ron Nevison was at the aftershow party also, and was talking with Don about when they were going back into the studio (Mr. Nevison recently produced the Detroit show CD which will be coming out within the next few months.) We didn't find out the dates yet (when they were going into the studio), but Sunny Quinn said that she will let us know as soon as she finds out. Once again, Sunny was great, got us backstage, and was very kind and friendly to the roadkill gang. Stay tuned for my new book which I will publish for you all next week....
