Post from the depths of the CAT Cave: Hey everybody! My editor just sent me 30 of your posts. I appologize for my delay in responding to any of your inquiries or comments. If Mr. Ed(itor) decides not to email me today then I don't get to post `til tomorrow or something like that. I won't appologize for the long post because, well, you all know why. I'm making all kinds of tapes as we speak (type), got that duper workin' OT. Did studio session no. three with Bobby last night. And as an added bonus he brought down a bass player from one his old bands. This guy Peter funked out with us doing Are You Ready, Inside, Closer, Heartbreaker and a little Nothing is the Same. So now we have two temp GFR bass players. I'm hoping we can latch onto one of these guys on a more permanent basis. Both Bobby and I are happy with our progress so far. Fun, fun, fun!!! Stan -- The beer is chilling as we speak (a case of Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale). If you feel like a road trip, you're welcome anytime! I thought you might be involved with Johnson conspiracy thing! And we are banging away on those tunes. Sam the Master -- Basically, you can play whatever you want. But, I won't be held responsible if the crowd starts barking and throwing stuff cuz you ain't playing Funk. As for Donna, I think everbody wants to play with Donna. I say let everyone play whatever and with whomever they want. I hope I hear 10 different versions of Inside Lookin' Out. And do bring the Funkahol. I'm telling ya, this is gonna be a homebrewfest too!!! Bill WAP -- I think the roadkill crew will appreciate anything you play. I'd still like to here you do Winter and My Soul. As far as TNUC goes -- Back Row Al and I are arranging a little duet thing. We hope to start practicing this July. Anyway, like I said before, I hope I hear 10 different versions of it good or bad or terrific. So limber up pal and prepare to Grok like you've never Grokked before! You know what I find totally cool no matter what it sounds like? When a band attempts to cover a GFR tune. We've played some raw versions of most of the songs off the LIVE ALBUM. As many mistakes as there are it still sounds good to me (and Bobby, and Smitty). No matter who plays at `98RKFF, it's gonna sound good (the Funk covers). At least that's what I think. I can't wait to mail out copies of the stuff we've recorded so far. I think Funk fans will appreciate the underlying "want" of this music. Backrow Al -- So you like "Good Singin' Good Playin'" as a name for this gig? Phil says he'll like it if we can "live up to it". I'm so psyched right now I don't see how we can't live up to it! And Bobby actually suggested the name, I just thought about it and agreed. Donna -- Judging from the way Bobby "Marshall Stacks" Barravechio cranks his amps this gig is gonna be nothing but loud. That's why we're inviting ALL the neighbors and three cops (really cool cops, if you know what I mean). Whoa, EfahsT@aol.com -- It ain't no "dead end road" here. We think everything's happening and we feel we're making it happen. Sorry, can't get me down. So much has happened concerning GFR in `97 compared to the preceeding 20 years with more to come..... Mickey Pamuska -- We live in Don Imus' hometown, Nueva York. We definately get him around here. I used to be a regular listener, but just couldn't take it anymore. I did listen during some of his best years in the early and mid--80's. That's when both he AND Stern were on the same station. Unbelievable! I just burned you a copy of our first session....I'll try and mail yours and everyone else's by the end of this week. Mark Scarano -- "FBS" . OK I'll mention it to the big kahoona, Bobby and see what he thinks. GSGP is not set in stone yet. Nico -- Let's not even talk about "the boys" being at this party, OK? OK. How much is the plane fare from the Netherlands to NY? Maybe we could offset your costs by taking up a collection. You've done a heck of alot for me (and other people on this list) for a guy way over on the right hand side of the ocean. Maybe we could return the favor by donating cash for all those little trinkets you've sent? Just a thought, I'd really like to meet you and of course, jam with you. Tom Fagan -- You just HAVE to love this roadkill thing. You're addicted man. At least you're not in exile like me. What about the quality of that Beacon video? We're all waiting for a "review". Spit it out already!!! Bugsy -- Softball is just not gonna happen with all the camping and jamming stuff going on. However, there should be plenty of room for volley ball or, if you prefer, whacking your shuttlec0ck. Good idea, that tournament. Alrighta, You just got yourself put in charge of that category. Thank you very much. Mike Butler -- Great promo job at the radio station. The way that story was going I thought you were gonna say you got in on the interview and stole the show from M, D & M....telling all of Vegas about roadkill et al. Jim Jumbolaiya -- Man, I hope you do get to do the backstage thing. I think your chances are pretty good (if you've been s|_|cking up to Donna -- have you sent her virtual flowers lately?). We all have different tastes and expectations as to what is considered 'good' - others might disagree with my assessment, but here's my 'review'. I didn't have real high expectations of the quality, being shot from the balcony and all. When I stuck it in the VCR and the sound of 2001 theme song started up, the first thing I noticed was the camera work. You'll need to pop some dramamine in before viewing the beginning. The camera is all over the place. Up, down, late arrivals blocking the camera, ect. The good news is the camera work does stabilize, but is never perfectly still. The video quality is excellent. The lighting is also surprisingly good. When the camera zooms in you are really close. If not for the movement of the camera it would be awesome. The audio is also really crisp. You can here the crowd in the background, but it doesn't overpower the music at all (except for the chorus of 'closer to home' when Mark gets drowned out from the crowd singing along. . . just got goose bumps). They captured the whole show, intermission and all, no breaks. It's almost two solid hours of GFR at there finest. Yes, you can actually hear the orchestra, a historic moment in Grand Funk history that quite possibly will never be repeated. 'Loneliness' is just unbelievable. I was pleasantly surprised by the video since it was shot from the audience. It's without a doubt worth $20. Here it is: Hi Tom, Whew...you're treading on some very complicated and touchy topics! Many venues themselves don't allow taping of any kind. It's not always the choice of the band. And past records show that there is sometimes pirating and bootlegging to a very large degree...all sorts of copyright laws and stepped on and violated...from many different angles. It's a tough issue...and most people don't mean any harm...that's a given, but it breaks laws, and thats just the way it is. To make a production for just a small group is cost-prohibitive! It all needs to be re-mixed, etc, and eats up a lot of studio time for production and duplication. Hope this maybe addresses a few of these questions...and I haven't even asked Don yet! I'm sure he'd have a lot to say about it. There was some talk that they might have a few of the strings and horns like they did on The Tonight Show but I'd doubt it because of the cost...Howard Eddy is the keyboardist, but only on a back-up level...Most of the songs are done as a trio...I did see him play guitar at the Palace show, so we know he can do that to... Have a great time at the Vegas show and we expect a recap that night... Parrette" Subject: Hi Bill!! Here is June 21 songs Hi Bill, I just can't stay quiet!!! The show tonight was great!!! Mark's guitar was excellent. Donny was great as he has been and Mel, well I heard a couple of comments about Mel being sort of not there but tonight he was back in his prime his roaring bass is back!!! which made the first song really intensified, yet or which made the crowd go excited and crazy. I was at the first row right in front of Mark and everybody was going crazy when they came out with the opening theme "Odessy" and hit the first song Are you Ready. Following is the somgs they played tonight. 1. Are you ready 2. Rock and Roll Soul 3. Footstomping Music 4. Time Machine 5. Medly--- Paranoid Sin's a Goodman's Brother Mr. Limousine Driver ------------------- 6. Heart Breaker 7. Aimless Lady 8. TNUC ---Donny's Drum Solo---- He throws the stick in the air and try to catch but drops it firt time then catchs the second time. Then he bang the snare drum with his head like he used to-- then "are you with me "(but no I wann take you higher) Yeah Yeah Yeah------ 9. Inside Looking OUt--The version in the red album not the caught in the act version 10. Shinin' On--Little short version Mark gets too excited and tries to plays guitar solo longer than planned(at least I saw it that way) but the other member goes bakc to --keep it shinin' on--Mark notice and goes back to his position to sing but perfectly on the rythm with no stress. 11. Locomotion 12. What song do you wanna hear? What? Americ..... Donny strats the cowbell and We're an American Band All the light goes up and on the back screen finger pointing at you Encore 13. Mean Mistreater 14. Some Kind of Wonderful -Donny comes to the front of the page with his sticks and sings then Mark takes vocal Donny goes back to play drum. 15. Get Back In 16. Bad Time 17. Closer to Home 18. Gimme Shelter They certainly sounded better than the last time I saw them in 1982. They were-at least it seemed to me- trying to reproduce the early trio sound and the power. The audience was going crazy including myself. Everybody singing with Mark. Noone in the band took off their shirts. It was the best concert I have seen since 1982. They ar ecompletely back!!! I didn' t meet the bad today. I will send you if I hear anything about official site when I see them along with set list for the next two concerts. Take care and Talk to you soon, Toshi - -------- End Forwarded message -------- Take care, grok in fullness ... Murphy" Date: Sun, 22 Jun 1997 10:52:36 -0400 Subject: Live Album review from 1994 I was going through some old guitar magazines looking for some music when I ran across this comment on the 1970 Live album in the May 1994 issue of Guitar For the Practicing Musician. It was an article on which were the best and worst live rock albums. A lot of his best picks sucked and this is what was said about GFR: Grand Funk Railroad: Live Album (1970) After learning to walk upright and discovery the secret of fire, three Neanderthaloid metalheads from Flint, Michigan formed Grand Funk and cut this vinyl equivalent to Plan 9 from Outer Space. The songs are awful, the sound is horrific, and Mark Farner's guitar solos are positively prehistoric. Wait a minute-this sounds like a description of Blue Cheer! This review was written by Pete Brown who (I think) is currently the editor for Guitar Shop magazine which specializes in equipment. That's good cause he can't recognize a great album when he hears one!!!! No wonder all the American guitar magazines think there is nothing out there but "grunge" and "alternative" music where the "artists" brag about how they never took a lesson and that knowing how to play a guitar or knowing technique is a BAD thing. - -- Murf....
