Phil (Mick's publicity manager) ------------------------------ From: Mike Butler <1kfunkrr@vegasnet.net> Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 11:05:18 -0700 Subject: Vegas Interview The guys just got through with the interview on the local classic rock station. I've had some contact with this station recently. About two weeks ago I stopped by the station (KKLZ) to give a 'Funkengruven' tee shirt to the afternoon DJ, 'The Warrior'. He was the first to announce the Hard Rock gig which I posted to the list well before it was officially announced. He seems to play more GFR than any other DJ and he always mentions the upcoming show. Anyhow I just walked in and told the receptionist I had a shirt for the Warrior, so she knocks on the booth window and told me to hold up the shirt when he turned around. When he saw the shirt he motioned me back in. So I go into the studio and introduce myself and thank him for playing so much Grand Funk and hand him the tee shirt. He thought the shirt was killer and was real impressed with it. We talked alittle bit and I hand him my card as I'm leaving. On the way home he thanks me on the air for 'the killer' tee shirt. Two days later Brigette, our office manager walks in and tells me the Warrior's on line 3 for me. He thanked me for the shirt again and said he wore it to work the next day and the Program Director went ga-ga for it. He said this lady never asks for anything, but she asked him where he got it and if he could get her one, he offered to pay for it, I told him no problem, just keep playing Grand Funk. So this Wednesday I dropped by the station again and gave the shirt to the Warrior, he has someone with him this time. He introduces me to Dan Lee the mid-morning DJ there. Dan admires the shirt and tells me he just has to have one. I told him I'd give him one but he insists on paying for it. We rapped out in the hall for about 5 minutes. I told him about all the shows and how great the guys have sounded. Dan was a real nice guy, about 43 years old so he remembered the band well. All during this time I'm hearing GFR songs I've never heard them play before. Shinnin On, Walk Like a Man, Bad Time (before this the only songs I've heard them play is WAAB and Closer to Home). Yesterday I hear the morning DJs announce that tomorrow they will have a visit from Grand Funk Railroad. So I came to work today with a fresh cassette ready to record the interview. They had Don on the phone first then he switched to speaker phone so Mark and Mel could talk also. The interview lasted about five minutes. No new info on shows or releases. They never mentioned the Auburn Hills Live CD being available this summer. The one DJ is a big Bloodrock fan, so he asks them about Bloodrock. Marks said he talked to a promoter two days ago in Texas who is putting together a show and that Bloodrock is reforming to do the show with the guys. Don did most of the talking. The one DJ couldn't believe Dons voice was the lead on WAAB, Don said something about it being his stage voice and launches into the opening of 'Some Kind of Wonderful' dispelling any doubt. The DJs asked them about working with Rungren and Zappa. All in all a real upbeat interview, the guys sounded real happy. They apparently are still in the States, haven't left for Japan yet. Sorry to ramble on - time to get back to work. - -=Mike=- ------------------------------ From: Bugsy41157@aol.com Date: Fri, 13 Jun 1997 14:14:30 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: from "the deep, dark CAT cave" MCat wrote: >Bugsy -- How the heck are you Mick, Thanks for asking, I'm doing great. The Electric Factory Concert Poster Series QUAKER CITY ROCK FESTIVAL (1970) This memorable colorful portrait of a left-handed guitarist -- shades of Jimi Hendrix - chronicles the long forgotten era of rock festivals. Spawned by the amazing success of Woodstock and Monterey Pop, rock festivals were commonplace, providing more bang for your buck with several top notch attractions on the bill. The Quaker City Rock Festival was no exception with its star-studded bill including Grand Funk Railroad, The Small Faces with Rod Stewart and Eric Burdon and War. W/ Tams & Swinging Medallions. Interwoven w/ footage fr. 1968 docu-film Mondo Daytona. Live material by Grand Funk. 3) Phoenix (import) is listed as available and in stock I've had Phoenix on order at my local CD shop since Apr 4, and I'm really tempted to order it from the web (it's another of those that I've got on album but haven't heard since my turntable broke almost 10 years ago - man, I need to get that thing fixed!) With the exchange rates and the relative value of YEN vs. Dollars it is quite possible that a Japaneese produced disc would cost more than the domestic one. Also remember that IMPORT DUTIES are imposed on anything coming to this country, particularly the FAR EAST. A good example was recently illustrated on a TV show. A NISSAN MAXIMA which is manufactured in JAPAN costs about the same money as an ACCURA LEGEND. The difference is the Legend is actually manufactured in the United States even though ACCURA is really HONDA, a Japanesse firm. SO, with all the hoops that "Made in Japan" now comes with, it is no surprise that the import CD's seem to cost more even though it is the same product. I know some will argue with all this but it is essentially correct. It is an EMI product and whoever remastered it did a super job. Don't kill me, but I only paid $5.00 at a small record (yes, record) store near the Berklee College of Music in Boston. They also had this GFR hits disc with a rendering of E Pluribus Funk on the cover, but I didn't buy it. Hey, Jay, next time that happens, do what I do: just refile the album under a rap artist, go get the scratch and come back later. Worked for me when I found The Red Album, E Pluribus, Caught in the Act, and Collectors ALL AT THE SAME TIME (yeah, like I got $80 on me at the drop of the hat!). ------------------------------ From: jmaijala@sprynet.com Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 12:32:53 -0700 Subject: Re: Totally Funking bummed! Hey Hey Hey, I just got home from BEST BUY and I am listening to the "Closer to Home" CD that I picked up for $9.99. It's the domestic product and not the imported version. That was a lucky stroke on my part (I must say). Oh well, time to go to work. I have bought all the GFR cd's I own at Best Buy. The ones available are: Live Album, Closer to Home, Survival, E Pluribus, WAAB, Shinin On & Caught in the Act. They all cost $9.99 except for the Live Album. All these were on the shelve here in OH except for the Live album. Which I drove to Kentucky for. I was over at Media Play a few days ago and notice that Surivival, E Pluribus WAAB and Caught are available on tape. They also had them on CD plus Closer to Home. No Shinin On or Live tho. And yes of course they had the Collector Series. Well just wanted to share some info. Keep Shinin On... ##=====(SAM) ------------------------------ From: MASAAC@aol.com Date: Tue, 17 Jun 1997 20:24:16 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: Virus warning DO NOT DOWNLOAD A FILE CALLED "AMBER.
