He toured with GFR in the mid-seventies and is in the R n R hall of fame. Eric will be at Tramps on July 1st. I just saw him in Sacramento the other day and was blown away. This man and his band just SMOKE. He plays all of the biggies from his Animal days as well as fantastic new tunes. This man is the real thing. I have seen Eric many times since the mid-sixties, and just like GFR, time has only made his music better. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!!!!! Sadly, God is being systematically removed from our society and Manson is at the forefront of the movement. I think that your generation has been adversely affected by the vomit that is splewed out of the television set 24 hours a day and the fact that many more of your generation come from one or no parent families as compared to the 1970's family structures. Sorry to get political, but I think that you Gen Xers are at a big disadvantage with the state of society today. Your letter just got me going a little bit. Some of us have forgotten that we were influenced by people like Jim Morrison (O.D.), Jimi Hendrex (O.D.), Janis Joplin (O.D.), the dude who played guitar for Chicago (shot himself thru the head), Country Joe (foul mouth), and many other assorted generation associates (Alice Cooper....Alice?). Grand Funk Railroad was RAW, LOUD, and ALIVE! There music is simple and likeable.......you get the point. Anyway, I got a new video from IVY Video called "Get Down grand Funk", Nico (NBoger) told me about it. Its a documentry about partying collage students and bikers. But at the begining theres a video of paranoid, it's the Red Album version. Then tord the end theres a version of into the sun, its live in studio (no audiance) it kicks ass. these are the same Video's that Jeff cockren has on his GFR retrospctive tape that he sends out for a donation. But they look great. It was 35$. there is an 800 number for ivy video on Donna's site, in the interactive fourm, look for getdown grand funk. ------------------------------ From: michael.demattei@milliman.com Date: Thu, 12 Jun 1997 9:01:01 -0800 Subject: Re: Rare GFR recordings. >NON-LP SONGS? >I was send a list of unreleased B-sides:=20 >DESTITUTE AND LOSIN >LET IT HAPPEN >ON THE AVENUE >NO FALSE IDOL >Does anybody happen to have them, ever heard them? Right. So, as Murphy would have it.....Bobby hands me the audio tape that was recorded right out of the PA. This version totally blows my recording away. Please bear with me, I'm gonna re-record the copies with the "good" version. Now I can see why Nancy was so excited when she heard the tape....you can hear the vocals clear-as-day. Bobby really has Farner's phrasing and Smitty does some really good harmonies. I not ringing my own bell here, I'm just in awe of this version. My little toy mics didn't catch half the stuff I'm hearing now. Aside from my blatant F^( } U?s, I don't feel so bad sending this out to the general public. I just image wise-guy-Whirley handing a copy over to Farner saying, "Check this out, can you sue these guys or what?"!!! Speaking of Whirleybird -- you now have dibs on "Can't be too Long". I checked with Bobby and as expected he's more than happy to do that one. So it's on the list, just let us know which part you're playing and/or singing. Phil -- I spoke with Bobby about Just Couldn't Wait; he said there's alot going on in that song. After talking for a while we came up with the idea of doing the song as a joint venture with HST. So you practice your lead part, we'll do the rest. Gas-n-Oil Guy -- Our good buddy, Mike Adair (), wants to talk to you about a beer menu. He's excited about the "Grand Funk Ale Road" (IPA, I hope?). Give him a ringy dingy on the tele (actually, email him). We have the beginnings of a homebrew fest along with our Grand Funkings (a couple of my friends are going to donate a couple of batches of their stuff). Oh Lord, what could be better? Steve Lisuk -- Thanks for the heads-up on the Eric Burdon gig. I didn't call but I'm thinking about it. Does it snow in Michigan in July? It's finally summer here on LI and I don't want to think about the impending winter. Bugsy -- How the heck are you? Bill Parrette -- Are you gonna play Winter and My Soul, or what? Stan -- I just saw Independence Day (the movie). Are we safe from aliens Mr. Joints Chief of Stash Atlantic Military Command?!? Are you withholding info? And was Mark Farner really involved in a plot to assassinate President Johnson (if you play People Let's Stop the War backwards you can hear Farner whispering "Johnson must die, Johnson must dir..." There weren't any songs that they played at the LA show that weren't on one of their studio albums. And the last songs of the show were Closer To Home/I'm Your Captain (from Closer To Home) and Loneliness (from E Pluribus) as the encore. I guess the lesson here is don't believe everything you hear, especially when it's about Grand Funk! Well, I just broached the subject of attending the jam to my wife and, at this point in time, she didn't have a problem with it. I don't know if her and the kids (teen-agers) will come with me, but I'm going to do the best I can to be there. Mick (I'm assuming that brother Phil will pass this along), on your visit to Ohio, you may have noticed that I have a bit of a nervous condition. The doctors tell me it is degenerative in na- ture -- I'm just hoping that I'll be in good enough shape to not make too big a fool of myself in front of the roadkill crew and friends next summer. That being said, I would *love* to drum to Winter and My Soul! And, if I could, I would *love* to help kick off the festivities with Are You Ready on the drums as well. If I'm not sounding too greedy, I'd like to do drums on We're an American Band and maybe even Rock 'n Roll Soul. Now there is another song I'd love to drum to as well, but I think that *everyone* is going to want to do this one and I have a feeling that it is going to end up as one big jam. My ulterior motive is, of course, to play with ... er, uh ... I mean to get close to ... oh darn ... that doesn't sound right either ... to jam with (there we go that was hard ... er, uh, ... oh, never mind!) the lovely and talented Donna Wightman. I'd *really* love to drum on Inside Looking Out. ;-) Oh, BTW, I *don't* think I'll embarrass myself with T.N.U.C. unless I can get Don to show me that part we discussed. :-( Which brings up another point: what do you think our chances are of getting "the boys" to attend the party? Let's keep this thing in the groove, folks. Funkengruven '98 is bound to be one hell of a party ... Nothin' but a party ... we're gonna' lay back and do it right ... the new generation along with the old. Keep Shinin' On and always grok in fullness ...
