I read the article and the critic did not in any way complain about the GFR logo. He simply pointed out that they have brought out the old pointed finger logo. Grand Funk has been out of the public eye for a long time, unlike the Stones and Steppenwolf, both of which have consistently put out new music and toured regularly over the years. If Grand Funk fans are so thin skinned that they can brook no criticism, the message sent is that GFR has reached the zenith of their career and can go no higher. Nobody in this life has achieved perfection that I know of, and when we stop striving to reach higher, we stagnate and fall by the wayside. Healthy, open criticism is one way to deeper thought and further progress. As to the critics, they have their place and not all of them are biased, but even if they are, they are entitled to their opinion. If we all believed the same thing, we would be no better than sheep; some call them sheople. So FUCK the critics and give them no more crerdence than you would anyone else's opinion. It is the fans who elevated GFR to stardom, not the critics and energy directed toward them is energy diverted. It was a great show! And from what I remember everyone stood the whole show. I still have my shirt from the show albeit a bit tight (I wore this shirt to the Beacon show but I had to cover it with my Funkengroovin' tee). I was on my way to college in Columbus when I heard about the show on a local radio station (Q something I think). My college roommate Randy & I went and got tix the next day. We went to the show early in the day to see if we could meet the band. They weren't there but I got to rap to Donnie's drum tech. Do you remember that during Footstompin' Mark's guitar wasn't audible during the lead break? It seemed to me that the crowd didn't notice but I did, and so did Mark (he was annoyed). I think they finally fixed (turned on or up) Mark's guitar by the end of the song. After the show Randy & I sneaked back stage where we met Mark, Don & Dennis (Berriger-Bass player on Lives for those of you who ask). We rapped with Dennis for a while. I went over and introduced myself to Donnie and told him that I was a drummer who was inspired by him (I'll never forget that feeling of meeting my drum idol. I'm hope that I'll have another opportunity). We spent most of the time rappin' with Mark about his log cabin house he built (heard about it during a pre-show radio interview). We were also teasing Mark by telling him that that chic on the other side of the room wanted him, the hot bumble-bee babe (she was wearing a back & yellow striped top). Mark was so cool, he just laughed and said something like "if I bring home anything to my wife she'll kill me!". Talking with Mark was like talking to an old friend. I told him I was there at the Suffolk Forum on Long Island (w/ the Cat Bro's & some of the LI Boys) where he opened up as a solo artist for Charlie Daniels and got hit with a bottle & booed off stage. He replied something about $#%& those CD red-neck's. While backstage, we got our tix autographed by the guys. I don't know how, but I lost my autographed ticket (that hurt). Randy got caught trying to walk off with Mark's backstage tour pass but got snagged. Mark wasn't too happy about that and neither was I (didn't want to get tossed). Randy wound up walking off with it anyway. He showed me the pass on the way home. So Randy had his autographed ticket and Mark's backstage tour pass to show for getting backstage. I was left with only "Memories" (no complaint here). Randy wasn't a Funk fan until the start of the show and he certainly was a bigger fan on our way home. Well, to sum it up, I was there, it was a great show, and it's so cool to find a roadkiller who was there also. Sorry to be too wordy gang. Also, to those of you who have heard this story before, sorry for repeating myself. I love re-telling this story because of the way it make me feels. Hope to get backstage again someday, Funk Lives! Hey folks, I just watched the Jay leno GFRR video for umteenth millionth time and I noticed that at the end of 'American Band' Mark has his finger pointed out just like the t-shirts. I wonder if they will go after him for that as well...hmmmmmmmmm possible violation of some copywrite law or just to funk with him. Also mabe I am still living in the '70's but I still do not know who the keyboard player is...Craig Frost, I don't think so! I am referring to the concert at the Greek in L.A., as well as the Leno show. anyone know? I'm sure roadkill can provide me with an answer. thanks, tom tom-span@pacbell.net ------------------------------ From: Bill Cook Date: Tue, 03 Jun 1997 19:52:10 -0700 Subject: Re: Update: Ringo/Farner CD John Roehlen wrote: > > Just heard the commercial again. Here's some interesting Ringo news...last Friday's Ringo show at Pine Knob, Clarkston, Mi (outside of Detroit), was taped for future video release... 3 audience cameras, 2 boom cameras, and 2 stage hand held cameras - the same setup as GFR at the Palace. Hopefully both (GFR and Ringo) will be a reality this year! ------------------------------ From: RCinSinCty@aol.com Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 01:22:37 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Cut I can't beleive Capitol cut the drum solo to make the Live Album fit on one CD. But the Capitol release in Japan for the live album is a double CD. I guess they figure the Japanise arn't as cheeep as us Americans (before you guys jump on me i'm being sarcastic). I got a copy of the import at a store in torrance Ca called disc connection, its around $50. That's allot extra fro a drum solo, but with Don well worth it. ------------------------------ From: AllenD4545@aol.com Date: Wed, 4 Jun 1997 02:41:13 -0400 (EDT) Subject: GFR in Indiana Greetings All: I recently learned that GFR will appear late in July in both Fort Wayne and South Bend, Indiana. What I'd like to know is if anyone has ANY information about whether they'll be appearing here in Indianapolis. I'm more than willing to drive to either of those two cities, but my old truck is getting long in the tooth, and I need to baby it for a few more months. Besides, I can't believe that as hot as the tour has been so far that they'd pass up an opportunity to play one of the great venues Indy has to offer, especially considering that they have an enormous following here in central Indiana. Any info would be appreciated. I can be e-mailed at AllenD4545@aol.com. Allen GFR Forever!
