I've never known the story of the video with him, Russ Taff, and another Christian musician who's name I can't remember. Does anyone know the video I'm talking about? The song? The CD the song is on? Was the song popular on the Christian charts? When was it released? Especially, how did Farner and Taff (one of my favorite artist) come to unite on this song/video? What was/is their relationship? Has Taff, or his guitarist, ever confessed to a Grand Funk influence on themselves? I think Taff, who I've seen twice in concert, kept the same guitarist through most, if not all, of his solo projects. Sorry, I can't remember the guitarist's name either. But I remember when I use to listen to Taff's CD, named simply "Russ Taff", there were several songs that I would hear and swear they must have listened to old Grand Funk stuff. Particularly the songs, "(Living On The) Edge Of Time", "Believe In Love", and "I Still Believe," all had the same energy and style as Grand Funk, in my opinion. I'd just shake my head in wonder at the similarity of their music on those songs. It was later that I saw Farner in a video with Taff and the other artist, so I've wondered if anyone has read, heard, or seen anything that can answer my questions. ------------------------------ From: RCinSinCty@aol.com Date: Sun, 1 Jun 1997 11:46:38 -0400 (EDT) Subject: review hears a crummy review i downloaded from AOL. Grand Funk Railroad (Greek Theater; 6,187 seats; $33 top) By Phil Gallo HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Reunited after 20 years, Grand Funk Railroad locks themselves into their early '70s halcyon days, a period when their records and concert tickets were among the best-selling in the world. They even go so far as to dust off the old pointed-finger logo. This reunion effort is a wisely assembled greatest hits package that, for all its musical shortcomings, covers the band's spacey meanderings and goodtime boogie with considerable accuracy, going deep in pleasing a long-neglected fan core. Show was divided into two hourlong sets, the first performed as a trio and dedicated to the uptempo hits -- Foot-Stompin' Music, The Locomotion and We're an American Band stoked by guest guitarist Slash grafting a few tricks of the '90s onto the GFR anthem. The addition of the Sarajevo Symphony Orchestra sent the focus to GFR's formative days, when five- to seven-minute songs were the norm, and off-kilter tempo shifts orchestrated by the still-fine drummer Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher stamped a singular identity on the band's work. Execution of the second set was perfect and in many ways a more enjoyable exercise than any previous Grand Funk tour. Attempts to fortify the 8-track days with the energy that defined their top 40 hits loaded their shows with a whoop-it-up frenzy that could easily fall flat in the mid-'70s; here the intricacies of the original recordings are laid bare, none more stirring than the concert finale Closer to Home/I'm Your Captain. Concert lacked any sense of progress for the band -- no new songs, no reworked numbers, no obscurities -- and that may eventually cut into the return appeal of the show. And for a band that was effectively at ground zero of the corporate rock movement, the evening was decidedly understated: a light show of green lasers was used with subtlety and staging was generally limited to Mark Farner pacing to and fro. To some degree, shows in L.A. and New York are expected to pique some interest in getting the band signed. Group is reportedly planning to record over the next few weeks before touring Japan and Europe with a handful of U.S. dates in the summer; a Sept. 19 performance in Sarajevo with other artists, U2 headlining, is also on the boards. A benefit for the Bosnian Relief Fund presented by Nederlander Concerts. Band: Mark Farner, Don Brewer , Mel Schacher, the Sarajevo Symphony Orchestra and the Vine Street Horns. Guests: Slash, Billy Preston, Alto Reed. Reviewed May 2, 1997. And its hard to get, i found it at a CD shop in Redondo beach ca. It has a concert in japan from1982 with Footstompin Music, paranoid, No reason Why, Queen Bee, Closer to home, Heartbreaker, Meanmistreater, Were An American Band, T.N.U.C., Inside looking out, Locomotion, Gimme Shelter and weve got to get out of this place. To fill the 2ed CD they put an old GFR bootleg from 1971 called get funked on it. It has Are you ready, Paranoid (great version), inneed (long guitar solo), meanmistreater And a closer to home medley with hooked on love. The sound quality of the 82 show is good for a bootleg and the 71 show is ok, better then the album version which I have, get it in 72 at a sweepmeet in torrance ca. I'm willing to make copys for trade for other GFR, Mark farner, Flint, shows. This was a "good" review, not a "bad" one, and of course this is just one man's opinion. The reviewer never said that the concert was NOT fantastic and as a matter of fact he says some good things about Grand Funk Railroad and the concert. He also provides food for thought, in particular, the fact that there was no new music. GFR can't rest on their laurels and expect to regain their former stature. Let's see how the next six months to a year pan out. I am hoping that their current studio work and tour will catapult them to the top again. ------------------------------ From: Pamuska@aol.com Date: Mon, 2 Jun 1997 11:00:15 -0400 (EDT) Subject: a few comments Hi gang, thanks to Mr. Doug Devers I have had the pleasure to listen to Whats Funk? by the boys.. Now I know to some it wasn't a true GFR endevor but to my surprise I liked the album. After GPGS came out I remember getting my copy of Grand Funk Lives and was pretty much disappointed. So thanks to this group, I found out there was a 2nd almost GFR album out there and I had to have one. There were a couple of songs that was weak but for the most part I liked the album. I can't wait till this August to get the new Live cd.
