As a songwriter myself since I was 14 years old, I know how a person's songwriting style can change and go through different styles over the years. I think Mark must have been going through one of his "mellow" phases during Survival. That is one of the great things about GFR (imho), is that they appeal to a wide variety of people, from Donnie's songs, Mark's boogie stuff, Mark's mellow stuff, Mark's hard-edge stuff, and then of course the cover songs that brought in a whole new audience. "Ungodly experiment of Knights", hmmmmmmm, that sounds like some great lyrics for a song : ) > > What is bizarre is when I said I was turning in 125 I began to get 2-5 a > day for a couple of weeks. I love to look at other people's creative work. To me, the Internet is like art, but better, because of all the information. Obviouly, our *good buddy* Carl doesn't know how to use Frontpage to it's potential (although I havn't seen his site in awhile.) I am using Frontpage 97 now, it really makes keeping the site updated easier, as you just design the pages in a "publisher" type program, and it writes all the HTML for you. You are gonna love all the features of the program. I use Adobe Photo Shop 4.0 also, but take a look at MS Image Composer that comes with Frontpage 97, it is a totally cool program. Bill still uses Vi, I believe, which is a text editor program for UNIX (you know Bill, a *die-hard* UNIX man : ) ) I did use notepad for a long time, up until I revamped my site here a couple of months ago, when I started using Frontpage 97. Knowing HTML definitely helps though, even when you are using a HTML generating program like Frontpage. At least you understand what you are doing! If you have any questions about Frontpage, I'll be glad to help anyway I can! Was it about 9 months? I know that CTH came out in 1970 and that Survival was put out in 1971. I personally beleive that Mark was hitting a dry spell in the writing department at that time. We all have our down times!! Remember, Don and Mel wern't really writing much at the time(although I think Mel can really compose if given half a chance). As the albums go, I have said that Survival was my least favorite (don't hit me). It's too muffled. This snare sound was unique to this album. In my opinion, the snare sound was changed for the better in EP Funk. Personally, I don't like the sounded of muffled drums, I like them to ring. There is nothing like that feeling in your gut when you hit the 18" floor tom or the 24" bass. I have a Ludwig Super Sensitive chrome snare with no muffling. I think Donnie had this same snare at one time (never mind the same set). The sound of the snare, bass & toms that appeals to me most is from LIVE. That's what my set sounds like. BooM...Crack Terry Knight - He's a $%/& if he sued Farner. Even if he didn't sue him, he's a $%?&. Concerts - Sorry to hear no GFR show this summer at Jones Beach (I know, no outdoor shows). Also, would like to see them back in NY by the end of the year. With the worldwide tour underway, Capitol will be forced to reissue them, or face a lot of lost revenues. Their releases are inevitable. I think we need to focus on two other topics. First, every one of them should be completely digitally re-mastered, and include all of the original artwork. Second, I would love to see studio outtakes and live versions added to these releases. There is more than enough room on CDs to include them. Just look at all of the material Capitol has been releasing from the Beatles. After the release of three double Anthology CDs, Capitol's tape vaults are still overflowing with unreleased Beatles studio outtakes. Capitol was forced into issuing these Anthology CDs because of lost sales to the bootleggers. What about Grand Funk's outtakes? Where are they and why haven't we seen them come out in countless forms of bootlegs? Capitol threw us a bone when they included an alternate intro to "Closer To Home" on the 'Collector's Series' CD. Maybe a campaign to also have this material included is possible. By the way, "All The Girls..." is being reissued in Japan around June 26th. I also saw that some other titles already released on CD in Japan might be reissued with extra tracks. (This according to an advertisement I saw by a store called 'Jart Music' - http://www.webcreations.com/jart) Why should Capitol Records in USA be any different than Capitol Records in Japan? It was fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll never forget it! Is it possible to get a copy of the tape? When I started playing guitar 25 years ago, my second guitar was (and still is) a mid-60s Messenger stereo in sunburst finish. I had to have it, because of Mark. Its still the sweetest sounding guitar Ive ever played. Does anyone know how Mark started with this particular guitar (instead of the usual Les Pauls and Strats)? It was a studio effort that Mark and Don put together BEFORE they formed GFR. Originally, it was only sold through a TV ad....it later started showing up at discount record stores. The first pressing came out as a picture disc with Mark on one side and Don on the other as pictured on the cover. It was so bad but I have to admit that I have one...... Somebody's got to respond. It may as well be me. I had Shinin' On and ATGITWB in high school and thought they were pretty good. In 1977, I purchased GSGP in a cutout bin for 99 cents! I listened to that disc once and fell in love. I think that I'm the only roadkiller that got turned on by the later stuff first. Sorry to respectfully disagree Mickey(pamuska), but I love BTD. I think that Mark's lead guitar work got better with every album. I think that GSGP is GFRR's longest studio album(over 46 minutes). I have a CREEM magazine from 1976, which I'll try to dig out for you guys and in it they ask Zappa how he likes working with our heroes. Zappa said that GFRR was not stuck up like most rockers and they did things that he could relate to like shoot slingshots and fart on each other! I promise that I'll keep looking for that article. Leo Bartoli - record shows are where I find most of my great vinyl and I got 3-D glasses from a Burger King promotion some time ago and that Shinin' On poster looked pretty cool through them. I've written the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and I can't seem to get mail through. I'll persist. Talk soon, guys. Later. I listened to that disc once and fell in love. Yes! I agree about GSGP. I started being a Grand Funk fan soon after On Time came out. I bought it unheard as a title from a record club and never looked back. I was in Montreal in around 1977 (to see Pink Floyd) when I , too, bought GSGP for about 99 cents. I thought it was wonderful. To this day it remains one of my favourites. I have always liked 1976 and Crossfire. Big Buns is kinds interesting , too!
