We all know what a chair is , but what are the essential elements it must have to be a chair? What does this have to do with GFR? Good question. It just struck me the other day, while reading a post (by Phil?) about Grand Funk albums without Mel not being Grabnd Funk, that GFR is one of the very few bands who needs all the elements to be Grand Funk. If it ain't got ALL THREE of Mark, Don and Mel, it may be good, but it ain't GFR. How many other bands require all members present to be considered the band? Obviosely not the Stones, who have switched and replaced happily, nor Pink Floyd, nor almost any other band I can think off. In fact, the only other ones that come immediately to mind are the Beatles, Cream, The Who (someone said Who turns after Keith Moon's death were just session musicians, that included former Who members, covering Who songs), and Led Zeppelin. Given five minutes, I'm sure I could think of more. All of these bands were ones which required (or would require) all members present to be considered the proper band. Hi Ken, I agree that it is hard to replace 1/3 of a band, especially when that 1/3 is a bass player as good as Mel. This may well be why GFR hasn't played anything from the "Lives" of "What's Funk?" albums. But I look at it like this, if Mark Farner and Don Brewer feel alright about calling it Grand Funk, who am I to argue with them? Those were both fine albums. They could've called themselves "The Farner-Brewer Band" for all I care, I still would have bought the albums. Just my 2 cents worth :-) Randy ------------------------------ From: Randy Stowe Date: Thu, 08 May 1997 11:24:58 -0500 Subject: Re: GFR CD Vote Phil Catalano wrote: > I don't want to be an A-Hole here folks, but... Sunny did specify that Capitol is the label looking to release the CD's. Maybe after the reunion is steamrolling along, MCA and Full Moon will get off their rumps and get with the program. They won't do it 'till they smell the money though. Randy ------------------------------ From: Ken Blackley Date: Thu, 08 May 1997 10:43:10 -0600 Subject: Re: When is a Chair not a Chair? But I don't consider the band that plkayed on nit to be Grand Funk, but Mark Farnar, Don Brewer and another guy (Dennis Bellinger? I forget . . .) But I still don't consider them Grand Funk albums, anymore than I consider Mark's solo efforts to be Grand Funk. Mark and Don can make great music without Mel (which they do), but the result isn't Grand Funk, at least to me. > Ken > Randy ------------------------------ From: Phil Catalano Date: Thu, 8 May 1997 10:45:50 -0600 (MDT) Subject: Re: ...no subject... This transmission is my first attempt to the GFR mailing list. Hope it works. Here are some of my most favorite musicians and music. A mix of some old, dear ones and some new inspiring ones. Outside of Grand Funk and Kitaro, no particular order. Is someone tabulating the results? 1. Grand Funk Railroad 2. Kitaro 3. The Rolling Stones 4. October Project 5. Enya 6. Pink Floyd 7. Aerosmith 8. Beethoven 9. Alice Cooper 10. Led Zeppelin 11. Three Dog Night 12. The Who 13. Hendrix I'm sure I've missed some. ps If in NY, I'll be there, if invited.... Thank God for Grand Funk Railroad!!! Leo ------------------------------ End of grand-funk-digest V1 #56 *******************************
