Just thought I'd share this with the rest of you Funk-Heads. I met a Grand Funk fan about a month ago here in Co Springs at one of our jam sessions. Of course, like the rest of us, we immediately hit it off. So, he tells me about this Rush concert he's going to see and that he might have an extra ticket. So I told him if he does I'd love to go. Well, he just called me up and told me that he can't make the concert at all, he's got a class to go to that week--Bummer! So anyway he says I'll give you a good deal on the tix. So I said, what deal, I'll just pay you whatever you paid for them. So he says well, I paid $72 for the 2 tix, I'll give them to you because you're a Grand Funk fan!!! Can you believe it?! Anyway, I'm gonna give him $60 for them. So now I'm getting deals on Rush tix because I'm a Funk fan! Explain that one! By the way, I'm an old time Rush fan and that Neal Peart, he's a good drummer but he's no Don Brewer! OH! Just thought I'd share that tidbit with you! And then to chauffer our kentucky-fried-chicken-eatin' butts from the hotel to the Derby! Then to chauffer us from the Derby to the Greek! Then to include us in the "Top Ten List" for the after-show party! Chance of a lifetime! Then to chauffer us from the Greek back to the Derby! Then to chauffer us from the Derby back to the Hotel! Then the next day, chauffering us all over the LA area and to our final destination Venice Beach! What a great time that was! And then finally, chauffering our Yankee butts to the airport! They had a song called "Hot Smoke and Sasfras(?)" that was on the charts for a while. I remember I liked the song at eh time, but it dissapeared quickly. I also remember seeing their album, with the guys (maybe three?) who looked a lot like Ron Bushy from Iron Butterfly on the cover wearing flower shirts. This was released in 1969 on International Artists Records. They were from Austin, TX. I think their album has been re-released on CD by a small label. I think it's called "A Gathering of Promises", something like that anyway. I've got the song on a K_Tel compilation from a bargain bin at Wherehouse Records a couple of years ago. By the way, it reached #14 on the Billboard charts (according to the liners). A HOT, JAMMING TUNE, that is a must hear! The group also recorded as "Demian" in the later years (again - the liners). Although Capitol won't believe me, I'd buy all the CD's listed except Mark, Don and Mel (I would already have all the cuts on other CDs). For proof, I should mention that I already have ALL of the GFR vinyl and US release CDs (including the CEMA products from Canada). True Funkheads like me would sure go for a box set (4-6 discs) with some rarities (studio and live) and a serious booklet (something like the Who's or Steve Miller's - not a rehash of existing artwork. But I also understand that most of the world falls short of my level of interest. Collector's Series and More Of The Best Of cover a lot of fans, but I don't think it would take care of the 15,000 at the Palace (or the 12,000 at Pine Knob last summer). The hardcore fans need something special like a box set AND the reissue of the cds. My priority list for Capitol (in order) would be: On Time, Grand Funk, Live, Survival, Phoenix, Live, Girls, Born, Shinin On (if remixed versus the Canadian version). Heck...all I want is 9 CDs plus a box set from Capitol and MCA's consideration for the balance. PS - Tell the gang to hurry up and edit the VH1 Palace Video - I want to see if our 12th row makes the "cut". THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for doing this. I know you are really busy, but I've been a fan of GFR since I heard the RED lp when it was released in 1970. I'm a gtr/key plr that loves many styles of music-xcpt rap/country/opera and have over 1000 different groups. I LOVE GRAND FUNK RAILROAD and have been really influenced over the years by their music. I remember watching them on The Indian Mid-Summer Rock Concert just before I entered the USAF. I bought a stereo record player and could only afford one lp so I made it GFR-Live Album. It is the GREATEST Live recording I have ever heard(if you follow this list you'll see I'm not alone in this assessment) Could you do me a favor please? Relay this message to Mark Farner for me: I have played for 30 yrs. and have many faves I won't start cause' I won't stop. You are the one guitarist who helped me the most in my development around 1971-4. Inside Looking Out was my breakthrough on learning how to solo. I can't thank you enough Mark. God has blessed you with so much, and like you I want to be an airborne ranger. Before I drift away from the subject, I VOTE FOR THAT LIST. It is really hard to pick 1 over another. The one that I don't have in any case is PHOENIX so that would be first. Cause it's been so long since I've heard it. My list is PHOENIX LIVE ALBUM ON TIME GRAND FUNK(red) SURVIVAL SHINI'N ON ALL THE GIRLS IN THE WORLD BEWARE BORN TO DIE CAUGHT IN THE ACT( with the identical trak running order as the original lps. I know it wasn't in your list of options, but I think I'm safe in saying," None of us is happy with the current cd of CITA Because of the editing out of the intro. Band chatter(we like that stuff) and the ? edits of I'm Your Captain into Heartbreaker not to mention what happened to your Husband's excellent drum solo in T.N.U.C. We would really appreciate Capitol re-considering this. After-all it is us that will gladly pay for this to happen. So I hope that Capitol will keep this in mind. We all are working together for the prime purpose of hearing GFR's music with the best quality possible. Again thank you and Capitol and esp. GRAND FUNK RAILROAD for the music and the memories. God Bless You All. Rand Kelly,45 Rocki'n in the Redwoods. ------------------------------ End of grand-funk-digest V1 #54 *******************************
