I was at a club tonight to check out my friends band play, and in between bands the sound man would play some songs. All of a sudden he puts in a new CD, and I heard the begining drum part to "We're an American Band". As soon as the music kicked in, I realized that this wasn't GFR's version. The music was done very well. They didn't take away any feeling what so ever from the original. I was incredibly impressed! I wasn't all that crazy about hearing someone else sing the song though. I guess that's one thing that's best left up to the original artist. I asked the guy who re-did the song, and he told me who it was. Now here's the thing. It's been a looooong night for me, I'm exhausted and I have a headache, SO, I forgot the name of the group that he told me! It had three names and I think it was the name of the singer. Does that give anyone an idea? I think this album is a newer release. It came from or was recorded in Japan, or something like that. If anyone knows the name, please let me know... otherwise I'll have to try and find out again. I'll let you know if I do. Hi Everyone, We just got home and I run to my computer first thing and download 141 e-mail messages. I will get back to everyone who e-mailed me personally tomorrow evening after work. You'd think I performed at the Greek as tired and exhausted as I am! First, I want to say that everyone we met from the Internet are incredible people. Allen and I had the *best* weekend of our lives with all you guys. Mick and Phil, Steve, Carol and Steve's brother, Mike and Sharon, Robert and his friend (sorry I forgot his name), you guys made the weekend for us! Thank you all for guiding me through it, as I think I temporarily lost my mind this weekend! I'll just cover briefly what happened for now, but will write again tomorrow and tell everything I can remember. Steve's post is true about Letterman. Sunny Quinn told us that they will be doing some sort of comedy sketch and not performing, but will schedule another date to perform sometime later. The reason is as Steve explained in his earlier post. Sunny also said that they believe the only reason Dave (or his people) decided he wanted them at the last minute is because they did the Tonight Show. Because of this last minute scheduling of the Letterman show, they will not go into the studio this week in L.A. (as was originally planned), but instead be flying back to New York for the show on Thursday night. The Backstage party was incredible and I'm still not sure what happened yet as I was floating (and still am) in some sort of surreal fog! I still can't believe it all happened. The only damper on the whole thing was that Bill Parrette and Jeff Cochran weren't standing beside me sharing in the incredible moment. (Bill, Jeff, you guys deserved to be there.) The great thing is, is that we *did* make a mark and they noticed! The boys (especially Don and Mark) and Sunny and David Fishof were very, very gracious to us and were thanking us for what we have done to promote the band. I made it a point to tell each one of them that you guys from the Internet are the true GFR fans, and have never waivered in your dedication to them. I also let them know how far some of you traveled to see them. Dena (Not sure if it's spelled correctly) Schacher (Mel's wife of 27 years) told us that their son Jamie visits our sites frequently to keep them updated as to what is going on at the sites. I didn't take any pictures, (yeah, I was an airhead this weekend) but Mike Butler, Mick Catalano and Steve Lisuk did and so I will be spending the next few weeks trying to get everything up on the site so you all can share in the excitement! The show was the greatest concert I ever saw! (and that's not just because it was Grand Funk Railroad, well, maybe just a little : ) ) More reviews will come from Mick and Phil who took notes. I better get some rest now before work tomorrow, but just want to end on this note... Not only is Grand Funk Railroad *the* greatest band that ever was and is, but their fans are the best people too! You guys were great and I'm looking forward to meeting all of you again soon. (Las Vegas if I can get tics.) Grand Funkengruven forever... I strongly suspect that if you contacted Fishoff and requested permission (as required by copyright law), it would be denied. The fact that GFR chose to copyright their material legally and morally requires us to honor that. Alright lets be honest guys.............How many of you have a boot cassette or video? Most of you I'll bet. And if you are like me you will continue to buy then until the record companies get off there tails and release them. I'll buy German, Japanese and any form of bootleg I desire until it becomes available in a more 'proper' form. I think I can speak for Mike when I say we don't care who gets a tape from us. We are just hard core fanatics that want everything we can get our hands on. And we think some of you might be also. So we made the offer. Hey we buy the cassettes, record them, package them and then go to the PO and pay for shipping. Heck we aren't making any money at $10 a tape. We are doing this as a favor to fellow funkers. If you are interested cool, if your morals won't allow such a thing cool. Funkola out PS: There are thousands of BL's on the net Rex. I'm not criticizing anyone in particular here, because we are ALL intitled to our opinions, and I respect the hell out of the person who gave his (or her) opinion about not agreeing with bootlegs. I personally don't see anything wrong with bootlegs. GFR most likely gets paid no matter what, and you know damn well that the boys would probably still make music even if they DIDN'T get paid. I think they are proving that by this whole tour....That's the whole beauty behind their music and why it reaches so many people that are so different from each other. How many people are on this e-mail list? How many different cities? How many different careers? Yet we all have a common bond, which is getting our rocks off by listening to Sin's a Good Man's Brother so loud your nose bleeds. I personally would be flattered if someone bought a bootleg of MY albums. To me it proves that you're are not just an average cookie-cutter fan, rather you are willing to go the extra mile to experiance something new with a band you can really relate to. I guess this letter didn't really have a point, in case anyone is wondering. I just wanted to express an opinion. As a drummer who went from playin' in a rock band to playin' in a blues band 3 years ago, I found great blues music from B.B., Albert & Freddie King, Stevie Ray, Muddy Waters, the Allman Bro's and a bunch others. Basically, I like all types of music except rap. The best music though, is live music. Its somewhat verbose, as I am not 100% sure this is obtainable through Capitol proper. ============================== Part # S21X 57818 copyright 1994 CEMA Special Markets The Collector's Pipeline part# TCP006CD ================== Description: Front is red/white like original LP with 'S21X 57818' number near the bottom. Inside cover is a decent photo of Mark, Don, and Mel. Back of cover in real tiny, tiny letters (I don't think I could read this even if I was 25 again) is the song cuts, engineer, cover design credits, and producer credits naming Terry Knight. In the lower righthand corner is a Capitol records logo. The CD is Silver with white lettering and a red circle outlining the outer edge of the CD. There is a front shot of a train, the words GRAND FUNK in a 'fuzzy' font, the listings of the cuts and duration. Of note, there is a picture of a gear with the words 'The Collector's Pipeline' shooting out of the center. There is a number directly below that, TCP006CD. Following that number is another icon of "Cema" written out in longhand, the number "S21X 57818", a copyright symbol with '1994', and the text 'CEMA Special Markets'. On the back cover is some more of the same stuff that's on the CD proper, plus the text '1994 CEMA Special Markets. Produced exclusively for The Collector's Pipeline through CEMA Special Markets. Product of CEMA SPecial Markets, a division of Capitol Records, Inc. All rights reserved.'. ====================== Hope this helps. I wasn't positively sure this came from Capitol, but I never heard of The Collector's Pipeline before I bought the CD. I'm going on a little hunt to find out more. I'll let you Funkers know if I uncover anything. By the way, I found this little gem at Blockbuster Music, and there was only one. The personnel could not pin down how it got on the shelf. There was nothing in their books regarding same. doDEEdodo (Twlight Zone). ------------------------------ End of grand-funk-digest V1 #51 *******************************
