But I'd still like to hear it from the boys as to why they stick with this stuff. If they like recording this stuff and performing it then I'll stand by them. But if they're doing it because of some notion that they'll acquire more fans or for money reasons or because the record labels are forcing them or something like this then... Funk in Four Days, Mick - ------------- Original Text From: Jacob Lowe , on 4/21/97 9:49 AM: ok, everyone, for those wondering how a youngster like myself becomes interested in grand funk, here's how it goes. when I was a senior in high school (1993), A friend of mine (john breedlove) and I used to jam together and play old Pink Floyd and stuff like that. Anyway, he once let me here Paranoid, and I was enthralled by Mark's guitar tone, not to mention his voice. Then I heard sin's a good man's brother, and was hooked. He immediately dubbed me a copy of Survival (now my favorite album) and I haven't been the same ever since... jacob :) ------------------------------ From: Ken Blackley Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 09:56:17 -0700 Subject: Detroit - Rock City! With all the talk about what folk hope Grand Funk should and shouldn't play, it suddenly struck me noone has actually said what it is they like, other than references to old and new music. I think it might be a good idea for everyonne to list their top ten GFR tunes, just so we can make sure we're all on the same wavelength. here are mine: (1) Closer to Home (live version especially) (2) In Need (3) Gimme Shelter (4) People, Let's Stop the War (5) Into the Sun (6) Bad Time (7) Anybody's Answer (8) Mr. Limousine Driver (9) TNUC (10)Locomation (Live veriosn ONLY) and Crossfire (tie) Ask me ten minutes from know and this list could change. For instance, Inside Looking Out isn't here, but I'd be dissapointed if I saw the band and they didn't play it. So just in case here it is again. This is my first time writing anything here. I have been reading all the email everday. A BIG hello to all my GFR Brothers & Sisters. I have been a fan since 1970. I own every album they ever put out. Also I have all the solo stuff by Mark. And I even have a copy of Flint. I use to play Paranoid off of the Live Album every morning before I went to school. And that brings me to my top ten favorites. 1. Paranoid off of the Live album 2. Mean Mistreater off of the Live album 3. Hey Mr. Limousine Driver 4. Closer to Home 5. Inside Looking Out 6. TNUC 7. Heartbreaker 8. We're An American Band 9. The Railroad 10. Queen Bee And as some of the others have said it could change any minute. Except for the first 3. I also think that Mark sings When a Man Loves a Woman better than Percy or Bolton. For those of you that don't know what lp that is off of, it is on No Thrills by The Mark Farner band. And his lead work in that song is remarkable. I love ever album they put out. and about all this talk about Loco and SKOW. I think we should just be glad they are back together and doing it again. I am really looking forward to something new from the guys and I cant wait for the video. I think it is great to have this forum to talk about the people's band. I think it was STAATS that wrote the first review of the show. Thanks man! For those of us that could not attend I really apprecitate the report. Lets hope the band stays on track and dont derail. Let this be the year of the Funk. A loyal fan since 1970 Sam p.s. Just thought I'd let you know, Phil ------------------------------ From: "William A. Parrette" Date: Mon, 21 Apr 1997 17:07:06 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Auburn Hills and such ... Hi all, Okay, I just got back from Auburn Hills, MI. It is now Mon Apr 21 15:13:45 EDT 1997, and I have about an hour before I have to attend to some other work. I have 202 messages waiting for me in my "in-box" -- probably, some reviewing the concert already. But, I'm not going to look at them, I'm just going to start typ- ing, and try to get this out as quick as I can. From my home just outside of Cincinnati, it took about 5 hours to make the drive to Troy and the hotel I and the kids were stay- ing at. As I pull into the parking lot, Mike Butler (1kfunkrr) is stepping out of the shuttle van from the airport -- we both arrived at the exact same time. We exchanged hellos, stepped inside to register and he shows me the Funkengruven tee-shirt. The shirts look excellent -- much better than I expected, I hope everyone got their "order" in. After we settle in, Mike popped over to chat for a bit. We sat around and talked about the band, the Web pages, the mailing list, and such and generally had a great time Mike is a great guy and those of you attending the LA show will be able to verify that for yourselves. My first "bad time" was that there were no messages from other Funk fans in the area and no one else stopped by to chat. We called Greg Wereley (WHIRLEGREG) to arrange a meeting place for the next day. Then Mike, the kids, and I drove around a bit and found a place to eat. The next day, we met Greg and some of his "clan" at a "record show." He had several pictures of is Rock 'N Roll Fantasy Camp" excursion that he shared with us -- but, I'll let him share the details with you himself. We went in the show and found some Grand Funk, ... er, uh ... well, let's just say we found some music. Greg probably took the "prize," though, with his purchase of a Loco-Motion single with Destitute and Loosin' on the flip side! And, as a special added bonus, we got to meet "Bill from 'New Jersey'" who happened to be at the show too. We arranged to meet later at The Palace and left with our "prizes." At about 3:00, we made the 15-minute drive up to Auburn Hills, found an open gate went in and parked on the North side as had been talked about elsewhere. Mike, my kids, and I all had our Funkengruven tee-shirts on and immediately started drawing atten- tion. Lots of folks passing by wanted to know where we got them which required a bit of an explanation -- several times. At about 4:00, we started hearing the echos of a sound check. Mike and I went up to the doors and started listening. Shortly thereafter, David Statts (dstaats1) showed up with one of his buddies from Pennsylvania! Introductions, hand shakes, and lots of good Funk chat. As we are in the middle of talking "Crash Test" Chris (HCRRock) shows up with one of his buddies. More in- troductions, more hand shakes, and more good Funk chat. As the sound check ends we wander back towards our cars and Jim (??? ROVERPICK) walks up and joins the crowd. More introductions, more hand shakes, and more good Funk chat. A little later, Big- dog (sorry :-( the name escapes me) and his wife walk up and, you guessed it, more of everything! Everybody gets in on the Funken- gruven deal! The doors opened around 5:30 and we all headed inside. And it was time for my second "bad time." Be prepared folks -- the of- ficial souvenirs are cool (two different kinds of tee-shirts and a ball cap) -- but they are $25,00 a pop! I was picking up some extras for our buddies Jay Siekierski and Jeff Cochran and I had to go to the ATM (there was one inside The Palace!) to get some more fast cash) So I dropped $125.00 for souvenirs right off the bat and headed inside for the show. Once inside, we all had a lot of questions about our Funken- gruven shirts again -- Mike probably could have sold them all if he had had a vendor's license! But then, there were some sur- prises for us!! Jim Caleca (IMTurtle2) has been working behind the scenes all week and came out and told us some of what to ex- pect. Then, Joe Gavlick -- Mark's biographer -- came over and shared a few more concert tidbits with us. Some of the things we learned are that VH-1 does *not* have the video contract yet! VH-1, ABC, NBC, CBS, and others are cur- rently in a bidding war to get the rights to show the concert on the air. There will be a video of the concert made available in the near future *as well as* a video release of the history-mak- ing Shea Stadium concert. Joe told us that his biography should be out and available sometime late summer. He also told us that Mark (not the band) will be putting up a Web site, too. The show was supposed to start at 7:00 but, at 7, the audito- rium was only about half full. As people -- almost literally -- came trickling in, the show got started around 7:30. And, as we were told, this *was* definitely the biggest of the initial three shows! You should have seen the cameras all over the place -- on stage, flying over the audience, back by the sound board. Then there was the laser light show and the pyrotechnics! What a show! I can't wait until this video is available!!!!!! Here's the set list: *Thus Spake Zarathustra (or something like that :-) you know it as the theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey) with the Detroit Symphony conduted by Paul Schaffer. *Are You Ready *Rock 'N Roll Soul *Footstompin' Music *Time Machine with Peter Frampton *A medley of Paranoid, Sin's A Good Man's Brother, Mr. Limousine Driver *Heartbreaker *Aimless Lady with Alto Reed *T.N.U.C. *Inside Looking Out *Shinin' On *The Loco-Motion with Peter Frampton and Alto Reed *We're An American Band Intermission with awards from the Bosnian Ambassador to the U.N. *A medley of GFR hits from the Detroit Symphony including *We're An American Band *The Loco-Motion *Bad Time *Closer To Home *Mean Mistreater The band comes back on stage and finishes the song with the symphony. The symphony plays in the background of most of the following songs *Some Kind Of Wonderful with Alto Reed and the Motor City Horns *To Get Back In with Alto Reed and the Motor City Horns *Closer To Home And, for the encore *Loneliness *Thus Spake Zarathustra As the band leaves the stage Paul Schaffer again directs the Symphony There was a third "bad time" during the show. As the Paranoid medley got under way, I looked down at the chair next to me to check on my souvenir purchase and half of them were gone. I started panicking as I thought about my $125 investment disap- pearing and Mike started looking around. He immediately spotted one of the shirts under the jacket of a guy sitting directly be- hind us. During the show, Mike and a couple of other fans around us started yelling at this guy and looking for security. We got someone's attention and they came over and I got my shirts back. But (it was actually two guys behind us who did it) both of the perpetrators just sat there through the entire concert as if they had done nothing wrong! I'm sorry here folks, but just because they were drunk and stoned is no excuse to steal from your fellow "brothers and sisters" and especially at a concert put on by "the people's band." It took me several songs to get settled down. After the concert was over and the lights were back on, these guys still sat there! Mike and David had a few "words" with them and they still sat there like "what did we do?" Anyway, we all hung around a bit after the show hoping to meet the band. We found where they were holding the after-concert party but didn't have the required passes to get ourselves in. Oh well ... we tried. We all headed back to our cars almost too amazed and bedazzled to talk after having enjoyed the musical event of the century! Well, I gotta go! I got some other things I have to do. It's Mon Apr 21 16:44:58 EDT 1997 and I've been typing much longer than I should. Heck, I've probably put some of you to sleep! So folks, go enjoy the other shows, watch for the train to come rolling through your town, take care, keep Shinin' On, and, as always, grok in fullness ... In no particular order: Are You Ready Born to Die Closer to Home Shinin' On Destitute and Losin Rock n' Roll Soul Anybody's Answer In Need Inside Looking Out Into The Sun Boy only 10 huh? For the first set he wore black pants with red frayed fringes (indian style) on the side of each pant leg. He had a black vest with no shirt underneath (settle down Donna). On both arms he had black strings tied around the upper bicep area (where he used to wear the arm band). With his long hair he looked very indian like and in good shape. But the first set was rapid fire, down your throat, kick-ass, old time Grand Funk at maximum volume. The sound was emense. You didn't just hear the music, it permiated through your body. The songs were so crisp, and they were really tight. The boys knew they were on tape. Not just to Locomotion or WAAB, but TNUC and Inside Looking Out. The Charlie Daniel red neck jerk who tried to rip our shirts off is something I hope you guys don't have to put up with at the other shows. I told him what I thought of his actions after the show, I really wanted to pop him, but he wouldn't get up (or couldn't), Staats, who's a big dude (and a cop) wanted a piece of him too, the guy was just a BIG loser. > >Well guys, hope this wets your appetite.
