I just had a conversation with a guy in the lab while I was duping my 100th (exaggerating) GMA video. He said, "Grand Funk? Didn't they become a joke or a goof band in the mid-seventies? People were making fun of them, DJs, you know? They were great in the late sixties--early seventies, but they sold out." I just tried to justify it and what does he see on the monitor? Farner jumping around to Some Kinda W. He says, "See that's what I'm talking about. That's not how I remember Grand Funk!" He walked away shaking his head. How do you cover for that? You don't. I once had an 8-track tape by Grand Funk (or so it said) that was entitled "Funk Off Vol. 1". It most assuredly was not an official release of any kind, because it had "bootleg" written all over it (not literally, but you know what I mean). Well, it stunk, soundwise, so I got rid of it many years ago. But I seem to recall it had pre-OnTime sounding stuff, like TKandthePack-sounding material. But it really didn't sound much like GRF, so I always wondered if it was really some crappy no-names that were recorded and sold illegally as being by "grand funk". This does happen on ocassion, as you probably know - for instance, the Alice Cooper 1969 bootlegs (there are many titles, like "Freak Out" or "Ladies Man", etc.) have a few tunes that were not Alice and band. Anyway, just a curiosity - did anyone else here have or know about "Funk Off Vol. 1"? He called them "the great white loud noise". Haha. What depth of insight, what piercing analysis, eh? Haha. Anyway, the reason I bring this up is because of the recent discussions we have been having regarding GFR's drifting into pop/bubblegum/whatever in the mid-to-late 70s. Well, I was definitely one of you who despaired over the likes of "Loco" and "SKOW", etc., but let me say one thing: compared to MAJOR sell-out-artists like Rod Stewart, Elton John, Stevie Winwood, Bowie, etc., GFR doesn't even come close! Yeah, Rod, Elton, Stevie and others like them sold/sell out large venues and appeal to a broad base of listeners - hell, my 60-year-old mother likes these bone-heads, and has seen each of them in concert and has bought their more recent albums! Haha. And the funny thing is, she would never listen past a few minutes of any of these guys' early 70s music! Talk about selling out - these guys look like Neil Diamond on stage these days, with their pricey suits and such. And Elton is writing music for Disney, etc. Haha. Sorry if I have offended any of your fans of the aforementioned light-weights (oops, there I went again..), but I always hated Stewart for that remark in the early 70s, and despite his millions of adoring fans, his millions of dollars, his stunningly beautiful wife, his.....uhh, maybe Rod DOES know what he is doing.....hell, he is still a dork. My name is Mauro Colace, aged 38, from Genova (Genoa in english) Italy. I'll attend the Beacon show and hope to succeed in being present at the West Side Brewery meeting. I'm not an Internet traveller: just sometimes I can count on help from my friend Andrea, who keeps me informed about Funk news. I never saw GFR together and since, as of Feb. 26, it seemed the tour would not include Europe, I immediately placed the orders for flight and concert ticket: so I'll be in NYC from apr. 23 to 27. I took the chance to meet Mark on sep. 24 1994 in Adrian MI; I was spending a short vacation in Ann Arbor MI, guest to an old friend of mine, working at the University of Michigan, when I found on a paper a piece of news about Mark's show at the Jawson Auditorium. I could meet Mark and his family before and after the show. Mark played and sang alone on basic tracks, performing his christian programme (the only Funk tune was an acoustic flash of "Closer to Home"), and talked at great length about his life and his christian choice. Now a few words about me, just to tell you that I strum guitar since '72 and I had for several years a trio (now it's broken up, but I hope to rebuild it) called "Movin' Thing" (an idea I took from "Got This Thing on the Move"), playin' only Grand Funk songs. I read about a lot of bootlegs and videotapes by GFR: I haven't any of them, except a 1974 video (probably shooted at LA Forum), so if anybody lets me know about the way to have anything, I would be very grateful. I think Bad Time is Mark's best top 40--type song. It's just that it kinda broke the "Grand Funk mold" of driving, three piece, kick-ass, R&B,...music I loved so much. Dear Grand Funk Fans, I just got home from the airport. I'm sorry I don't know how to explain this very well. But the show was the GREATEST show I ever saw. I really don't know where to begin! They videotaped the show and plan to release the videotape and a CD of the show. It looked like a sell out and the crowd went CRAZY! One thing that I was suprized at was that everybody knew the words to all the songs ex. everyone sang the whole song to inside looking out. They had large videoscreens that showed rare video tape of Were an american band and the 71 cincy show and a very rare clip, that I never saw before of the 70 N.Y. Shea stadium Show. Rumor has it that they are going to release the shea stadium show as well!!!!! As far as the songs they played all the big hits stuff that they always play but they also played "To get Back In" and "Loneliness" The show had no opening act and was in two parts. First was just the "old" GFR and the hard stuff. the second act was with the orchestra and it was great. They had fireworks inside the arena going off about 3 or 4 different times. Peter Framton and Lou Reed and Paul Shaffer were the guests. Also had a Large american flag come down behind Don on Were an American Band. I'm sorry I'm still numb by this event I'm in a daze. It simply was the BEST thing I ever saw. You Funk Fans going to the NY show and LA show GET READY and hold on tight. Again I'm lost for words please e-mail me if I can answer and ?'s. More reports will be coming from the other guys later today I'm sure. Anyway, he once let me here Paranoid, and I was enthralled by Mark's guitar tone, not to mention his voice. Then I heard sin's a good man's brother, and was hooked. Similar to #1: Sleeve lists TNUC as 9:13; in reality it's only 4:40. What happened? Are there two versions of the album? A typo in the sleeve notes? They butchered CITA to fit it all on one CD! Actually, the version that's out now is better than the original release, if you can believe that. But yeah, They cut out the whole intro of the boys in the dressing room, the butchered Brewer's solo (TNUC) and cut out various other parts throughout. I noticed that someone ended a message with "Grand Funk in the 20th century", well, How about "Rocking into the 21st century and beyond!!!" I cannot wait until the Vegas Show. I was telling a friend at work about the 97 tour etc. He was all excited until I mentioned the possibility that Ted Nugent might be touring with the "boys". He immediately was turned off to the Wild Man From Detroit. Keep in mind that this is the same guy who gets goosebumps over Chicago, so he'll count as one of the Top 40 types. I hope the band won't stoop to the Marketing types and pair up with Donny Osmond, etc. This world has been screwed up enough by these Marketing prima donnas. GFR made their name by standing up to what was WRONG with the world. That's what made them "the peoples band" during roughly 1969 to 1972. As I said in a letter I sent to Mark some time ago, our children have no one to grab them and shake them and make them understand that they can make the world a better place if they get off their butts, stop bellyaching and make something happen. They have no clue what its like to go up against the State Police and the National Guard. We would still be in Viet Nam if some of us hadn't had something to say and the backbone to act on it. For instance, Inside Looking Out isn't here, but I'd be dissapointed if I saw the band and they didn't play it. And The Railroad isn't here . . . or Are you Ready? . . . nor American Band not . . . sheesh. How about a top 100?
