As a guitar player, I agree totally. Anybody with fast fingers and good manual dexterity can play like Steve Vai, but it takes talent and soul to play the guitar with FEELING. I think this is a real issue that so many critics miss. I've never been real big on guitar players who stand their and "shoot their wad" (excuse my expression) just to show off. But, you take a guitar player like Mark, who uses the guitar to "sing" the song, now that's impressive and rare! Those of us that heard Heartbreaker and Closer to Home on the radio and then got into all of the early stuff will always be biased toward it. Are You Ready and Mark says Alright from LIVE ALBUM are pure classic GFR. Of course, I was disappointed with the post-Knight stuff to begin with, but you have to recognize the talent of the boys to sell millions of hard rock albums and then get #1 singles with American Band and Locomotion. Despite the post-Knight producers like Rundgren who toyed around doing their thing, MD&M still rocked live. The Caught in the Act versions of Shinin'On and Locomotion are much better than the studio cuts. And on that same LP, Black Licorice is great. I worked on the 11th floor of a building in 1978 and on 3rd shift my buddy and I cranked up Caught... and had the security guards on the 1st floor rocking to Black Licorice. I'd rather have People Let's Stop the War and Upsetter than Some Kind of Wonderful any day, but I'm with Donna on the importance of the mid-70's stuff to prolonging their career. It's not easy to do, and says a lot for them. And their Top Forty stuff is good pop music. Now, I like most of their pop stuff to an extent (and really like Bad Time), the exception being Some Kind of Wonderful and the studio version of Locomation, but it ain't Inside Looking Out. As one of the early Grand Funk fans, it is my conjecture that the band's decision to create top forty hits was not what killed interest in the band. It was the blatant change of musical style that the top forty hits represented that killed the band. For me personally, it was "Locomotion" and "Some Kind of Wonderful" that turned me off in the 70's. "We're An American Band" was okay, but the album had some holes. The subsequent Top 40 hits put more holes in my Grand Funk "ship." "We're An American Band" was a cool Top 40 hit that was consistent with the band's past. Moreover, I thought "We're An American Band" was a step up musicially for the band. When The Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, etc. had Top 40 hits, it didn't turn off their fans. While I agree with Donna that "hits" might have provided the corporate fuel to keep the band going, "corporate" says it all. They sold out! Grand Funk was anti-establishment and counter-culture. All of the sudden, they wanted to be mainstream, and sounded mainstream -- not the Grand Funk we had come to know and love. History shows us that the band's career nose-dived after they lost their older fans, and the fickle Top 40 crowd desereted GFR for the Bay City Rollers, or whoever was pumping-out the corporate Top 40 hits...which might have been fun to listen to at the time, but didn't create the core fans that "Satisfaction" "Pinball Wizard" "Help" and "We're An American Band" did. In 1971, I had an intense argument with one of my uncles that GFR would always be one of my favorite bands...forever. After "Locomotion" my allegiance was greatly diminished and permanently damaged. Let's face it, "Locomotion" and "Some Kind of Wonderful" are not what the band's legacy is built on. And thank God Mark Farner didn't write those songs. "Bad Time" stands the test of time, which he did write. What if Bruce Springsteen started releasing bubblegum, Top Forty hits written by other artists? What would happen to his core fans? I'm all for musicians taking chances. They shouldn't be slaves to their fans and the fans' expectations. But come on, can anyone seriously defend the direction that GFR took with "Locomotion" and "Some Kind of Wonderful?" They weren't taking any risks musically. They weren't making any great social statements. They were starting to sound like The Osmonds and The Patridge Family. I like the band. I'm not bashing them. But some perspective about what happened and why we haven't heard from them in 20 years is necessary. The band became schizophrenic at best, and something all together different at worst. If they had returned to their roots in the late 70s and continued to tour, they might have made it. But as we all know, there were other circumstances such as marriages, personalitites, personal value changes, etc. that put pressure on the band to break up. Maybe the band had run out of things to say. The millions of fans that had initially supported them were not supporting them. Their fan base had changed and diminished. GFR will reemerge like a Phoenix and stay around only if the old pre-"Locomotion" fans support them. If the reunion is to be truely successful, Grand Funk will have to create new music like "Closer to Home/I"m Your Captain and "We're An American Band." Hi folks, I just checked my favorite on-line CD source (CDC) and they list two entries for "Survival" - one is an Japanese import (EMD3181) for $23 and the other is Alliance 94202 for $10.65. What the hell is that one? Anyone know who "Alliance" is? BTW, they also had "On Time" (Japanese import EMD6037) for $23 and "Live Album" (import) for $23. Plus the others we all know about. Later, Jeff ------------------------------ From: JAYPFUNK@aol.com Date: Sun, 20 Apr 1997 14:08:15 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Survival and other C.D. Confusion Everyone, Yes, my copy of Survival is also a U.S. domestic version on Capitol. Catalog # 94202. It has the original brown back cover with the note from T.K. But the booklet is really chessy it does not fold out and the 3 pictures are not included at all, the back of it is just black with the catalog # at the bottom. The C.D. itself is cool looking, it has the original GREEN Capitol style label on it. Also, the remix is GREAT, this C.D. sounds just as good as the L.P. I am not a real big fan of C.D.'s so I usually compare L.P's to C.D.'s. The newer U.S. versions of E Pluribus & WAAB also have great packaging and sound. I have the Japan versions of these and the U.S. are much better. And we all know the story with the 2 U.S. versions of Caught... the newer U.S. version of Closer to Home has the great photo in the booklet the back cover art and the green Capitol cd label BUTTTTT... the REMIX IS HORRIBLE!!!!! If you have this version, compare it to the sound on your original vinyl and you will throw your C.D. out a window! The L.P. is so much better. I also have the cheesy Canadian CEMA Special products version of CTH. This is even worse!! Stay away from these versions. The version of Live Album that I have is an import from Holland, great sound, O.K. artwork, the booklet folds out but the picture is not there, just the song titles. I hope this will clear some things up about the C.D. stuff. See everybody in NY on Friday. I have Orch. Row DD(4th row center!) seats 113 and 114. Also will be going to the Amsterdam Bar for the Pre-show meeting. MARK, DON and MEL Rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jay ------------------------------ From: "G. Jeffrey Gower" Date: Sun, 20 Apr 1997 14:05:14 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Follow up... Hi again folks, I also checked German Music Express, and they have the "On Time" and "Live Album" for only $17 apiece. Just FYI... I hear ya! But, there are some really (really) good tunes on BTD and ATGITWB. There is definately some "basic" Funk going on there (somewhere). Like I said, I listen to "Sally" (a bubblegummer you haven't heard yet) and just pace myself through the three minutes or so until the next song comes on. The other songs on the album are worth the pain. Let's get the word to the boys themselves. We're all thinking the same thing! Maybe we could send these comments to the fan club at: qbert50@aol.com Comon Mark, The Locomotion ain't GFR's roots!!! What do you think? I really got disillusioned around that time, so much so that I've never heard the BTD or ATGITWB albums. At that time I felt GFR took a turn for the worse and went 'main stream emulation mode'. I tried to get back in (a song there somewhere...) with GSGP, but WHERE WAS THE BASS? Zappa really zap-pahed GFR on that one. I really would like to know what was going through Mark's mind to let Frank play lead. Then, again, maybe not...too scary. Needless to say, my fav GFRs cuts are those that I don't need to adjust the bass-boost or 'loud' button, you know, the old original songs like Inside Looking Out, Footstompin', etc. Ya know, some groups rock it out, others wimp it out. I hope, along with you, that this second coming of GFR will rock it out again. The following was included as an attachement. Please use UUDECODE to retrieve it.
