I got Survival from www.cduniverse.com. You can also find it at www.cdnow.com, but they're a few dollars more; the only reason you might want to use them is that they accept AmEx while CDUniverse accepts Visa and MC only. It's an import, so it's $22.93; add $2.99 shipping & handling and the total comes to $25.92. I ordered last Saturday and received it this Saturday - not a bad turnaround for mail order. I'm listening to "All You've Got Is Money" as I type this; pretty relevant with Tax Day tomorrow (those of you who got refunds this year - I don't want to hear about it! The rest of you I'm sure can identify...) "All they want is all your money. All they're after is your money. .... is your money. All they want is, All your money. My Michigan Mom (Mich Ma for short) just sent me an article on the one and only Funk. The article entitled "still the same old Funk" appeared in the Friday 3/28/97 edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle. (It just so happens that my Mich Ma lives in Traverse City.) There are some great color photos of the band. A big shot of Farner good singin' and good playin' from the waste up. A wide shot of the band and a small shot of Don & Mel (like that rims mounted white set Donnie, and notice the double mounted toms-just like my set, Hey Donnie: Do you give lessons?). These are great shots of them rehearsing in the State Theatre in Traverse City. The article talks about the shows, the cause all of the stuff we've known about for months. Much to my surprise the article even discusses stuff that even Phil doesn't know like: Farner lives in Petosky (knew that); Mel lives in the Traverse Tity area (I didn't know that and I was just up there this past July and nope, I didn't get any); Mel says they burned out working real hard with 2 albums and 2 tours per year & they wanted a life so they stopped; after the Seger thing Donnie turned in his sticks (thank God he picked them up again); Donnie then did law school before deciding it wasn't right for him and when Donnie's ex-wife died he became a full-time single parent; Donnie then retired to raise his daughter; before Farner moved north in '76 he had threats and people weirding out (must have been the Charlie Daniels red neck @*&% fans - this is a reference to the Farner solo concert I went to with the Cat Bro's & the L.I. Boys where Farner opened up and left the stage after he was hit with a bottle by those Charlie Daniels homo hillbillies); here's a quote from the article: 20 yrs. of technological advances have enabled them to improve their sound, but as Farner says, "Grand Funk is Grand Funk" (YES!); Donnie had a skiing accident that put his left foot (hi-hat) in a cast for a time; Mark has a scar on his neck that was from the 2 disks he had removed; the doc told Farner to play a lighter instrument so Mark went with a 5 lb. Parker Fly which can sound like a Strat or a Tele says Mark. The article gives you the impression that the band is PUMPED for this tour. They are especially excited about performing with an orchestra (gimme some Loneliness & Shelter too). There are a number of quotes from Mel too. Bottom line - great article. Stephen, the best 45 you can get, in my opinion, is the Shinin On or Locomotion 45 which has on the flip side a song not available on any other GF LP. Its called Destitute And Losin. It took me a few listens when it first came out in 74 to get into it, but I recorded my Shinin On LP onto a cassette and put Destitute & Losin after the last song, Little Johnny Hooker. Man, the song will blow you away after you get to know it. And let me suggest that if you get it and record it, adjust the volume at the end as it fades out so that it will play back without fading. The end of that song is too good to fade out on. I highly recommend this rare tune. ------------------------------ From: TLLH@aol.com Date: Tue, 15 Apr 1997 08:08:16 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Re: Unsubscribe Unsubscribe , TLLH@AOL.COM ------------------------------ From: "Michael Catalano" Date: Tue, 15 Apr 97 6:22:33 EDT Subject: re: GFR Article Yo Fred! She's always wanted to go to Vegas (never been - I've been 3-4 times, but it's been awhile), but I never seriously considered going because I've already got all my vacation time for this year laid out. Well, as she reminded me last night, we'll be on vacation the last week of June/first week of July and will be in Tulsa (where we can drop the kids off with the grandparents) and so that would be a great time to head your way. So... I just got off the phone with Ticketmaster - I've got seats in Tier 2, row JJ, seats 8-10. Do you know what Tier 2 is? Almost sounds like a balcony, but the Ticketmaster lady said they were floor seats. Whatever, I can't imagine a bad seat in a place that only holds 1400. Bottom line - I'm THERE dude! I'd appreciate it if you would keep a watch out for me for any room specials that might show up between now and then. With the fight that weekend, I'm thinking prices might be inflated? My BIG regret at this point is that I didn't think of this sooner! I could've been resting my elbows on the stage with Jim! I noticed that Mel kept his shades on during the entire show. People usually show signs of aging around their eyes (I know I do). So maybe Mel did his "agelessness" magic with just a pair of shades. When they're all standing on stage near the end of the show there's a shot from Mel's right. Peak behind the glasses and look for those crows feet. The room rates here go way up on the weekends. I called the Hard Rock, all of their rooms are booked for Fri & Sat. So much for rubbing elbows with the boys in the coffee shop! Check out a site that does reservations http://www.lasvegashotel.com/rates.htm for some price ranges. We've got some inflatible air mattresses if anyone wants to crash at my house. It would be great if they filmed the show. VH-1 is doing some shows in conjunction with the Hard Rock. Since I never quite figured out what to do with them, since I didn't have time to compare his lyrics to those I have posted, since I had a million other things to do that seemed to take up most of my time, I just let them sit. But, tablatures have always been in my site plan. What I wanted to do was include a link off of the lyric page to the tab- lature page for each song. But, what's a poor drummer to do? :-( > ...
