Hey, is anyone familiar with the Good Morning America (GMA) format? I happened to get up early this morning so I figured I'd check it out so there were no surprises when I do the real deal tomorrow morning. By the way, I live in Colorado Springs which is MST, 2 hours behind EST. So, the local tv guide says GMA at 6:30. So I turn on ABC at 6:30 and Good Morning Colorado is on for the rist 1/2 hour! All local bullshit! So do all you east coasters get Good Morning Colorado back there? :-) I'll bet you guys get something like "Good Fucking Morning New York!" :-) Then the real GMA came on at 7:00. So now I know not to even worry about it until 7:00. Then from 7:00 - 8:15 (when I left for work) they had about 4 different subjects on. Now, the next question is this...is it live or is it memorex? Is this thing taped? I would assume that it is but could be wrong, never assume! The manager said between 8:30-9:00 a.m. EST which would be 6:30-7:00 MST which around here is the JonBenet Ramsey case, the missing fighter jet, the video taping of the cops kicking some kid who just rammed a police car, the proposed new Broncos stadium, blah, blah, blah...who gives a shit! I want Grand Funk! So, if anyone could enlighten me on how this show usually goes I'd appreciate it. That probably cut down on the amount of fuck-ups while I'm taping it. I thought you might be interested in this upcoming AOL event. The text below can be found inside the What's Hot page. Bye, MusicMail 04/17 Rock Band Grand Funk Railroad 9:00pm ET (AOL Live) Grand Funk Railroad, one of the most popular, influential bands of the late sixties and early seventies -- and the only band in history to sell-out Shea Stadium faster than The Beatles -- is back on track, launching their 1997 world tour with a three-city concert event to benefit the Bosnian Relief Fund. The benefit concert kicks off in the band's hometown of Detroit on April 20 at The Palace of Auburn Hills, followed by New York's Beacon Theatre on April 26 and the final performance on May 2 at The Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. For the first time in 20 years, the original band, guitarist/vocalist Mark Farner, drummer/vocalist Don Brewer and bassist Mel Schacher reunite and go full steam ahead, bringing the best of Grand Funk Railroad cross-country in an effort to provide awareness and aid for war orphans in Bosnia-Herzegovina. All profits from all three events will be donated to the Bosnian Relief Fund. In commemoration of their generous contribution, United Nations Ambassador Mohammed Sacirbey will present the band with a special award during intermission at the Detroit benefit. The Detroit concert will also be recorded for release as a LIVE album and filmed for an upcoming TV special. Grand Funk will perform mega-hits such as "We're an American Band," "I'm Your Captain," "Locomotion" and "Some Kind of Wonderful" with a 40-piece orchestra featuring members of the Sarajevo Symphony, along with special musical guests soon to be announced. A four-piece horn section led by Alto Reed from Bob Seger's Silver Bullet Band will also accompany the power trio of Farner, Brewer and Schacher. Having recently signed on with the management company David Fishof Presents, the band has plans to tour Japan and Europe in June and July before returning to the United States for a tour this summer. The group also plans to record new songs with producer Ron Navison. Grand Funk departs for Sarajevo for a benefit performance on September 19th. The Bosnian-American Relief Fund is a charitable organization that was established to alleviate the suffering of victims of the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina by providing medical supplies, food and clothing. The organization is one of very few in North America that has been successful in providing aid to children left orphaned and homeless. Tickets are presently on sale in all three cities. The Rolling Stone Album Guide offers the following description of Grand Funk Railroad: "At its sweat-dripping best, the band emits a surging, elemental blast of hard-rock heat." Well, rock fans everywhere will be thrilled to learn they can once again warm themselves in front of the fire... The top-selling American rock group has newly reformed -- stoked by the much-awaited re-issue of the group's catalogue on CD by Capitol Records, as well as the overwhelming response to a handful of reunion performances played last year to more than 200,000 fans. Generally acknowledged as one of the precursors to heavy metal, Grand Funk led the track work for such bands as Foreigner, Journey, Van Halen and Bon Jovi with its signature hard-driving sound -- a combination of soulful vocals, muscular instrumentation and forceful pop melodies. The fact that GFR's legacy still looms large over the pop music landscape more than a decade after its disbandment is also a testament to the group's influence and staying power. Their mega-hits still enjoy considerable airplay today, and neo-country mavericks, The Jayhawks, recently interpreted GFR's hit song "Bad Times" on their record "Tomorrow the Green Grass." Legend even has it that Prince named his first band Grand Central as a nod to Grand Funk. Internationally acclaimed, GFR completed four world tours during the band's heyday -- selling out in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Japan and South America. (The 1971 performance at New York's Shea Stadium sold out faster than The Beatles.) The group's widespread appeal is also evident in its considerable recording achievements. In their career as a band, Grand Funk has had 19 charted singles, eight Top 40 hits, and two #1 million-selling singles ("Locomotion" and "We're an American Band"). On top of that, the group has 12 gold and 10 platinum albums, with record sales in excess of 14 million copies worldwide. With GFR reforming in 1997, the final chapter of the band's biography remains to be written. One thing is certain however -- with the announcement of the group's plans to tour the country, both seasoned GFR lovers and contemporary rock fans discovering the group for the first time on the digitally remastered CD's, will be able to see and hear first-hand that Grand Funk Railroad's train is back on track again -- cannonballing toward glory -- and a city near you! Bob, As a loyal listener of WBAB for 20 years I am wondering why the up coming Grand Funk Railroad Concert at the Beacon theatre on 25APR97 is not being mentioned on your show. GFR has been my favorite group since '72. I think that after 20 years since the group broke up the reunion of this mega--band is certainly worth mentioning. If you think that the Railroad has derailed, just look at any of the four (yes 4) websites dedicated solely to Grand Funk: http://www.anaserve.com/~cochran/contents.htm http://www.cybergate.com/~donna/music/grand.html http://w3.one.net/~wap/grandFunk.html http://www.cs.uit.no/Music/View/grand+funk+railroad/ We also have an email chat--line at The Beacon show sold out in just one day! If you remeber, GFR was the band that sold out Shea, in '71, faster than Beatles! You classify your station as "Classic Rock". If Grand Funk isn't "Classic" American rock-n-roll, then what is? It is truly a shame that you only play about four or five of their songs (but that's really not the issue here.) GFR plans to tour the U.S. during the latter part of the summer this year (after they do Europe and Japan). My question to you is: How can we get these guys to play Jones Beach? If you, WBAB, can't do anything to make this happen, is there anything I can do? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Listen to you every morning! Well folks, I just got back from watching the full 2 hours of Good Morning America just to tape about 10 minutes of Grand Funk! The hour and fifty minutes was painful but the 10 minutes was splendid! I'm not writing to ruin anything for anybody, I just wanted to give you guys a heads up about the format of the show. So for those of you who just taped the full 2 hours while at work or something I'll try to save you some time in searching for the boys. This is the format I saw here in Colorado. GMA is on from 7:00 - 9:00. The first 1/2 hour there wasn't even a word mentioned about GFR. Then at about 7:30 there was about a 1 minute clip of the boys. Then I believe they came back at about 7:45-7:50 for another few minutes and then again at about 8:45 for another 2 clips interrupted by commercials in the middle. They also close out the show too, like the last minute or so so don't turn off the tape before that. Hope my memory isn't too bad on the time lines and I hope this helps a little. It was great to see them! They looked very happy! And, it literally brought a tear to my eye! I just want to mention one thing that Farner said and I'm sure it's not a direct quote but it'll be close. They were talking about when they disbanded in '76 and he said something like they didn't want to bow on their knees to the disco gods! I thought that was great! I taped the whole thing without commercials but of course my VCR has a little glitch in it. I just can't win! Something must be wrong with the audio head... it's not too bad but the sound won't be crystal clear. I rewound it and played it over just to make sure it wasn't hosed up. And it's not hosed, you can just hear some crackling in the sound sometimes. Other than that it's fine. Total playing time is a little over 10 minutes, I believe. But if it's just about money, nd you;re miserable . . . well it won't work in the long run. But they looked happy, and they looked like they are getting along. And having those two things going is what will hopefully keep the reunion rolling! I just want to mention one thing that Farner said and I'm sure > it's not a direct quote but it'll be close. They were talking about when they disbanded in '76 and he said something like they didn't want to bow on their knees to the disco gods! I thought that was great! >THE high point! I'll remember that quote for a long, long time! Good for Mark! By the way, how can you poor Americans sit through insipid tripe like Good Morning America? It made our Canadian good morning-style programs look almost artistic! So I set the VCR and left. I took along my CD player and headphones and listened to 'Caught in the Act' while I was having the shit drilled out of my teeth. Who needs Novocain when your listening to Grand Funk ;-) Especially knowing when I got out - I'd be able to see the guys on tape. Two hours later . . . Ouch . . . There they were! They truly sounded awesome. I thought Don had changed the most, probably because of the hair, the eyes were the same though. They all seemed like they had that gleam in their eye. Mel struck me as being so jovial. I've always thought of him as the silent type. 9 days and 5 hours until Detroit!!!!!!!!!!!! The train has left the station. - -=Mike=- ------------------------------ From: Bugsy41157@aol.com Date: Fri, 11 Apr 1997 16:17:37 -0400 (EDT) Subject: GMA Copies Mick & Stan, Thanks for the VCR copy offer. Hope I'm > wrong and there is a tape somewhere. You know Bugsy, you just reminded me of something that I haven't even thought about in about 20 years. Me and a couple of my Grand Funk buddies (I don't even remember Mick being there?) saw in the Newsday (on Long Island) TV Guide that Grand Funk was going to be on some show. I don't even know what show it was but it was in the afternoon like around 4:30 or something like that. And this was back in about '75-'76 timeframe. Well we got all psyched up, anticipated the whole week, sat down to watch it and NOTHING! Not even a mention of GFR. Like I said, I can't even remember what the show was so I don't even know what came on instead? Talk about a major downer! Yes indeed! Maybe I could blame that incident on my alcoholism and drug addiction! :-) So, I can relate bud, or is that bug? See ya on the west side! That was the first I had seen of Grand Funk and it really set the hook. I've been a die-hard Funk fan ever since. I'm sure all of us would like to have a videocassette of that show, but doesn't seem to be available. Has anybody heard anything else out of the King Biscuit people about a possible release on some early GFR live stuff on CD?
