Boy do I get your drift! We've got exactly the same problem here. It amazes me to think how much great music they've got locked up and won't play while they burn the pits off the CDs on just a select few tracks. > I'd love to find a local station with the balls to say no to play > lists and tell the advertisers to butt out. > I'm wondering if any other folks on the list feel the same way? I couldn't agree more. I think the trouble started when this type of music became "Classic" and a lot of its listeners moved into the 35-44 age group. The business types saw green and got involved at that point and the Classic Rock format became a commodity. It's so much of a commodity that they actually have the different stations playing identical playlists throughout the country (anybody have an Arrow xx.x FM? I've heard that same station in at least 3 different cities and they all play _exactly_ the same songs.) Of course, with the emphasis more on making money now, they don't want to take any chances with any lesser knowns - which explains why we hear the same shit again and again and again... My prediction on Classic Rock's radio future is that sadly, it won't get better until it gets much worse. I think that eventually most people will get tired of hearing Brown Sugar for the quadrillionth time and the format will get retired; then, it'll be up to the next generation to "rediscover" the old stuff and make it popular on the underground before we get to hear any of the _real_ classics on the airwaves. Even now, our local college station plays Black Sabbath and the like from the '70s every once in a while... I took action on this a few weeks ago and called the Classic station KZPS 92.5 here in Dallas, made them aware of GFR's reunion activities (which, I take, astonished them from the DJs reaction) and pointed him to the 'net. William A. Parrette, UNIX guru at large, took this radio contact idea and applied it nationwide, contacting many other radio stations and making them aware, too. My hat's off to you Bill: this was an absolute fantasic idea, and someday I would like the opportunity to meet you eye-to-eye and shake your hand. A request like this from Mr. Fishof would have been tied with money (probably), seein's it's from corporate America, as it were. But to come from a LISTENER, the customer's always right, yah know. What a brilliant idea, using and 'abusing' radio stations to get the word out! I love it. By the way, Dallas is cursed with an Arrow station. The information I found indicated that your format includes rock 'n roll -- current, classic, and/or oldies. The reason for this e-note is to let you know (if you hadn't heard already) that one of the best and most influential rock 'n roll bands of the late 60s and 70s has reformed: Grand Funk Railroad. Now, I am not affiliated with the band in any way but I do have a set of pages on the World Wide Web dedicated to this powerful trio from Flint, MI at: http://w3.one.net/~wap/GFR_WEB/ If you stop by my site, you can read a little about the band's history, their music, and the reunion efforts. Currently, David Fishof Presents, Inc. -- the band's management -- has organized three huge concert events in Auburn Hills (near Detroit), New York City, and Los Angeles to benefit the Bosnian- American relief fund. The New York show sold out in one day, LA is close to selling out, while Auburn Hills is starting to pack the 14,000 seat Palace. Rumor has it that, at the Auburn Hills concert, the band will be recording video for both TV and home- video release *and* will be recording their next live album as well. After these three benefit concerts, QBQ Entertainment -- the band's booking agency -- is putting together some tour dates in Europe, Japan, and the United States. If the e-mail I receive on an almost daily basis from Grand Funk fans around the world is any indication, there are probably hundreds of fans still craving to hear some of that great Rock 'N Roll Soul from *the* American Band in and around Athens, AL. I could probably talk forever about this topic (and I have on my Web site! ;-) ), so let me cut this short and wind up by saying that I hope you'll stop by my Grand Funk pages and re-live some of the greatest, and most imitated, American rock 'n roll of the 70s and perhaps give some consideration to programming some more Grand Funk music for the fans on WKAC in Athens, AL. Thank you, take care, and keep Shinin' On! Bill-- ...who has heard that the modem Jimi Hendrix used was a purple Hayes. Kevin West News Director ------------------------------ From: Phil Catalano Date: Mon, 7 Apr 1997 10:23:28 -0600 (MDT) Subject: Here's A Good Rumor Here's a great rumor to start. And I do think it's a "rumor". Let me explain. Last night we had our once-a-month jam session at my friend Bob's house. After it was over there was about 7 of us left sitting around drinking beer and shootin' the shit. So I told these guys I was flying all over the country to see Grand Funk. So the guy next to me says "Yeah, Mark Farner's living up in Denver now, I heard that on the radio the other day". (We live in Colorado Springs). So of course I said I don't think so, I'm pretty sure he's still up in the Flint area. I explained the whole internet and mailing list and websites to him. So he says "well that's what the Mark Brothers said the other day". The Mark Brothers run the morning show on the local Classic Rock station here in Colorado Springs, 98.1 KKFM. So now I'm totally baffled and I couldn't get this statement off of my mind. I'm thinking there's no way that this could be true. So then when I got home it hit me. Last Tuesday was April 1, you know April Fool's day. And these guys (Mark Bros) are always pulling some serious jokes on April Fool's day. They got me a couple of times. They're actually pretty good at it. So anyway, I'm thinking that this was the day he heard that and they were just jerkin' around? Of course this statement could be totally true too but I just don't think so. Why don't you guys with your connections confirm this for me. I was gonna write the Mark Bros and ask them if this was one of their April Fool's jokes. Gotta admit it was a good one! Also gotta admit that I can't stomache the station anymore cause of all the stuff we've been talking about with Classic Rock stations! So that's why I didn't hear it. On another note. I asked this guy "So, are you a Funk fan?" and he says Oh, Yeah, big time! and so is my buddy Mike here. Mike is the guy I invited to the jam that sits right near me at work...Duh!!! So needless to say, these guys were clueless about the GFR reunion and the upcoming shows! So of course they asked me if they were coming around here. And I told them if they do it'd probably be towards the end of the summer. Shit, if Mark Farner's living right in our backyard now they gotta play around here, right? Speaking of them playing in Colorado, I don't know how many of you are familiar with the venue named "Red Rocks". It's right outside of Denver and it's built right into the mountains and all of the rock that it's built into is that red-colored rock (don't know the name of the rock). But it's really an awesome place. It's outdoors and the acoustics (the rocks) are all natural. The only thing that sucks is that it is outdoors and these wild thunderstorms blow through there sometimes during the shows. That happened when I saw ZZ Top there and also at a Big Head Todd show. Other than that, it's awesome! Grand Funk would be great there! Rumor Control, Phil PS I gotta go post this rumor over on Donna's "Rumors and Gossip" site. See what kind of response we get.
