Yeah, it's pretty much the same wherever I go. Although they do play a decent share of them here in Colorado. The songs they play are American Band, Closer To Home, Some Kind Of Wonderful, The Locomotion, Rock and Roll Soul, Walk Like A Man, and Footstompin' Music. And actually a few years ago THE ONLY Classic Rock station in Colorado Springs, KKFM, was using "Can You Do It" for their Friday morning show. They did some wacky stuff on Friday mornings (and every other day too) but that's the song they were using for a few months. It was pretty cool. But I wanna hear Upsetter, I Come Tumblin', Time Machine, Creepin', Black Licorice, Flight Of The Phoenix, Shinin' On, Little Johnny Hooker, etc, etc! But I just don't think it's gonna happen! I don't think I've ever heard Winter And My Soul on the radio. That's great that they played that. I have heard Heartbreaker and Inside Lookin' Out thought. And that was back in NY in the early 80s. I was in my van in the parking lot at Suffolk Community College when they played those two. I almost died of a heart attack. Needless to say, I was late for my next class! Row P all the way!!!!!!! Fifteen days and counting! > ... If you haven't already done so, I think you should > forward all of this stuff to Fishof and Co ... I have e-mailed Fishof with some of the things that I found on the Web. I was hoping that this might give him some more ideas for promoting the band. I don't know about you folks but I'm starting to believe that the only two radio stations that are promoting anything are Sunny Quinn's station and the one co-spon- soring the Auburn Hills show. I have not been forwarding the individual responses ... maybe I should. We absolutely have to help get the word out! ... or the re- union is going to be very short lived! BTW, I thought the reply from Sunny Quinn's station was inter- esting. That person seemed to say "where have you been?" I got something like "we've been on top of this reunion from the begin- ning and we will have the official site on the Web" from their message. How come their Web page didn't have any GFR information until a week or two ago? > ... And, I would say you deserve at least > a back stage pass or two!!!! Well, gosh ... ... I stopped by my friends' (married couple) house last night and thought I'd #1 share this with you and #2 ask for some feedback/help. My friend's names are Steve and Barb and just recently got married. Steve is an x-roomate of mine. He's a few years younger than me and Barb is around my age or a couple of years older. I'm 37. So, we're hangin' out drinking some beer and shootin' the shit and Barb has Zeppelin playing on the stereo. I've always known that she was a Zeppelin fanatic. So she says something like Zeppelin's the best or whatever and I said something like I beg to differ. I think Grand Funk is the best. So, her eyes light up and she looks right at me and says something like, you know, you're right! I love Grand Funk but I'm really ashamed that I don't have any of their stuff! So I start telling her how I'm flying all over the country to see them in a few weeks and she's getting really psyched. She said she had just heard Closer To Home yesterday and she starts singing that. So needless to say, now I got her in the palm of my hand...so to speak. So then she says can I borrow your Grand Funk CDs so I can make tapes of them...I promise I'll give them right back. So of course I'm gonna let her borrow the CDs! Now this is where I'd like to get a little feedback on what CDs to give her first. My first instinct was to give her Closer To Home, LIVE, Survival and E Pluribus. And then I said to myself that I'll throw in American Band and Caught In The Act too. What do you guys think? The only reason I wasn't gonna include On Time and Red AT FIRST was because of the recording quality. We all know those are great albums but the recording sucks! I was trying to think back to the sequence that I got the albums. It was something like this...American Band had just come out and that was my first! And then I think it was LIVE next. And then I went out and bought 3 in one day...Closer To Home, Survival and E Pluribus. Then from there who knows, Phoenix, On Time, Red and Mark, Don and Mel in no particular order. And then of course from there on it was the day the albums were released. Now, let me tell you a little about Barb. Like I said she's somewhere between 37 and 40 so she's right at that prime Grand Funk age like most of us. She is a wild woman! She loves to party and she loves hard rock and roll. Like I mentioned she's a Zeppelin freak and she likes alot of the head banging stuff of the 90s too. I know she is also a Who fanatic and loves the Moody Blues. So, I would say her musical taste is fairly diverse. I'm sure she likes a ton of other stuff too but I don't know the details! Oh, she also likes when we jam at partys and the stuff we play is mostly blues and classic rock. Now, when she said she loved Grand Funk I don't really think she knew what she was saying. And I say that only because she doesn't know every tune like we do. And I told her you can not take one Grand Funk tune and characterize their sound like that...they are very diverse! So, that's why I'm trying to carefully choose the albums that she listens to first. I figure by the time they tour out in the Rockies this summer, Barb will be a die-hard fan!! I hope! I also want to sit her down and show her the Shinin' On video. If you don't like that you don't like Grand Funk. And of course she'll probably immediately fall in love with Farner... sorry Steve! Speaking of Steve, he's clueless about the whole Grand Funk thing but he'll certainly go along for the ride (on the railroad). He knew I was a Funk fanatic from when he used to live with me. But that was a couple of years ago before all of the recent hysteria. Anyway, I'm curious to see what the real Funk fans have to say out there. I'd appreciate any feedback you guys could give me! I have been taking a doomsday approach to the way they are gearing up this tour. The crowds came enthusiastically to the small tour last year. I think GF and company assumed the same would happen this year. And it may yet. I hope so. But, it seems to me they are hoping the three big shows, followed by the European & Japanese tours, will prepare both the band and this country for the *real* show in July - Sept time frame. I wish, oh, how I wish, they would have had some exposure on MTV or VH1 before their first performance this year so it would generate more interest. How many others besides me expected the Roth/Van Halen reunion to rock the concert halls this summer before that blew out? The R/VH reunion on the MTV Music Awards, like the surprise reunion of original KISS members the year before, really opened up the market for them. To me, I don't think GF even needed to perform on the air to generate interest; just show up in public on national tv for some reason. Heck, I go to stores that sell used GF LP's for over $25. They know the band, but they know zilch about their reunion. You would think people in the business would know about this. But, when I tell them about the upcoming tour you can tell from their response they don't believe it. Hit the airwaves GF! Expose yourselves! Get online. Get on the radio, even if its 15 minute phone interviews. But, dang, just get the word out! It doesn't do any good for us to tell the world when they don't believe us. ------------------------------ From: "William A. Now I wonder what can be done to get these stations to scrap their play lists. As one who can remember the early FM days, I really miss being able to tune in a station and listen to things like Whipping Post live, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Inside Looking Out, or the live version of Space Trucking. Because of this, I have for years now, just about given up on radio or the possibility of finding any station playing things I want to hear. Along with Grand Funk, there are other bands still pumping out music (Deep Purple, Allman Brothers, Yes) and no station that I can find will play any of the new stuff or acknowledge the fact that the band is still active! I've gone the route of calling in requests and you can tell that these guys don't want to, or aren't allowed to deviate from their damn play lists! Even the local alternative station plays the same things until you just want to scream. I'd love to find a local station with the balls to say no to play lists and tell the advertisers to butt out. I'm wondering if any other folks on the list feel the same way? I'm hoping that this type of atmosphere doesn't ham string the bands reunion. The address is 2600 Livernois Road and, according to the map, it's right off of I-75 and about 20 minutes away from The Palace of Auburn Hills. The phone number there is 810/689-6856. At the moment, Jeff and I are planning on arriving on Saturday around 6 p.m. or so and are planning on staying at least one and (although I haven't cleared it with Jeff yet) maybe two nights. Although the management of the hotel said we couldn't have a "party" in the room, we would like to invite any of you list mem- bers who are going to be in the area the night before the "biggest event in rock music history" to stop by and say hi. Please call first so we can tell you which building and room we're in and, of course, BYOB. If you are looking for a room in the area, I'd like to suggest that this particular hotel is relatively close and inexpensive (for two or more guests). Jeff and I will end up paying about $60/night each for our one room. And, the more Funk fans we have there, the less it will look like a party. But, act quickly! The lady who took my reservation said that they typically sell out rather fast. And, don't forget that on the day of the show, Greg Wereley said he wanted to gather together in The Palace parking lot be- fore the show to talk and trade stories and memorabilia. I'm sure Greg will have more on this later. And, if Jeff and I end up staying the second night, it might me neat to find a local pub or something to "cool down" in. Perhaps, if we ask nicely, we can get Greg or another local list member to look into this for us. Well, that's all for now. I hope to see many of you in Auburn Hills, take care, and grok in fullness ... Yeah, you're right on the money! Most people in the US right now STILL don't know about the Grand Funk reunion. I know NOBODY around here (Colorado) knows but I've been telling people. Most people have the same reaction though..."Are they coming around here?" So, as long as the people know that they're alive and touring and coming to a city near by, they'll go to the shows. But people just don't have a clue because it is NOT being publicized! If it weren't for the internet and all you great folks I too would not have a clue. 1/2 a clue in Colorado, Phil ------------------------------ From: Phil Catalano Date: Sun, 6 Apr 1997 10:00:03 -0600 (MDT) Subject: Re: List-member problems > And Phil, Mick is having a similar problem! Ralph, I feel EXACTLY the same way. Unfortunately I don't think there's a goddamn thing we can do about it. Unless we open up a radio station of our own. Actually, that's a dream of mine. If I had the money (to blow) I would have a radio station that refuses to play the bullshit songlists that we all know and love (NOT!) and I'd play stuff like Space Truckin', and Inside Lookin' Out, etc... Along with that, I'd have a bar that sells Budweiser for $5 a glass and has Microbrews for like .50 cents a glass! Here in Europe, the Netherlands, at the moment there isn't any radio station playing GFR songs (yet). Back in the seventies GFR was heard on the radio quite often. E Pluribus Funk was the record of the week once at 'Radio 3' back in 1971. I hope now that GFR will do a European tour the radio stations will start to play GFR songs again. About 10 years ago I sent the 'Grand Funk Hits' CD to a DJ on Radio 3 with the request to please play some GFR. He thanked me for the CD on line, but all he played was 'Somekind of Wonderful' once. After that I've heard 'We're an American Band' once, 'Wild' once 'Somekind of wonderful' a few times. And that's was that in these last 10 years. I've updated Radio 3 and radio Veronica a few times by e-mail telling them about the GFR reunion. Now I'll tell them GFR is coming to do a European tour. Hopefully they'll finally start playing GFR again. About 3 years ago we moved to the house we're living in at the moment. One evening I was going outside and passed a neighbour. He was holding a record in his hands. Alot of small square pictures on it. "Huh? Caught in the act...I didn't know you are a GFR fan!" I said. He taped all my records, those he didn't have yet. His favourites are The Red Album and Phoenix. Of course the best always leave the first. One month later he moved way up north (well for the Netherlands that's only 300 kilometers). I'm going to send him a card about the Amsterdam concert, then we'll probably meet again 28th may. By the way has anybody heard of 'the Wall Flowers'? They will be the supporting act in Amsterdam 28th may.... CU, Nico. ------------------------------ From: einar@rfci.net Date: Sun, 06 Apr 1997 16:58:44 -0400 Subject: The story of my life! Talked to 'The Grokker' yesterday and we traded some info and opinions about the Funk, mailing list, Fishof and this whole publicity thing thats not happening. I personally feel these web sites, mailing list and you guys and gals participation on all has done far more for the band than what any other person or organization has done. As someone else said, if it wasn't for the web I wouldn't know jack! What really jerked me off is when the DJ, Gary Fox?, said Mark was not aware of any web sites. I have a personal 'net' friend who told me about Farners back injury as soon as it happened and said he on Mark were cruising a laptop while he was bed-ridden that had some of my email to him plus the Logbook. He even passed on some events people were asking me to get him to play at prior to the 97 plans. Not to mention a guy from Canadian Public TV, who is legit, wanted to do a profile on Grand Funk but has apparently is getting no cooperation what-so-ever. Talk about passing up free publicity!! So he has decided that he and I will collaberate on a magazine article, electronic I beleive, and do our own thing anyway. Anyhow, Bill is a swell guy as everyone has stated. Definately not a Hillbilly like me! Can't wait to meet all of you at the big Auburn Hills blowout! And Jayster, If you are reading this I'll take both for $20. The Wall Flowers are a new band fairly popular with the youngsters here right now; their lead member is the son of Bob Dylan. I've heard (and heard and heard...) the two or three songs they've played on the radio - they're OK, not really my cup of tea. Robert ------------------------------ From: "Andrew Kim M.
