I had the privilege Tuesday night of meeting Mick of the infamous Catalano brothers here in Raleigh (Chapel Hill to be precise). We met at a local microbrewery and had some dinner and a few amber ales, talked Funk and such, and generally just had a good time. Mick even expensed the dinner and brews - what a great guy (Thanks again, Mick!). On another note, it looks like I'll be meeting some of you other Funkers at the LA show! A friend in Tulsa (not on the mailing list yet) got us two tickets at 10:10 Sunday; fortunately he didn't have to go through the extremes Phil and Donna went through for them! We're in the North Terrace about 20 rows up on the end of the aisle; I was concerned at first (would've much preferred center seats), but after viewing the overhead shot of the Greek at their website, I don't think there's a bad seat in the house. Talking with my friend a couple of days after he got the tickets, he told me that they still had some $60 seats in the orchestra pit available when he called, but they didn't have two together so he didn't get them :-( . He said he didn't want to watch the show with a bunch of strangers - my response was, anybody who's willing to pay $60 to sit in the first 3 rows to see GFR most likely isn't going to be a stranger! Oh, well, maybe on the next tour... The only CDs available from Capitol are Closer To Home, E Pluribus Funk, We're An American Band, and Caught In The Act. However, most all of the LPs have at one time or another been available from Collectors Pipeline, EMI - Canada, or EMI - Japan. Getting hold of these non-Capitol releases is another issue! Neither MCA nor Warner Brothers have said (although there have been rumors) that they are planning to release the other Funk LPs in CD format. I believe Capitol has plans to eventually, some- day, sometime in the possibly distant future, before all of us have turned too old and too grey, to release the entire Catalog on CD. An organization by the name of Punch Enterprises is said to be working on this with Capitol. > ... > 3) Can anyone spare a "Shinin On" LP. And I immediately tried to rip the T-shirt off his back. No, he's not that good looking, but he had a GFR T-shirt from the '96 tour. We had dinner and a few brews. As promised, it was my treat, although I forgot my Beacon tickets at the hotel. What I found most interesting was that Robert became a Funk fan in '82; long after their heyday. To this day Robert hasn't heard Born to Die or Good Singin'.... Well, I'm gonna fire off a copy of each off my new CDs (thanks Jeff and Phil) as soon as I can. Robert is in for a treat. Our conversation never got as deep into Funk as I think we both would've liked. We had to respect his wife's presence. It was fun though, meeting up with another funk fanatic. We definately Groked. The night went too fast. So, the rumor is that Robert may be joing us in LA for the show! It's not 100% confirmed, but I'm hoping. Then, whether the wife's there or not, he will talk Funk (or be Funked); Phil will definately see to that. I can get used to this "travel around the country and meet Funk fans" thing. And that is goodness. I've been thinking about this for the last week. And, I'll admit it, I got a little peeved. So, I decided (as you Texas folks will understand :-) ) to take the proverbial "bull by the horns." It really is amazing what Alta Vista turns up with +"classic rock" +"radio station" as the search string. Among all of the Web sites that have something to do with "classic rock" and "ra- dio stations," a couple of interesting ones popped up: http://www.rronline.com/crradio.htm http://www.gebbieinc.com/radintro.htm So, I polished up my UNIX skills, downloaded and massaged some data, and ended up sending an invitation to visit my Web site and learn about the band and the reunion to almost 300 rock-oriented radio e-mail addresses. I think this qualifies as a "spam." So, if no one hears from me over the next few weeks you know that the e-gendarmes caught up with me and I'm "serv[ing] my time doin' the best I can" in some e-cell in an e-penitentiary somewhere in cyber-space. But, hopefully, this will help get the word out a bit and maybe avoid some more of those situations that steelhorse wrote about above. Today I talked with Jan Besselsen, a Really Major dutch GFR Die Hard Fan! He visits alot of old record/magazine/book markets. He found somebody who can deliver a bootleg record of the '73 waab tour! He's working on getting it. Such a record sells for about $300. He also found a dutch music magazine from '70 with an article from a dutch dj visiting the usa back then. He wrote that he was sitting on the sofa watching a channel on tv when suddenly the announcement came 'Alice Cooper and the Grand Funk Railway' (no that's not another of my writing mistakes). 'And he could enjoy 90 minutes of a great concert...' Everybody who has the Texas video 'Are you ready' can hear the typical announcement at the beginning of the clip 'Grand Funk Railway'. So that was a 90 minutes show. Say 45 min. Alice Cooper and 45 min. Grand Funk Railroad. That's much more then only the Are you ready. So where is the rest? He also has in writing from Mark Farner that he autographed alot of video's that fans took along such like ABC in concert, or San Diego 71. Copies are out there, but who has them?? Mark can't deliver, because the originals were burned. Also the 'Inside looking out' Cincinatti(?) video was any live satellite broadcast to Japan much more then only 'Inside looking out'. Where is and who has the rest? I hope someone will be able to locate all that great stuff. To make it shorter I have everything from their first up through Shinin on , plus for two greatest hits discs. I do not have M,D,& M , because it wasn't released to my knowledge. However, the only two songs they play are American Band & Closer To Home. God forbid they take a chance and play Footstompin' or, this is really goin' out on a ledge, Rock & Roll Soul or Heartbreaker. Hey, I'll even settle for Walk Like A Man. Q104 FM (classic rock) out of NYC who is listed on the Beacon tickets, hardly plays Funk at all. I keep flipping to that frequency and have yet to hear squat about Funk (song or concert). NYC's WNEW 102.7 (classic rock) doesn't play much Funk either. The only station that has played non standard Funk tunes was WPLR 99.1 FM out of New Haven, CT. I've heard Winter & My Soul and Heartbreaker during their Physcedellic Sunday program. I want to hear more obscure Funk tunes on the radio. The problem with me is that once I hear one, I expect the rest of the GFR collection in chronological order to be played. See ya in Row P, Al ------------------------------ From: "William A. I've never seen them, but had the opportunity to see Mark Farner a little over a year ago at a dive bikie bar called Shrauty's in Weymouth, MA. Great show, but really short. Lots of people there going wild. In fact, I saw my MAILMAN there! I have a couple of questions, does anybody know if GFR will play the Boston area in '97? Also, are there any plans for a full-blown box set of CD's? Looking forward to meeting you, Mick's younger half, Donna, and all the other fans. > I'm curious as to how you got 'into' Grand Funk in 1982? Well, as I phrased it in my introductory post (I was #13, I believe, so I know alot of you missed it), I missed out on their early heyday due to health reasons - I was born too late . I was 10 when American Band came out in '73; add that to the fact that my parents weren't into music at all and I'm the oldest in the family (so I didn't have a big bro to corrupt me with his music), and you can see I was lucky to have turned out with the musical tastes I've got! But around my sophomore year in college ('81-'82), a buddy brought over his older brothers vintage copy of American Band and a I became a Funk fan on the spot. From there we went to Closer to Home, then On Time, Red Album, E Pluribus, Survival and lastly Phoenix. Starting in '82 did have its advantages - - I wasn't limited to the release's chronological order and I didn't have to wait for the next album to be released! However, by the time I got to Phoenix and was starting to move onto Shinin' On, CDs came out and vinyl was hard to find. As we all know, the later albums are STILL not out on CD, so as Mick said, I've never heard Good Singin Good Playin, Born to Die, ... Robert ------------------------------ From: "William A. Welcome to the list. There are a little over 80 of us Funk fanatics here sharing stories, telling tales, and touching on trivia. Jump on in -- the water is fine and I don't think any- body bites! :-) > ... > I have a couple of questions, does anybody know if GFR will play the Boston > area in '97? ... Personally, I have recently been in contact with Fishof's of- fice about tour dates and such. It seems the only dates that are firm at the moment are the three Bosnian relief concerts, the Japanese tour and the concert in Sarajevo. There is another date in Las Vegas and I have heard that the band's booking agency is currently soliciting dates for the sum- mer in the U.S. If you know of anybody in the concert promotion business in your area, have them contact QBQ Entertainment in New York City. I think that a lot of GFR's summer plans are banking on the success of these three Bosnian relief concerts. > ... > Also, are there any plans for a full-blown box set of CD's? Capitol has only officially released 4 CDs: Closer To Home, E Pluribus Funk, We're An American Band, and Caught In The Act. Everything else from Capitol is on hold for some unknown reason. There have only been unfounded rumors about the MCA and Warner Brothers material. There was a rumor of a box set during the mini-tour last year. Mel mentioned something about one after a show to one of the fans. It never appeared and nothing new has been heard since. The recording that we are bound to see first, is the live record- ing of the Auburn Hills Concert -- no release date has been set. Again, welcome to the list. Take care, keep Shinin' On, and always grok in fullness ... Bill-- ...who defines a Budget as a mathematical confirmation of your suspicions.
