One of my "reliable sources" has been at it again. Jim Maijala ------------------------------ From: ktut@ix.netcom.com Date: Sat, 22 Mar 1997 14:09:35 -0600 (CST) Subject: stories Hello again fellow funksters, This is the last installment of my GFR concert memories. May 31, 1996. Raleigh NC. About a month before the show, I was scanning the concert listings in the newspaper. Every year, Winn-Dixie grocery stores sponsor a bar-b-que rib cooking contest at our local ampitheater, Walnut Creek. It occurs over Memorial Day weekend, Friday thru Monday, with a different style musical show every night. Rib cookers from all over the country compete. Friday's show was the Commodores, Saturday night was country, don't remember who, Sunday night was America and Three Dog Night, and Monday night was Eddie Money and Grand Funk Railroad. When I read this, I couldn't believe my eyes. I hadn't heard any rumors about a reunion, so I figured it was a copy band or something like that. So naturally, when I got home I began surfing the net to find out any information about the show. The only thing I could find at the time was a short note in some music critics page about GFR reuniting and possibly a short tour in the summer. This got my hopes up for a real return of THE American band. The next day I heard a commercial on the radio for the show, and the announcer said that it was indeed the original three members of the band together again. I began to make plans immediately to attend. My wife and I decided to take my son Mark (now 10) to the show to see his namesake perform. It was his first concert since Bocephus when he was 3 and we couldn't find a babysitter. We got to the show early, ate copious amounts of ribs and b-b-que, grokked fully on some cool drafts, and waited for the concert to begin. First was a local NC band, Purple Schoolbus. Not bad, kind of Grateful Deadish. Then Eddie Money performed an adequate show, but to tell the truth, while I am a fan of his, I was too pumped up about GFR to pay a lot of attention. Finally the big moment arrived, as the greatest band in the world, imodo, took the stage. It was a moment I will long remember. My favorite band together again after almost 20 years. The set list was pretty much as listed elsewhere, I was funkin' too much to write one down anyway, although I actually thought about it. They played a lot of early material, Mr. Limousine Driver, High Falootin Woman, etc. Of course the obligatory Locomotion and Some Kind. Being an amateur drummer myself, I couldn't wait for the Brewer drum solo. It was fantastic. He has not lost a lick. Farner's voice cracked a bit at first on the high notes, but after 3 or 4 songs, cleared right up and he sounded great. Mel bopped all over the place, seemed almost like a different guy. They had a keyboard player with them, don't remember his name, and Mark's brother Ricky also played guitar on a couple of songs. I must admit, they added some fullness on those songs. Closer to Home to close the show, then We're an American Band to encore. Unfortunately, there was a fireworks display scheduled for after the show, and they only got to play one encore. A lot of people were disappointed, and it took a few minutes for the crowd to clear out to the lawn to watch. There were thunderstorms in the area that night, and the fireworks were sent up with major lightning bolts in the background. It was pretty cool. All in all, another great memory of a great band. Sorry for the lengths of my posts, but I loved every minute of reliving the memories. Thanks for reading. BTW, my favorite line of the night. Mark was introducing the band members to the crowd, and lastly he said, " I'm Mark Farner, and we're Grand Funk Railroad, and we're BACK!!!" Amen brother. To the rest of you folks, speaking of gonzo, I had an interesting thing happen to me last week. I was wondering about the rumor that Ted Nugent was going to be a front band at the GFR concerts. I surfed around and found the Ted Nugent home page . I found where a person could E-mail the Nuge. At this point, I thought "yeah, right. I'll get an answer for this :-~" so I asked him to clarify the rumors. Ted answered me in a rather cryptic way, but he answered me, none the less. I'm still not 100% sure Ted will be there in NYC or LA based on this E-mail exchange, but it seems that way to me. > Rumor has it on the Grand Funk Railroad sites that you will be a front > band for them? There must have been > some promotion done down in L.A. > Donna, Sorry for the little book, but I'm just blowin' off steam!!! Enjoy... Yeah, I had my own little ordeal getting tickets. Of course, I didn't fly into LA to a local ticketmaster outlet, I was calling long distance from Colorado. Well, I started calling at about a few minutes to 10. I got through on the first call and talked to some girl and she says that tickets don't go on sale for another 3-4 minutes. Well if I only had a brain I would've asked her if I could stay on the phone with her until they went on sale. And if I would've known it was gonna take 17 minutes once I got through I certainly would've done my best to stay on the line that extra 3-4 minutes. Of course, hindsight is always 20-20! Well then I start calling a couple minutes later and now I can't get through! So now my adrenalin is pumping! I'm thinking to myself, Is this all for Grand Funk or did like Johnny Cash tickets just go on sale too?!?! Well, I had 3 different numbers I was calling so I kept round-robbin' those. Well I finally got through by like 10:05. Got through where I was put in the queue. You know...The next available agent, blah, blah, blah. So I waited probably about 5 minutes until something on the other end started trying to communicate with me! It certainly wasn't a human being! I think it was a tree stump!! This guy was dumb like a stump and could barely speak the language. English that is. That is the language we're suppose to speak in this country isn't it? So, I start telling this guy what I'm trying to do, buy 4 tickets to the Grand Funk show at the Greek Theatre on May 2. Grand Funk? Who? DUUUHHHHH!! Well, man talk about adrenalin pumping, I was getting pissed really fast. But, this guy had me by the "you-know-what" because I want tickets to Grand Funk and at this point he's the only way I can get them. So I had to be as polite as a New Yorker can be! So, I swear to you, the first 3 minutes this guy doesn't say a word. So I finally say, Are you still there? He replies so I know he is there. What he's doing, I don't have a clue, and neither does he! So know I've got these visions in my head that every minute that passes by, there goes another section! And by the way, by this time I'm taking notes cause I new this was gonna be a total ordeal. Of course, I'm typing this from memory because I forgot my notes at home. But I'm real close! My time lines may be off by a minuter or two but this is NO exageration. So know after nothing happening for like 5 minutes he asks me if I have a subscription to the Greek Theatre (there goes another section) and of course I say NO, what are you talking about? So he starts explaining that you have to have a subscription first and he starts spewing out all of this crap (there goes another section) and finally I just cut him off and said, Look I'll pay whatever fee you want for this stupid subscription, all I want is 4 tickets to the Grand Funk show! The next thing he tells me is that the subscription is free but there is a charge?!?!? (there goes another section). Anyway, we finally start talking about tickets now so the first thing he says is "Now who was the artist?" So I say Grand Funk and like a minute later (there goes another section) he says "Grand Funk Railroad?" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! So then he goes through all of the ticket prices...$60, $33, $25, $17, something like that. So I say, yeah I'll take the $60 seats. Well, there silence again for like another minute (there goes another section) and he comes back and says, Oh there's no $60 seats available. So I said, look just give me the best seats you have available at this time!!! So now another couple of minutes go by (there goes another couple of sections) and he finally comes back and says ok you have 4 $33 tickets. So, now I'm greatful that I even got anything. Well I still think it took another couple of minutes before the 4 tix were actually allocated to me (there goes another couple of sections) So then he goes on and on about all of the service charges and all of this crap. I'm like, look I don't care, just tell me what seats I have. Well he proceeds on to take my credit card number and address and all of that so I'm giving him my address and I say blah, blah, blah...Colorado Springs. Are you ready for this? He's says could you please spell Colorado for me?!?!?!?!? You gotta be F%#$@$ kiddin' me!! So anyway, I finally get through all of this stuff and I ask him what seats I got. He says, Oh I don't know that. ALl I can tell you is that you have 4 $33 seats. You'll get the tickets in the mail no later than 2 weeks before the show. After this whole ordeal, can I trust that I'm actually gonna get these tix?? I didn't even get a confirmation number or anything! So, now I'm just praying that these tickets show up!! All in all the whole ordeal took about 17 minutes! So Donna, if what you say is true, I don't even know how I got the $33 seats, or if I actually did?! Anyway, sorry for rambling on like this...I'll see you at the show (I hope). WE'VE GOT TICKETS TO THE BEACON! It was pretty cool meeting up with some die--hard fans at the box office this morning. One guy, whom I never met before, knew me right away after my buddy called me, "Mick". I had my CAT (Catepillar heavy equipment) hat on and he says, "You must be one of the famous Cat bros. on the net." I said, "Wow, do you want my autograph?" And I said to a bunch of people on line, "Hey, is anybody here named 'Don o?'" The first gut on line says, "Yeah, that's me." So, Bugsy, I've got good news and less good news. Here's the good: Orch Left CTR Row Y Seats 13 & 15 (they're right next to each other, "evens" are on the other side) Here's the less good: Phil, me and 10 of our buddies are in rows P and Q. Everyone on line was pretty pissed when the Beacon announced that the first ten rows were blocked out for telephone sales (Ticketmaster). We got the best seats we could. I'm back from my trip and want to report on meeting the Grokmeister himself, Bill Parrette. I must say I had a great time with Bill. I got to see his office where he pulls all this stuff together. Talk about a bite head! I think he has more computer books and mags than McGraw--Hill! Bill definately qualifies as a die-hard fan. We all know this from his site and insight, but to see it LIVE, that's what always convinces me. One of the best moments was when he got an email from one of his "reliable sources". I couldn't read it from where I was sitting, but he did paraphrase and share some of the "juice" with me. Felt like I was part of the "club" for a moment. Oh, and I can't divulge anything he told me under penalty of death (unless you heavily bribe me with microbrews and I don't actually feel the death part). Bill had a few GFR videos that I had not seen before either. That was fun, seeing the boys back in '69 and '70. We watched and critiqued TNUC and then (tried to) played some of it on Bill's kit. The first thing Bill played was the American Band intro. Right after that I knew he could probably play that part in TNUC he couldn't figure out. He just needed someone to show him! It was fun we went back and forth talking drums trading chops. I only wish I wasn't so rusty, but I think he got the idea. We cruised to a downtown Cincinatti microbrew for dinner ("Bill, where the hell are you taking me, man?" I asked after seeing the locals and the rats crossing the street!) It was a good time although the beer wasn't as good as I anticipated. We continued talking Funk and drums and then some other work related stuff. Later on we went back to Bill's place to watch some more videos both Funk and other stuff. I know there's nothing more boring than watching other peoples home videos, but I thought Bill would get a kick out of the three I brought. I showed him snippets of all three. Mainly, I wanted to show him what Phil and my wife, Jody, looked like. So, I showed him parts of our annual 4-wheel drive expedition to Moab Utah (last year). Then he saw a clip of a party my band played at back in '87 (embarrising!) I think he was more than kind with his comments! Lastly, he got to see part of a fire training video I did when I was a firefighter. When it was time to go Bill handed me an autographed copy of his UNIX book. Well, I thought that was the best. It's on my bookshelf in the living room! As I've said before (and I know my brother has too) Grand Funk fans are the best. And Bill is one heck of a Grand Funk fan, if you know what I mean. The good news is that we got tickets to both the NY and LA shows and I'll be going to both. The bad news is that that means I can't make the Detroit show and meet up with the gang that's going to that. :-( Maybe a little bit more good news. That also means that Bill has 2 extra tix now in that block of 10 that he's got. Those of you going to NY and LA, can't wait to meet ya! Hello World, I joined this list a few of weeks ago and I must admit that I am in awe of the number of true and die hard Grand Funk fans there are out here on the internet ... The Web Pages are awesome ... as well as the letters that have been written to this list ... I just received some of letters from a couple of people living in North Texas ... I am living in Allen, Texas at the moment as well. Unfortunately, it is far from my home sweet home: Flint, Michigan! I am having a hard time finding people in my generation, not living near an auto factory, who enjoy Grand Funk as much as I do ... I have tried my best to spread The Funk to these unfortunate souls everywhere that I travel ... and will continue to do so ... At least now I can rest knowing there are at least 50+ I can share it with !!! One of my fondest child-hood memories was riding my "big-wheel" around the block and seeing, the now famous Flint landmark, The Grand Trunk Railroad bridge overhanging Fenton Road ... Back when I was about "2" somebody had painted over the "TR" with and "F" and added those infamous names: Mark, Don, and Mel ... I never knew what it meant until I got older ... It still stands exactly the same to this day ... I always check it evertime I return ... "But it's been months since - I've seen home ..." I did pay $450 for a plane ticket to get Closer to Home and catch the Grand Funk Reunion Concert at Pine Knob in Clarkston, Michigan ... I had the time of my life ... Especially when Mark commented on how I-75 was backed up all the way to Flint, Michigan !!! I thought I would never get the chance to see them live ... Now it looks like I might get the chance to see them AGAIN !!! I'm looking to do the same for the Palace show on April 20 in "The Motor City" with "The Madman" ... Grand Funk Lives !!! David P.S. I don't think he/she wants to reveal their name to the general public just yet. I do believe it's "the real thing" though. The In Concert date you asked about was recorded in December of '72 at MSG during the Phoenix tour. I saw the same show a few nights before at the Nassau Colesium on Long Island (which is pretty close to MSG in NYC). In my opinion, this was the best set of music I ever heard GFR play. I think it had the most variety and had some previously unrecorded stuff -- like Mark doing a guitar/vocal solo named (It's) Good to be Back in New York City and a drum duet between Mark and Don. It was simply THE best show I ever saw ( I saw them four times total as GFR and then two other variations of the band)! If you can get a bootleg of that show I highly recommend it. I had one, but my eight-track ate it. And, I'm still upset about it. Hope this helped you out. It's a recording of the FM transmission of the show. It's not the whole show though. Only the first few songs. Great concert. Mel goes really wild on the bass in the song Heart breaker. Flight of the Phoenix / Footstompin Music / Into the sun / Got to get it together / Heartbreaker. Followed by a piece of Freddie King. The radio DJ says Grand Funk will be back after Freddie King, but there is the end of the recording. I have to find someone with the complete recording (and on video?) I don't think it really changes anything except for some of the lyrics he will sing himself. He has referenced Jesus in his music since the earliest days all of the way through his solo albums. One interesting thing I read in some material Dave Staats sent me is that he has sometimes been banned 'by the management of certain clubs' from testifying on stage about his Christianity. They let him play his music, just wouldn't let him talk about it. Funkola ------------------------------ End of grand-funk-digest V1 #26 *******************************
