Also, "our boys" will be record- ing their *new live album* as well! There is supposed to be a new version of Closer To Home (the name of the '97 tour) as well as some new material. There should be some official statements from the band, VH-1, and Time/Warner soon. Once again, the Auburn Hills show is going to be the biggest of the three so if there's any way you can be there ... do it! My "reliable source" also passed on a FAXed copy of a possible poster to promote the Auburn Hills show. I tried to clean it up with PhotoShop but while some things got a little better, some other things lost some definition. I put it up at the top of the Concert Contacts page off of the Reunion and Concerts page which is page number 5 off of my main GFR page at my site. Stop by and take a look. But I thought it was worth mentioning again. Jay has a music-related site that he has put together called The Sonics. Jay is in pretty regular contact with all the major recording companies who let him review new releases and give him CDs and such to give out as prizes in his contests. As a result, these companies -- companies such as Capitol and MCA, which should have special meaning to us -- check his site out regular- ly. You really do want to go over to his site and sine his guest- book showing your support for his Grand Funk material. Do you know that 40 different Bee Gees fans signed in within a week com- pared to some 5 Grand Funk fans within a couple of months? Does this show support? Will this tell Capitol, MCA, and Warner Brothers that they should be releasing those old Grand Funk CDs? I don't think so. I've been there and signed in. That leaves 60 other list mem- bers that need to show their support. And, while you're at it, stop by Jeff Cochran's site (or mine) and sign his electronic pe- tition to Capitol as well! Let's show our support for the best band in the land -- *the* American Band -- and lets make it so we can all ride the railroad one more time!!! Take care and grok in fullness ... Back in 93 or 94 I saw Mark in Beaver Falls PA and he was his normal self -- great!!! However, after the show, we "true" FUNK fans hung out to meet with MARK after the show, which was his normal custom back then (execept meeting him at a restraunt after a GFR show!!) Anyways, I met a guy who saw GFR back in 71 at the Pittsburgh Civic arena. He told me that it was the greatest concert that he ever saw and remembers the details to this very day. I tested him on his general knowledge of Rock & Roll which I soon found out that he not only knew about rock & roll but he saw numerous concerts and saw all the big ones ie. Led Zep.,Who, Rolling Stones ect. ect. ect. ect. he saw them all but nothing compared to the GFR show in 71. He went on and told me about the show and was very detailed and I was able to tell that he was not bullshitting me. He said that the crowd was restless until the first act was done (black oak Ark.) Afterwhich, the lights went out and the crowd roared like he has never heard before, nor since. Then the crowd got even louder when the crowd saw MARK DON & MEL behind the stage,as flashlights were used for them to see when they came backstage up onto the stage. Then the event began! But what made this show so great was what happen or what was supposed to happen, after the show was over. GFR came out and did thier encore, and the show was or should have been over! We all know when it's that time -- RIGHT? Not this time however. The lights came on But NOBODY WOULD LEAVE - NOBODY !!!! After about 5 mins. of "WE WANT GRAND FUNK" The FUCKIN producer (and I don't swear much) came out and said the show was over and basicly told everyone to go home. AGAIN NOBODY WOULD LEAVE. EVERYBODY-16,0000 PEOPLE REFUSED TO LEAVE. THE CROWD JUST GOT LOUDER. THEN, WHILE THE LIGHTS WERE STILL ON - GRAND FUNK,APPEARED OUT OF NOWHERE AND CAME BACK OUT AND DID ANOTHER ENCORE - this is about 10 min.after the show was supposed to be over. NOW THIS WHOLE SCENE HAPPENED 4 MORE TIMES - THE CROWD REFUSED TO LEAVE AND GRAND FUNK CAME OUT 4 MORE TIMES AND DID ENCORES. When they should have been on thier plane. BOY - I WISH I WAS THERE. I know why they were a peoples group. THE POWER OF THE PEOPLE!!! Remember it is going to happen, DAVID ------------------------------ From: "William A. Yes folks, I got to meet -- in the flesh -- one half of the by now famous funky Catalano brothers! And, what a short but won- derful evening it was. Did I just say short? We spent close to 6 hours together and it seemed like it sped by all too quickly. When Mick got here I had my new Japanese import Survival CD playing on my computer's CD and we immediately started talking Funk. What a great time! Then, we watched a little bit of (okay, most all of ...) the T.N.U.C. solo of the Live in L.A. (actually San Diego) tape that most of us have a copy of. So, number 3 above was taken care of pretty quickly. Mick showed me his interpretation of the part I was having problems with and, boy, did he leave me standing in the dust. I'll tell you folks, he said he was rusty from not playing for five years, but Mick played just as crisp as if he'd been off for a couple of days. If you ever get a chance to see him play or play along with him, do it! We then took care of number 4 above by driving into downtown Cincinnati to visit a local micro-brewery called The Barrel House, had dinner and toasted my cola-beverage to one of Cincin- nati's local brews. I don't think the taste impressed Mick, but we still had a great time discussing Funk and some more music topics. I think it was here that he convinced me that I have to put some effort into learning to play more ambidextriously. When we got back to the house, we had a little more time to watch and talk Funk. We watched a little bit of Into the Sun from the Weekend Rebellion film, some of the Cincinnati and Texas Pop Festivals, and then spent a lot of time looking at and ana- lyzing the lip-singing, and instrument-miming on the Playboy Af- ter Dark segment. Now we never did get to number 2 above but Mick impressed me by showing me some of a design he's working on that he's also go- ing to get patented for his company. That's way cooler than de- signing a new operating system. ;-) And for an even bigger sur- prise, did you know that Mick used to be a NYC fireman? Boy, the stories he could tell ... and he even brought some video! We watched two clips from a tape that he brought which includ- ed him playing drums in a little three-piece band at a back-yard picnic. Then that was followed by some firefighting training video he participated in as well. And, yes folks, we even accomplished number 5 above -- we to- tally grokked in fullness. I have to tell you folks attending the Beacon show in NYC, make a point of getting together with Mick and have a Funkengruven great time! I envy all of you who will be going to the upcoming shows, and will be thinking of you groking in fullness on those nights. It will be great. I've been fortunate enough to see the boys 4 times and Mark once on solo tour. I thought I'd post a few memories of these shows from time to time. The first time was as a fifteen year old with my older brother in Roanoke VA when We're an American Band was no. 1 on the charts. I don't remember much except I went totally nuts. We didn't have the best seats, kind of up on the side, and I couldn't see all of them all the time. Billy Preston opened, and it was my first concert ever. The next one was by far the best. They were opening for ZZ Top in Greensboro, NC, right after Grand Funk Lives was released. My wife and I got to the arena very early, two hours or so before the show. As we were standing outside, we could hear GFR doing a sound check. I bribed the guard with a twenty to let me go in and listen, and to my surprise, he wouldn't take the money, but let us in anyway. We were allowed to go in beside the stage and listen from there. Needless to say, I was in heaven. They played Queen Bee, and Closer to Home. Not all of either, but half or so, with no vocals. Then Mark moved over to the keyboard, and played Mean Mistreater, vocals and all. The band then played part of Footstompin Music, and that was all. The show rocked, although I missed Mel, (Bellinger was adequate, but it just ain't the same, ya know?), and even though I like ZZ Top a lot, it was no comparison. Don't remember the set list, they played 45 minutes or so, closed with Closer to Home, and encored with WAAB. A week or so later, the same tour was in Roanoke, and we were planning to go again. However, there was a major winter storm, lots of ice and snow, and the roads were bad. We debated all day whether or not to go, and finally decided, what the hell, it was Grand Funk and we were going. The ninety minute drive took 4 hours, but we made it. Another great show, exactly like the other one, but well worth the effort. After the show, we went to the Pizza Hut near the arena where my wife's sister was the manager, (no, the band didn't come in), and drank free beer and ate free pizza til 2 am, then crashed at the sister-in-laws place. This post is getting long, and I'm getting old, If you like I will post more later. Love the list, and it's really great to hear from all the other funkheads out there. The hosts on AOL can create topics, but that will take a month while they get to know the new, non-scrolling method of the message boards. Too bad. Our Grand Funk message folder was deleted for lack of participation about a week or so before they began this policy. Now, we are forced to look outside our AOL world. This mailing list is a good step in that direction as is the message area on Grand Funk Railroad,. One option I've never looked into which someone might have an opinion about is using IRC to get together. For those unfamiliar with this acronym (mostly on AOL), it stands for Internet Relay Chat and allows internet users the ability to chat live the way those of us on AOL have done so often. Does anyone know if AOL users can use IRC? I've never seen it discussed. I will look into it, but if anone knows for sure, please speak up. Even though the AOL world is large, it would be great if we could branch out and chat live with fellow Grand Funk fans who don't use AOL, as well as those who do. At most, there were 300 people in attendance. He was playing with a Christian rock band called Vision, which also included the piano player from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Powell. Vision played about 30 minutes, then brought up Farner. Obviously the vast majority of the crowd was there to see Mark, because the rather quiet audience erupted when he came out. He talked a few minutes about his religion, and then introduced 3 or 4 songs from his first Christian album. He explained how he had always written songs music first, then lyrics, but since he found religion, the lyrics were revealed to him first, then he wrote the music to suit them. He played Judgement Day Blues, Airborne Rangers, and a couple of others, and we were beginning to doubt whether or not he was going to play any Funk songs. But after a few minutes, he said see if you remember these. He ripped into Footstompin Music, and the crowd again went nuts. He followed with Some Kind of Wonderful, Locomotion, Bad Time, Closer to Home, and a few more, then left the stage to thunderous applause, (well, as thunderous as 300 or so folks could be.) Vision continued to play without him, and after a while we decided Mark wasn't coming back out and we would get home. My first son, ironically named Mark, (don't know where I got that name from) was two weeks old and with a babysitter for the first time and the wife was anxious to get home to him. As we climbed down from the bleachers, we spotted Mark (Farner, not my son) standing along the fence beside the stage meeting people from the audience. Needless to say, we went over, shook his hand, took a few pictures, and thanked him for the show. Someone asked him if Grand Funk would ever get back together again, and he said something like "not unless they find God." Proves the old adage, never say never. He invited everyone to stay for a revival service they were going to have after the concert, but we had to leave. Those pictures and the autograph that I got that night are prized possessions to me now. One more to go, but I have to be at work at 6 a.m. tomorrow. I'll post the last story about the Raleigh NC show last year when I get home tomorrow.
