Grand Funk Lives is pretty good; What's Funk is ok; but I think the band hit a home run with Good Singin-Good Playin' which is as good as anything they ever did. It just needed some promotion. Well normally I play guitar, on this occasion it was a concert that was dominated by computers and synths so I played on two keyboards that were more or less comminucation devices then a musical instrument. In the early 70's i had my own band " HORROR" we played GFR songs punk style (before the Sex pistols ) After that I did not play for a long time, last year I bought a Gibson SG and I am practicing a lot , mainly blues and Jazz. I am considering forming a new band I have the name and line up : THYLACINE (Tasmanian Tiger) and it's going to be the real GFR 3 piece line up. They're all I've played since I got them. Have you listened to them on the headphones yet?!?!?!?!? Unbelievable! I'm hearing all kinds of shit that I've never heard...two things in particular. One of Farner's voices (the lower one). He's (I think it's all him on some of these songs although it could be part Donnie too...his voice is just as awesome and he's surprised the shit out of me over the years when I've found out that it's him singing and not Farner!) got a 3-part harmony going on a lot of songs and in the past I've really only heard the dominant one with the second harmony. But on the headphones you can hear it really well and it's awesome!!! The other thing I've been hearing is some of Farner's rythym guitar that I never heard in the old days. And that's awesome too! Particularly on Good Things and Goin' for the Pastor. Everytime I listen to them it's gets better. And then on Can You Do It, they're all laughing their asses off. I've heard most of that in the past but when you listen on the headphones you can hear a lot more going on. They had an absolute blast doing that tune! Yes, thanks a million to Jeff...Great job!!!!!! Phil ------------------------------ From: Phil Catalano Date: Sun, 9 Mar 1997 14:12:06 -0700 (MST) Subject: First GFR Fan Meeting? Well folks, I believe we've had the first official in-person meeting of the Grand Funk fans from this list (at least that I've heard of so far). I just got back from Vegas and had the pleasure of meeting up with Mike Butler on Thursday night. Mike is a great guy, I'm glad I had the chance to meet him. I've always said that Grand Funk fans are the greatest and I still stand by my statement! I met up with Mike at 6:00 p.m. and by that time I'd been drinking for probably 4-6 hours! So I apologize to Mike if I wasn't coherent but I think I was? And that's not the end of it. Mike, you thought you had a good buzz...After we left you, we went downtown and I drank until 5:00 in the morning. And I mean I drank! I got so fucked up that I didn't know what I was doing at the craps table, and I DO know how to play craps. But I still walked away from that table up somewhere between $10-$50. Can't complain there! Oops, sorry to get sidetracked, we're suppose to be talking about Grand Funk here. Well, Mike and I certainly did talk the funk. I would've loved to talk more funk with him but I had two of my friends there, Mike and Lisa, who don't know the first thing about Grand Funk. So they couldn't join in the funkersations. I do remember Lisa joining in one of them though. I was trying to explain to the Grand Funk illiterate about what this reunion was like to me. I said it was like the Beatles getting back together. Well, Lisa jumped all over that because she said it wasn't fair that one of the members was dead. She was totally missing the point but I believe I made my point (Mike, you tell me). The non-funkers JUST DON'T GET IT! But nevertheless we had a great time with Mike that night. So, lets keep up with these funk-meetings. If any of you are ever in Denver or Colorado Springs or the surrounding areas please don't hesitate to drop me a line. I'll have you over and we'll drink good beer all night and listen to On Time through Good Singin' Good Playin'! Oh, I guess we should watch the videos also! I'll save those for the end. Especially the Shinin' On Tour show. Mike has never seen that one and I was telling him how good it was! I think he was pumped up to see it! Speaking of that video, Mick, why don't you reminisce about the first time you saw that video. I'll still never forget that time! Well, I'll shut up now! Phil p.s. Hope to be singing this tune at the end of April: Went to New York just the other day, The smog is bad but not as bad as LA... - --==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--= Phil Catalano phil.catalano@mci.com - --==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--= ------------------------------ From: jmaijala@sprynet.com Date: Sun, 9 Mar 1997 19:53:30 -0800 Subject: Re: Sheet music Hi Phil, Do you have sheet music to other songs? Jim ------------------------------ From: "Michael Catalano" Date: Mon, 10 Mar 97 6:16:52 EST Subject: re: First GFR Fan Meeting? Phil--Sounds like you and Mike had a great time! I'm looking forward to meeting some of you people from the list too. If I remember correctly ( I think I'm still a little hung over from this story) the first time I saw your Shinin' On video was the first time I went to Colorado to visit you in March of '92. As I recall you had several "little" suprises for me that trip. The first was a keg of Paulaner Hefeweissen which we proceeded to drink while you sprang number two, the video, on me. Yeah, that was unbelievable, visiting you in Colorado, Pike's Peak peering through the back window, great beer and GRAND FUNK RAILROAD Live in the living room. I think I passed out somewhere during Brewer's solo after my 16th pint! (ohhh man). The third surprise was a party in my honor, only I wasn't really there, those Hefer's kicked my ass! Anyway, I think I wound up in bed with five of Phil's closest girlfriends. Don't even ask if anything happened, I'll never know! (those Heifers kicked my ass too!) So the moral of the sorry is: Take Phil up on his invite to his house, he'll get you drunk, play good music for you and get you laid; you just won't be able to remember how great it was.....but, don't worry all his friends will keep reminding you how much fun you really had! Jimmy K is footstompin all night long! > The Flint album is an album recorded by Don, Mel, and Craig either in '77 or '78 right around the time of the first Farner solo album. The album cover has a picture of the 3 of them on the front looking a little bit serious and then on the back they're all laughing with a couple of other guys who played on the album. I've got the album at home so if you want any info on it just let me know and I'll get it for you. I doubt it was or ever will be released on CD so I wouldn't look there. Phil p.s. I like the album. I think it sounds alot more like the later funk than any of Farner's stuff. Of course it was 75% of Grand Funk so it makes sense. ------------------------------ From: "William A. Parrette" Date: Mon, 10 Mar 1997 17:50:44 -0500 (EST) Subject: GFR Writing Project Hi all, Just a brief note to let you all know that a published author who has either written or co-authored a couple of other rock 'n roll-oriented books has a publisher lined up for a book on our favorite topic: Grand Funk Railroad. The writer is Billy James, who goes by the stage name of ANT- BEE, and he has asked me to let all of you know that he would like your input. If you have any public domain photos that you've taken or articles that you have written or will write and would like to contribute them to the book, then you should con- tact him. Billy's e-mail address is 102034.3223@CompuServe.COM. Billy sent me a copy of the book that he wrote with Michael Bruce -- guitarist for Alice Cooper -- entitled _No_More_Mr._Nice_Guy_. It is very well done and informative. So I am sure he can do a "bang up" gob on the best band in the land, *the* American Band, Grand Funk Railroad. Take care, grok in fullness ...
