I posted a "What's Don using now?" question on rec.music.mak- ers.percussion a while back. One of the readers took a look at the reunion picture sent in by Jeff Davis on my page and said that they were Peavy drums. And, didn't I hear someone say here -- or maybe on Jeff's or Donna's guest book page -- that Mark had an endorsement agreement with Peavy? If this is true, it wouldn't surprise me if they used Peavy everything. Kind of funny actually -- I was actually playing music regu- larly when Peavy first came out. They were the butt of many a joke in the circle of musician friends that I hung out with. Now it seems that they have kind have replaced Fender as the mainstay of rock 'n roll musical equipment. Boy, I sure do miss those red-sparkle Ludwig drums. I wonder what ever happened to the West company that made the amps they used originally. Take care, and grok in fullness ... I was always of the opinion that Grand Funk Railroad covered "Gimme Shelter" simply because it was a song that they liked at the time and just felt like covering it for the sheer fun of it. Same thing with "Feelin' Alright", and even "Inside Looking Out". In Paducah, KY, where I grew up, GFR received a lot of airplay, and they used to play "Gimme Shelter" quite a bit. I think Survival is a great album and "Gimme Shelter" is one of their best covers, right behind "Inside Looking Out". Although I've always liked Joe Cocker's version of "Feelin' Alright" more than GFR's version, Three Dog Night's version, or the original Dave Mason Version, the style in which "Feelin' Alright" is played by GFR seems to fit in with the overall sound of the Survival album, which was definitely quite different from their previous albums. Also, I think that Survival is even further proof of what a diversified and great drummer Don Brewer is. Of course, all of that is just my own opinion. :-) I have one question: Why was "I'm Your Captain" called "Closer to Home" on the Caught In The Act album? I MUST START BY SAYING THAT WHEN I WROTE TO YOUR SITE ABOUT OUR NEW MANAGEMENT CLIENTS, GRAND FUNK, I WAS OVERWHELMED WITH THE INITIAL RESPNSE. IT DID GIVE ME THE STRENGTH TO TRY TO PULL ALL ENERGIES TOGETHER AND MAKE THIS THE BIGGEST COMEBACK TOUR AND CAREER THIS YEAR, 1997. I HAVE KNOWN MARK FARNER FOR MANY YEARS, SINCE HE WENT ON ONE OF MY ORIGINALLY PRODUCED "SUPER 70'S FEST" TOUR AND AGAIN I WANTED HIM FOR RINGO'S LAST TOUR. EACH NIGHT, I ENJOYED WATCHING MARK PERFORM BUT MOST IMPORTANT, GETTING TO KNOW HIM AND SEEING WHAT A GENUINE KIND PERSON HE IS, WHICH MADE HIM SOMEONE I ALWAYS WANTED TO GET INVOLVED WITH. I THEN HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET DON AND MEL AND I FOUND THEM TO BE EQUALLY INCREDIBLE PEOPLE. DON BREWER AND HIS WIFE SUNNY ARE LIVING IN FLORIDA. SUNNY IS A DJ ON THE LOCAL RADIO STATION AND SHE IS CONSTANTLY RUNNING TOY DRIVES AND OTHER CHARITABLE EVENTS. MEL SCHACHER AND HIS BETTER HALF DEENA ARE LIVING IN MICHIGAN ALSO PERFORMING MANY ACTS OF CHARITY IN THEIR LOCAL COMMUNITY. I ASKED THE GUYS IF THEY WOULD PERFORM A FEW CONCERTS TO BENEFIT THE ORPHANS OF BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA. MY WIFE JUDY AND I VISITED SARAJEVO, BOSNIA LAST JUNE AND SAW FIRST HAND ALL THE TRAGEDIES THAT WENT ON OVER THERE VISITING TROOPS AND ORPHANS. MANY STARS SUCH AS SHERYL CROW, PAVAROTTI, ERIC CLAPTON, BONO AND OTHERS HAVE BEEN OVER THERE VISITING TROOPS AND ORPHANS. WHEN I WATCHED NBC'S BROADCAST OF SCHINDLER'S LIST LAST NIGHT, YOU CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THIS SAME HOLOCAUST TOOK PLACE IN THE 90'S IN BOSNIA. THERE ARE MANY ORPHANS AND REFUGEES WHO NEED HOUSING AND THE STRENGTH TO REMAIN IN THIS BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY SIDE. I'M TELLING EVERYONE THIS, SO YOU UNDERSTAND SOME BACK GROUND OF WHERE I AM TAKING YOU WITH THIS LONG MESSAGE. I CAME BACK AND MET THE UNITED NATIONS AMBASSADOR, THE HONORABLE MOHAMMED SACIRBEY , AT THE UN AND TOLD HIM ABOUT MY RECENT INVOLVEMENT WITH GRAND FUNK. HAVING ATTENDED TULANE UNIVERSITY IN HIS YOUTH, HE TOLD ME, IT WAS ONE OF HIS FAVORITE BANDS, AND HE WOULD BE HONORED IF THE THREE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF GRAND FUNK WOULD PERFORM IN SARAJEVO AND IN AMERICA TO HELP PUBLICIZE THE PLIGHT OF THE ORPHANS AND REFUGEES OF BOSNIA HERZEGOVINA AND HELP BRIDGE TOGETHER OUR TWO GREAT COUNTRIES. THE CONCERTS ARE IN NO WAY ANY POLITICAL STATEMENT. IT'S CONCEPT IS THAT ALL NATIONALITIES SHOULD LIVE IN PEACE, CATHOLICS, MOSLEMS, SERBS, JEWS, ETC... AND THERE SHOULD NOT BE ANY MORE WAR. ANYWAY, I ASKED THE BAND IF THEY WOULD DO SOME CONCERTS IN THREE MAJOR CITIES FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE ORPHANS OF BOSNIA. THEY ALL SAID LETS GO. THEY ALSO SAID THEY WANT TO GO TO BOSNIA AND PERFORM FOR THE PEOPLE AS WELL. SO WITH ALL THE ABOVE, HERE'S THE GAME PLAN. ON THE FOLLOWING DATES, THE BAND WILL PRFORM A FULL FLEDGE CONCERT ALONG WITH A 40-50 PIECE SARAJEVO ORCHESTRA AND SPECIAL GUEST STARS-NAMELY ROCK STARS THAT HAVE BEEN INFLUENCED BY GRAND FUNK OR FANS OF GRAND FUNK. PLEASE SEND IN YOUR IDEAS... THESE SHOWS PROMISE TO BE INCREDIBLE WITH THE BAND STARTING REHEARSALS VERY SOON. OUR PLAN IS TO RECORD AND FILM THESE SHOWS FOR RELEASE SOON AND FOLLOWING THE RELEASE THE BAND WILL TOUR AMERICA. WE ARE KEEPING THE TICKET PRICES LOW SO THAT THE FANS CAN ALL COME AND HOPEFULLY THEY WILL TURN ON THE YOUNGER GENERATION TO GRAND FUNK AS WELL AS ALL THEIR FRIENDS. THE PALACE OF AUBURN HILLS-DETROIT, MI. -- APRIL 20, 1997 AT 7:00 P.M. CAPACITY-6,000 THE BEACON THEATRE - NEW YORK CITY- FRIDAY APRIL 25, 1997 SHOWTIME TBA - CAPACITY 3,000 THE GREEK THEATRE-LOS ANGELES - FRIDAY MAY 2, 1997- SHOWTIME TBA - CAPACITY 6,000. TICKETS WILL BO ON SALE AROUND MARCH 8TH IN DETROIT, MARCH 10TH IN NY AND I AM NOT SURE WHEN LA WILL GO ON SALE. I'LL KNOW MORE OR YOU CAN START CALLING THE VENUES TO INQUIRE. ALL THE PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO CHARITY AFTER EXPENSES TO THE THE BOSNIAN AMERICAN RELIEF FUND. IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS REUNION THE BIGGEST EVER, WE NEED THE FANS TO GET THE WORD OUT THERE. I WILL LET YOU KNOW THE PROMOTIONAL PARTNERS NAMELY THE RADIO STATIONS, TV AND NEWSPAPERS THAT WILL BE SUPPORTING THE THREE CONCERTS. TICKET BUYS TO THESE EVENTS ARE IMPORTANT BECAUSE IN ORDER TO HAVE A BIG TOUR FOR THE REST OF '97, YOUR PATRONAGE IS MOST IMPORTANT. LAST SUMMER, 14,000 FANS CAME OUT IN TRIBUT TO THE BAND AT PINE KNOB AND IT WAS INCREDIBLE. IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS WE WILL ANNOUNCE THIS TO THE PUBLIC AND WILL BE HOLDING A PRESS CONFERENCE. I WILL KEEP YOU ALL INFORMED. LETS MAKE 97 THE YEAR GRAND FUNK TAKES OVER THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. I WANT TO THANK ALL THE FANS IN ADVANCE FOR ALL THEIR SUPPORT. I LIKE HEARING FROM ALL OF YOU AND I AM SORRY IF I COULD NOT ANSWER EVERYONE, BUT I AM WORKING ON A SYSTEM TO KEEP ALL OF YOU INFORMED FROM OUR OFFICES. IN THE MEANTIME, IF YOU WANT TO BE KEPT INFORMED, STAY TUNE TO ALL THESE GREAT WEB PAGES DEDICATED TO THE BAN AND WRITE TO MY ASSISTANT AT QBERT50@AOL.COM AND LEAVE US YOUR MESSAGE AND ADDRESS. MY BEST REGARDS TO ALL FUNK FANS, DAVID FISHOF PS I WILL ALSO INFORM YOU ABOUT OUR PLANS FOR RECORD COMPANIES AND MERCHANDISING AND OSSIBLE FAN FESTS IN THE NEXT FEW WEEKS. THE BAND IS PLANNING A TOUR OF JAPAN N LATE JUNE. ------------------------------ From: "William A. Parrette" Date: Mon, 24 Feb 1997 12:42:40 -0500 (EST) Subject: And we keep on growing! Hi all, This is your friendly list-owner saying hello. I just thought I'd take a second here and let you all know that the list is still growing. The Grand Funk mailing list is almost a month old and we've got (as of today) 35 subscribers! We've lost a few here and there -- which is to be expected -- but we *are* still growing! For all of the new folks here I'd like to let you know that just about any topic related to Grand Funk Railroad is completely acceptable and I strongly encourage your participation. Recent threads have included things like "what's your favorite song," "what *were* those lyrics on ...," "does anybody have any video/cds," and the like. So, feel free to jump in and talk about the best band in the land! A couple of notes and reminders: Any posts to the list at large should be sent to "grand-funk@roadkill.com" and you do *not* need to include any other roadkill.com address in your post. This one address will get your message to the list and ev- erybody will see it. Another point is that the mailing list server is configured to create the mail headers in a way such that when you 'R'eply to the post, your response will only go to the original author of the post -- not the list at large. You *MUST* use a 'R'eply-to- all type feature to get your response to be seen by the entire list. If you do not have this feature then you must modify the headers before you send the message such that either (or both) the "To: " and/or the "Cc: " lines contain the list address which, again, is "grand-funk@roadkill.com." As another point of interest to many list members, if you haven't done so already, is to please sign Jeff Cochrans elec- tronic petition to try to get All The Girls In The World Beware to be released on CD.. If you don't know Jeff's URL directly, I have a link to his site off of my main GFR Web page at my site. Again, feel free to jump into the conversation anywhere that feels good to you. Or, if you prefer, start a new thread of con- versation and let's talk Funk! Take care and always grok in fullness ... Bill-- ...who heard that armadillo means to provide weapons to a Spanish pickle.
