Some Definitions ...
« on: July 13, 2006, 01:30:01 AM »

As some of you may not be used to an on-line, Web-based (not e-mail-based) discussion tool as this is, some definitions might be in order ...

First, this Web-software system is called SMF and we are using version 1.0.7 (the e-mail system we used to use was called Majordomo).

This Web-software system occupies space in my personal Web-site and is generically referred to as a Forum.  A forum generally identifies a high-level discussion topic like "Grand Funk Railroad."

The Forum consists of one or more  "Boards.'  Boards define a high-level topic in a Forum.  We currently have 7 Boards (there may be fewer or more in the future):
     Administrivia
     Band Members; Past and Current
     Music and Lyrics
     Equipment
     Memorabilia
     General
     If You Must Argue

Forums and Boards can only be created by an Administrator.

Each Board has one or more Topics on a particular subject directly related to the discussion-purpose of the Board.  The Topics (like an e-mail subject) identify what the message-poster wants to discuss. A Board may have one or more nested "mini- or sub-boards" in it.

Each Topic may have one or more Posts and/or Replies in it.  The Posts and Replies can be created by any Forum Member and is the means of Discussion within this Forum.

Please note that unlike the old mailing list, there will be no archives created for his Discussion Forum.  Posts and Replies will be kept on-line for approximately 30 days (depending on traffic, this may be adjusted later) and will be deleted after that.

As you start becoming more familiar with the system, you will find out that there are a number of tools available to make you and your Posts more interesting and entertaining.
