  • I ordered two copies from CD Universe, one for my Brother and one for me. The price was good around $16 bucks each, I think its 17.99 there now, there prices jump around. CD Universe is in CT, so I get the CDs usually on the day of release, and I did get them today. I put the DVD right in and watched it.

To start off there was a nice surprise  the DVD is a separate disk, I had expected it to be a two sided disk with the DVD on one side, and the hits CD on the other. I don't love two sided disks, so I was happy with that.

The  DVD included the We're an American Band promo Rockumentry, which is cool, but has been out there for years, in other forms, for ever or at least for most of us since 1997, or so. In truth this DVD copy does not look much better then the version's I already have. BUT it is nice to have it on a professional DVD, instead of one I burned from VHS tape. The Second track is inside Looking out from PBS in Hershey Ra WITF TV which is funkin fantastic. I has seen snippets of this for years and was dying to have the whole thing.  Mark, Don and Mel in 1969 with the cloths from that period; Mark with His Messenger Guitar, with Tape over the holes, is just too cool. With Don and Mel the best rhythm section in rock and roll history you cannot go wrong. This looks and sounds great. LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT. The Third Track is Some Kind Of Wonderful From the Place at Auburn Hills, MI in 1997 during the ordinals reunion (1996-1998), a very nice version. the Next track is We're An American Band from that same show; Since we already have a versions of WAAB, I would of picked another track hear, maybe loneliness would of been a better pick hear. BUT still I cannot complain, GFR on DVD is very Cool .Both SKOW and WAAB are pristine (why not get this whole show out on DVD?) both tracks look and sound great. To Close out the DVD we have I'm Your Captain/Closer To Home from the famous Shea Stadium Show in 1971 were GFR sold out faster then the Beetles. This is very very cool, it looks very good and sounds very good, we have got to get this whole show out of DVD. The IYC was a medley and they cut out the rest of the medley so its short, BUT still is extremely cool. Mark again with he messenger we really have got to get the whole show out on DVD. Overall I like the DVD but it should of been at lest an hour long, what about including the GFR promo that was used in 1998, with highlights from he bands history? Or including the whole IYVC medley or another song from shea? also more could of been included from MI in 97. And don't forget those filming brothers shot most of GFR's E Pluribus Funk Tour. We ant more we want more we want more. Also their's that 74 show out there booted in Japan, could of did Black Licorice and the Railroad from there, or from the extra, from where that show was taken. Again I say we wantr more,we want more,we want more.... ;D

The packaging is fine; The CD is the standard GFR 14 hits, of course they all sounds  great, capitol has done a very good job with the re mastering. We're An American Band-Number one hit; Time Machine; Walk Like A Man; Some Kind Of Wonderful; Shinin On; Heartbreaker; Rock N Roll Soul; the Loco Motion-number one hit; Footstompin' Music; Mean Mistreater: take Me; Bad Time; I'm Your Captain; Inside looking Out.

I wonder if the DVD will drive this to Gold in sales???

  • I have extremely mixed emotions about this CD/DVD. Because of the fact that we have been TOTALLY deprived over the years of ANY professional video of our band, I am salivating to get my copy. However, it's absolutely pitiful that the best they can do is 36 minutes. How about all of Shea? How about all of the Bosnia show? How about the entire concert shot for ABC In Concert? Now THAT would be cool. With what we got, I feel like a dog being thrown a bone to shut up.

I'm still waiting on my copy. I ordered through CD Universe, too, but I wasn't going to pay $15 for overnight. It shipped yesterday, so I'll probably get it by the weekend.

  • I received my copy in the mail today and just finished watching it. The most pleasant surprise? The PBS's The Show clip.
WOW!!! Mark, Don, and Mel in their youthful prime! Mel was freakin'
SMOKIN'!!!! Just watching him play that bass was like watching a lead guitarist play. The sound quality on that clip was awesome and Mel's bass was rattling the house!! My 19 year old son was watching with me and he kept saying "Look at that!! Look at that!! He is smokin'! LOOK at that!!" He also got a kick out of Mark's sideburns. This was also the first time I had seen a good close look at Mark playing that Messenger live. What a piece of junk to look at but OH MY LORD did that thing sound good. At least for the style of music GFR played.

One last thought. Over the last 10 years or so, a lot of us have met the guys, gotten to hang with them quite a bit, and being around them doesn't blow our minds like it used to. Watching them in their prime again tonight brought back some of the feeling and perspective that I had 35 years ago.
That PBS video was so good it felt like I was watching them live (as in real time). Now, let's have a freakin' FULL LENGTH DVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree, a full-length DVD would be great.  My son also plays bass (along with guitar), and he gets a huge kick out of the old Mel videos.  Mel is his favorite from GFR, hands down.  He met Mel a couple of years ago, and he still tells people about it.  It's something he will probably always remember, since he's into classic rock and GFR.

  • Why weren't these clips out on DVD before now? Seems like GFR STILL gets the short end of the stick where the sun don't shine! Oh, well, they are out now, and all I can say is, it is really awesome to watch them! I was mesmerized by the ILO clip...it really looks like it was RECENTLY taped on video! Awesome performance, the guys really cooked! Overall, extremely enjoyable, and my copy will be watched over and over until my DVD player collapses in surrender!  :P

Yea your right, we use to do write in campaigns, to capitol, to get GFR released on DVD and also of course, CD hear in the USA. W/ GFR everything is late, way late. I had all the Japan CDs, but it was very nice to get the USA releases, with extra tracks, re mastered etc., Now we finally got a DVD and its cool, BUT, I want more. The whole E Pluribus Funk tour was recorded for a movie-including the Shea show, We have got to get a whole concert out of that. There are lots of capitol promos that could be included on a DVD. The inconcert Phoenix show tape is there somewhere, that would be a wonderful show to have on DVD. And the 74 Calif show, could be redone, and made complete 4-5 songs were cut out of that. Finally the Bosnia show could be put on DVD. Hell, we could have a whole GFR anthology DVD set.

  • Good evening....

I wasn't one of the lucky few that got to see the Shea film at the Modern Drummer show but I did have David Tedds as a captive audience for about 2 hours (I drove him to the airport in Detroit after the Clio show in 2003) and he explained a lot of things about the Shea film and the soundtrack. David told me that the finished film is about an hour long and doesn't include all the songs performed that night. The set list that night was the same as "Live; The 1971 Tour" except that "Marks Says Alright" was played in the set before T.N.U.C. and "Gimme Shelter" was the encore. I think it was Al Musgrove who got the set list from David.

Don Brewer makes the point in the liner notes of the 1971 Tour CD that Shea was more about the event and not so much about GFR playing a great set. He goes on to say that  "But when I see the film, what's there is good. A lot of the stuff that was bad was taken out." The raw film was cut down into the hour long film that Terry Knight was shopping around before his falling out with the band. David cited "Paranoid" as a performance that night that was less than stellar. We all know the rest; David went through the tapes of the other shows recorded as back ups for Shea and assembled the 1971 CD.

I asked David why the audience is low in the mix on the Shea cuts given what I have read about the noise the crowd made that night. David  explained that Terry had numerous mikes recording the audience and in the original mix he had the audience mikes really high in the mix. The problem with that was the horrendous location echo was magnified and all sorts of delays and echoes could be heard. When he played the multitracks he was shocked at the sound mix. David was in touch with Terry as we all know during the entire remaster project and he asked Terry why he mixed it that way. Terry's reply was; *here, David imitates Terry's voice* "I wanted it to be a totally authentic experience..." back in the studo, David and his band of audio alchemists simply lowered the audience mikes in the new mix and the sound improved dramatically. he said that there was a bit of Pro Tools editing done on some of Don's snare but that was about the extent of the doctoring. If you watch the clip of "Closer To Home" you hear the original sound mix.

I imagine that if Shea is released, the hour long film will be what will we will get. As far as going back to the raw footage and releasing the whole concert, well.....that would be a huge job.

Paul Stanley once made the comment that "You listen with your eyes.." After listening to "Closer To Home" on the 1971 CD for the last 4 years, I get the whole picture now!!!

YOU know the way things looked like, we were lucky to get the Albums released as CDs, remastered and with bonus tracks. BUT BUT and I do mean BUT, come on you put a bonus DVD with a hits package and only 4 songs? 5 videos? its crazy. It should of been filled up. Promos, Live 1971 tour, Live 1974 tour, Bosnia Show etc., You can get box sets and videos (DVD) galore for almost any band bit not GFR one of the biggest bands ever? I am so sick of it!!!!!
