The quote in the Subject from Joan Baez seemed appropriate.  But, I think I like the following from Talking Heads better:

There's a party in my mind and I hope it never stops

For those of you who like to reminisce and remember the good ol' days (like me), here are two links into the GFR section of my Web-site to help you remember a little better.  For events that led up to the formation of the original "roadkill" e-mail mailing list:

And, for the (soon to be complete) Archives of the original "roadkill" e-mail mailing list:

Bill, we haven't kept in touch much from my days in Roadkill. When you started Roadkill it was really a blast. I met and made new friends and those I would never meet became my online family. I just wanted to take a minute and say thank you Bill for all that you have done for us GFR fans and for what you have done for the "Band". May God watch over you and Bless you each and every day.

Bill, I hope you plan on taking Jim Maijala's latest and final Phunk Phiction story he posted on the RK list and adding it to your web site (http://wap.parrette.net/GFR_WEB/JMAIJALA/) to maintain the history of the Phunk Phiction series. It would be incomplete without the final story  :D

MAYBE, I Should tell the story. When I got on the internet, almost the first thing I did was to start doing GFR serches. I can across very little at that time, someless less then one page of lonks, in fact I think it may of been like 3 links on one search. I have to say all the raodkillers did a great job getting sites up, posting allover the ionternet and doing a good job talking up GFR (Along w/ the reunion), to there point where you can hit thousaands of links now when you search GFR.

Anyway; Some how I got in contact with Funkola, who had some cool GFR stuff on Video (GFR 74, A Mark CCM concert and GFR promos and Vids such as the WAAB Documentary ISLO at Cinn POP. GFR on Playboy After Dark, GFR from Mondo Daytona,  etc.,) Anyway I traded with Funkola and when he sent me back the videos he Wrote Rick Funk Cappetto on the package and that nickname stuck for a long time. But do to David Tedds thanking RckDC in the first 4 GFR re masters I lost the Funk and everyone called me RickDC.

I think it was Funkola who told Mike Butler (a fellow roadkiller who live in Vegas as I did at that time) at GFR's Bosnia Show in Detroit Mike got in contact with me. I had NO PLAN on joining roadkill, such groups did not seen like anything I would be interested in, at all. But, Mike talked me into it. Instead of using my RickDC@aol.com name which has been my main e-mail since 1987, I made a second name, RCinSInCity on AOL (I have long since dumped that screen name, well I don't live in Vegas anymore). My First post, on roadkill, was June 1st 1997.

Well, needless to say the list was very fun during the reunion, I must of posted over 1000 times (probably could turn them into a demented book) filled with typos and misspellings. I made good friends on List, Bill (roomy), Mike Butler, Mickey M, RAY-ROD, Brother Kelly, LOU, the Gary's, the 3 TOM's the Al's, CT Chris, Nico, JOHN W, Donna and Allan, Jimmy C, Dick D, ROSS, RicK-K. and so many others. Who would of thought I would get to meet the band (on multiple occasions) and there family's, Who would of thought I would get my story in sunny's book Who would of thought I would meet 100's of other roadkillers who came to Vegas, over the years, from allover the world. Who would of though we would have all of GFR's albums out on CD? remember how long we had to wait (yes I know there were out in japan, I had all of those)  I mean remastered US copy's. We even Had Don's 50 TH Birthday party in Vegas, in which over 100 roadkillers came, Including Bill. What a Blast.

I prefer to remember those fun times instead of all the flame wars that started after the break up at the end of 98. I must admit and confess, I partook way to much in the flame wars, and I regret it (although I Have to admit it was somewhat fun). I should of defended without attacking. Well I hope I have learned from it. after a time I got sick of the arguing and left roadkill, back around 2000. I joined cyberfunk and got pissed at the moderator, way too tight control, and left that club in 2002. I was in some private groups too, and  leftthose for personal reasons. This is my first time back on a GFR club in over 4 years.

Back in the day I would of argued with you that I was the number 1 funk fan, you may have been equal with me, for number 1, but no one surpassed me for fanaticism.  LOL Well, I can't say that anymore, GFR, and all related groups will always be important to me, but I am much more balanced now, musically and in All ways.

I like this new format, I am not into mailing lists anymore, I prefer these, where we can come and go at will. Also I love that Bill kept track of all the roadkill logs, that has to be a sociologist's dream.

Well everyone take care and come on GFR how about an EP of the new songs, a DVD concert, somethig??????? throw us a bone.

Great post Rick. It reminds me a lot about cool stuf was going on in late 90s, even though I participated only virtually because wasn't yet in USA.

Bill thank you for what you have done over years for us and I understand it is not easy for you to continue but I hope you are doing well, you should be a tough guy.

Accidentally I was kicked out without any reason (or get unsuscribed by accident or because of computer bug) from Cyberfunk. But it does not matter - Cyberfunk with its so called host sucked a big time lately so I do not feel an urge to suscribe back.

Bill you have too many forums on this site. It will never take off untill you reduce it to reasonable number. I would suggest to have say three forums. E.g. one about band members. Inside this forum users can create threads if they want to discuss each member. Second forum may be for general discussions about GFR. Another one for offtopic discussion. So I think three forum are actually more than enough for today. It is always better to start with small and then grow as necessary if forums become unmanagable.

Current forum is too organized and is too hard to navigate - it is lifeless. It is just suggestion, but I participated in this kind of forums and from experience I know that Roadkill is not organized right.

Hi, Oktay, hope you are doing well.  I was sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Murzak.

I agree with you about Cyberfunk.  For an "official" list, it's really not helpful to fans at all.  I'm still subscribed, but I don't post anything.  I just read posts to keep up with old RKers, and I correspond with a few of them privately.

However, I must disagree that Roadkill is not organized correctly.  For quite some time I was a moderator on Quatloos!, an extremely successful (i.e., award-winning, with nods from such sources as Forbes magazine) anti-scam forum.  It is my considered opinion that a forum cannot be too organized.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with the way Bill has organized the new Roadkill.

Of course, I will admit that an anti-scam forum is far less personal to its users than a fan forum would be.

So I do understand what you are saying, since there are not a lot of members or posts here at present, which makes the forum look bare and uninviting.  I previously posted the Roadkill link to Cyberfunk, and that seemed to be the biggest complaint about it, especially since most GFR fans seem unfamiliar with forums.  I have found that those accustomed to mailing lists have a problem with forums simply because they do not understand why they are superior to lists.  However, once most start using forums, they no longer are interested in mailling lists.

So Bill, Oktay might have a point that it could be a good idea to reduce the number of forums for now, to encourage and increase membership and participation, then increase the level of organization again as participation increases.  However, I would not suggest that you change the categories, but rather perhaps do away with the many subcategories for now.

  • My wife says, "Stop living in the past!"  Well, Mr. Peabody, I'll just set the wayback machine to 1996....quick as a flash we were transported back to 1996 and what do we see?...about 250 people posting almost everynight some tidbit, item, gossip, sighting or information not previously known about a possible (but highly unlikely) reunion of Grand Funk Railroad.  "You gotta be kiddin' me!", I exclaimed with wonder and joy.  It is very interesting that the reemergence of GFR and the  emergence of roadkill and other fan sites happened within a few months of each other.

To say that roadkill (and others) contributed to the reunion tour, in a significant fashion, is not an understatement.  It is highly possible that WITHOUT the technology of the internet and roadkill, there may have been no way to determine if there was enough support by a 30 year old fan base of 40 and 50 somethings out there to even make the endevour economically viable.  To say, that Mark, Don, and Mel knew that we were out there, without roadkill, is a stretch.

The trial 1996 mini tour might have died after a few shows and the tremendous 1997 tour may never have happened.  No Bosnia CD, no remasters, nothing!  They might have gone into the dustbin of rock history like the Bay City Rollers!  Think of it, Bruce Kulick has a job today, because of us!  ;D

Well, this whole thing can be debated both ways.  But one thing is for sure, when the chance came, they answered the "clarion call of opportunity".

    Have a great day,

    Jim Maijala

  • Hi Tamara, thank you for your condolences on Mr.Murzik's death. He lived long, colorful and very comfortable life surrounded by music of Grand Funk Railroad. Other cats can only dream about it. So I believe he passed away as a happy cat.

My Russian GFR website (and Mr.Murzik’s official website along with it) went down in 2004, but I am working on the new revision - recently I realized that Russian fans need this site with detailed GFR history, Mark Farner's biography, Story of Flint and other stuff in Russian so they can feel at home and not alone in this GFR-unfriendly world. So very soon I will register new domain and restore Unofficial Russian GFR website.

Ricardo, friend, they kicked out me too. And Thomas too, and actually I did not see some other old fans at Cyberfunk either. May be they are unsubscribing anyone who speaks with accent :) Just kiddin’. Probably we talked too much off-topic. Topic itself became extremely boring – there is nothing new or interesting about Grand Funk anymore to discuss, but we are friends and can discuss whatever we like on Roadkill because Roadkill belongs to us – to people, not to some anonymous “host”.

Tamara, I agree with you that Forum is more convenient than mailing list, because mails keep coming and you cannot keep up deleting them and not interested in most of threads anyway.

But I think the main problem with current Roadkill is that topics are rather organized than naturally developed – that’s why it does not work. It is like Government versus private company. Government never works.

Another problem is – it is impossible to find out thread you are interested in. There are more topics than posts - what is wrong. If there are so few posts – why you need so many topics. Number of topics increases with number of posts – not vise versa. It is like Government taxing profits that do not exist.
